Marco Pierre White is a British chef, celebrity, restaurateur and television personality. He is noted for his contributions to contemporary British cuisine. White has been dubbed the first celebrity chef, and the enfant terrible of the UK restaurant scene. He was called the godfather of modern cooking by Australian MasterChef (Season 4, Episode 53). White was, at the time, the youngest chef ever to have been awarded three Michelin stars. He has trained chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Curtis Stone and Shannon Bennett.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

I’ve met many, and their stories and mindsets stand out from the rest of the usual ivy leaguers from upper-middle class or upper-class families.

    • I think that’s a big part of todays issues in the West. We have “educated” people telling young people they have all these problems and unfortunately for most, they believe it. You have boys with a tonne of energy drugged because they have “ADHD” when in reality that’s the natural state of kids and sitting in a classroom is unnatural. Yet they’ll hormonally change you to fit you roughly into their puzzle piece. Quite fascinating.

Marco used his fear of failure in order to better himself and push past his mental and physical limits, whereas I let my fear of failure stop me from even trying to do anything. Other journalists have expressed frustration with how tiresome he is to interview because he just wants to stick to this well-worn working class bootstrap stuff. I’m surprised the adulation in the comment section here, but it shows the value of media-savviness i suppose.

    • I love Marco, but if someone retells the same story, exactly the same down to the very last details multiple times consistently, it means it is a well rehearsed story. If someone is speaking a true story from the heart there will be small details that are different every time, because that's simply how the human mind works. Unless of course you have written the story out and very well rehearsed and memorised it.

An excerpt: “Two decades on, has anything changed? No. He’s less inclined to hammy tantrums than of old, and he sounds posher, too. But in other ways, he has calcified. The cadences of his speech are more biblical-sounding than ever, his logic more elusive. He remains obsessed with his Italian-born mother, who died of a brain haemorrhage when he was six, and he is still prone to talking about his working-class roots, for all that it’s almost 40 years since he left his father’s house in Leeds”

  • "he taught me, never throw in the towel... And if I did, he taught me to pick it up." That resonates with me. Even when defeated and finally put down, you still get back up and keep fighting. My Dad was the definition of integrity and honor. He talked the talk but backed it up. Lots of nice people would give you the shirt off their backs.... He LITERALLY and figuratively did so numerous times with me witnessing it happen. And we did not have money growing up. My Dad gave me tools. Tools for life and tools for living. He was very very old school, too, like Marco's dad, but towards the latter 20 years of his life he became warm and no longer rough, extremely easy going and never yelled, NEVER. I have no idea how he learned to never raise his voice or fight with my Mom in his last 20 years of life, it was crazy to watch... But it showed me that two people could totally get along without constant headbutting until their demises lol

  • I was rubbish school, couldn’t wait to get out, the school leaving age had just gone up to 16, but I’d already got a job as a cadet nurse at a huge mental hospital to start the day after my 16th birthday. Never graced that dump of a school with my presence again, and I never looked back, I loved it, scary, not at all, extremely sad at times, very, but the biggest joy is giving people ease or comfort or whatever nursing is. I learned I very important lesson really quickly, never eat a sweet that a psychiatric patient gives you, it might not be chocolate, and a sense of humour.
