William "Bill" Maher, Jr. is an American comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, media critic, and television host. As a television host, he is well known for the HBO political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher (2003-present). Maher previously hosted a similar late-night show called Politically Incorrect, originally on Comedy Central and later on ABC.
Maher is known for his sarcastic attitude, political satire and sociopolitical commentary. He targets many topics including religion, politics, bureaucracies, political correctness, and the mass media.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

      @lilmoe4364@lilmoe4364 Жыл бұрын
    • @@lilmoe4364 is that supposed to be an insult? Frankly, what the progressives call progress is extremely regressive with their decision to view race in EVERYTHING just when we were finally broadly accepting people for the content of their character. Or how about progressives going out of their way to patronize the minuscule percentage of the population that are trans, at the expense of the 50% female population. Suddenly they can’t say only a woman can give birth. But yes, bill maher is “the man who would not evolve”…. More power to him! Ps, that nonsense is how we’re gonna have a second Trump term because instead of tacking towards sanity, you all doubled down on crazy and turned centrists like myself into Republican voters for the foreseeable future.

But I do agree with some of the comments below, that he's so used to performing in front of an audience and getting laughter and applause that it was hard for him to accept that most of these people in this audience were just here to listen.

    @gspendlove@gspendlove9 жыл бұрын
    • gspendlove Well he was on a comedy tour in Europe, so he had probably just done a bunch of shows and the audience here were probably a bunch of college students who are used to lectures and talks where they are supposed to stay quiet until the Q&A part. So it was probably awkward at first on both sides, but it was a good Q&A all in all.

    • @@cooldudecs Strictly direct democracy is extremely rare e.g. the Netherlands. Since they have a robust multi-party system there, it doesn't descend into mob-rule and tyranny over minorities. But it does lead to a problem where a minority party (say 10% of the vote) ends up in government perpetually, in coalition with either left or right-leaning parties. Google 'Purple Coalition'; basically the 2 main parties got so fed up with this they formed a giant coalition. Also, these systems typically hand candidate choice/preference entirely to the party elites. No system is perfect. The US system does seem uniquely open to abuse and chicanery (on both sides) mind.

They see someone with a different point of view, and instead of hearing what they have to say, considering it, and at the very least disagreeing, they see them as evil, morally devoid people, and won't even listen to them. They get angry and change the channel and demonize them to the point that even listening to what they have to say is immoral because they're lending an ear to an evil person. So then they're stuck in an echo chamber of Fox News and Facebook politics pages and only hear little sound bites made to stir up more anger and more vitriol. It's a never ending cycle. • If you stop and think about it, ''Your Highness'' has lost all off its historical power, we dont view Royal's as inherently special in any way, so I wouldnt have a problem calling her ''Your Highness/Majesty'', just like I wouldnt have a problem with calling a Judge ''Your Honor'' its the traditional title for someone in that station, and you could look at the queen as a sort of mascot, her job is playing the part of what we think a Queen should be without having any actual power, and without that power, the title of Your Highness means nothing.

He's been dumbing down the discourse for decades. His show is cut up in adhd fashion to minimize the amount of time any speaker has to deliver a thought, lest it be dangerous or make him look like the fool he is, and so you have panels of soundbites while he talks over them. • What a bunch of intellectual garbage. I am tired of religious bigots masquerading as sophisticated thinkers. Bill Maher is not a sophisticated thinker. I’ve never heard him make a good argument against the concept of God or justify his atheist position other than to spew insults and make sweeping unlearned generalizations. This isn’t a personal attack. I don’t know Bill except from television, the internet, and his public life. A serious atheist like Bertrand Russell, who I like, had arguments for atheism and against Christianity. Bill Maher has no arguments. Bill is also being dishonest when he criticizes people for their “attacks” on him and then he goes on to attack conservatives or people of faith etc. I think he knows that this stuff sells and that is a big reason why he does it. My main criticism of Bill is that he is anti-intellectual. He hides behind a thin veil of popularized intellectualism that would not stand up to any serious academic scrutiny. He runs fast and loose with definitions and words and is a product of fashionable progressive philosophies that are popular amongst actors, celebrities, and politicians. I like to go after this guy because I am hoping that giving him and his sort a bit of his own medicine might be good for honest dialogue. But I’ve come to learn that reason and rationality only works with reasonable and rational people and Bill Maher is neither of those things.

As for non-EU nations, we have no control over their policies, so it's fruitless to become irritated by their unwillingness to share the check. Personally, I would simply ensure that in return, those nations are not recipients of OUR goodwill when they need it. Of course all cultures are not created equal, nor do all nations have the same attitudes towards human rights. Does that mean that we should follow their template? Clearly not. We rightly pride ourselves on being better than say Turkey, or Russia, or Bosnia, or perhaps even Japan, and in my opinion, we should continue to be the beacon for decency on the planet.

But I don't think you are. This whole thing about "parents raising children" pisses me off. Because every parent wants to pass on their own brand of bullshit on to their kids, so the kids turn out to be full of shit too as grown ups. If the reason you and I are liberal, is because our parents allowed us to be, or raised us to be, then we're no better. We're just luckier. Which is not impressive. We all have a thing or two to learn about critical thinking. I think the number 1 priority for child raising should be safety, and giving them all the chances they need to learn all they can, from as many differing perspectives and environments as possible, with a huge emphasis on logic and fairness to other people. Kids already come with extreme curiosity and energy to learn. "Teachers" should be called "learning facilitators". because it's really kids doing the work. Teachers just point the way. Not all too well either, sadly.
