Aggressive (defensive) ball pythons, a few tips and tricks!

Here we share how we change the behavior of ball pythons that want to strike, and how we pick them up. The behavior seems aggressive, but really is all defensive. We simply change what defensive behavior they do by covering the head.

xSehzhy lol
MoldyPizzaRoll he protec he attac but most importantly he snek
MoldyPizzaRoll I have a ball pohne I had 4 of them I just got one today
Snek Thats a female.
That tail waggle was so damn cute I'm sorry XD Thanks for this though
Mine always does it when he's eating, always hear a thumping against the wall xD. That or he tries to bite your hand off.
I should've waited until the end of this video before using the head-cover trick on my pet mamba
Hilarious!!!😄😜😀
omfg😄😄😄😄
Lol...pet mamba!,,😂
Lmfao!
lmaooooo
My BP isn't aggressive, but he will protect me😂😂😂😂 my brother is a jerk to me, and he was yelling at me while I was holding my BP, AND HE BIT HIM😂😂😂😂. I guess he just loves me!!!!!
He protec but he also attac
Dina Dabby probably because your brother was acting like a threat to the snake . Please understand that they may bond to you etc but they are unable to feel love like dogs and cats. Not trying to be rude but it's to help you understand .
yeah bps cant love their owners because they aint cats or dogs
snakes don't have a frontal lobe which controls emotions, like love or anger. They're incapable of loving you. Your bond is built purely on familiarity and routine.
It loves you in its own way. Snakes do have feelings and every snake is different from another. It loves you in its own way
LMFAO, 'She's honestly kind of a bitch'.
My oldest ball is an absolute ass. He doesn't strike or anything, but he hisses at me every time I pick him up and he's even musked on me before. I hate it because he's such a beautiful snake.
That hiss. I'd only owned a corn snake before I rescued a bp that wasn't in great condition. Now it's recovered it's a lot more aggressive and hisses whilst blowing itself up any time I touch it.
Bob Clover mine is a bit hissy until you pick her up. She calms down a lot after that.
Mannnn I got my Mojave a week and a half ago and I’m a young teen (14). This is my first time having a snake and I’ve got a family friend who helps me if I come to face problems with her. She’s never attacked and all she ever does is move around the vivarium and when I take her out she’ll just try to get up to my neck where she likes to hang
Mine is pretty mean as well. For whatever reason he hates the sound of my voice. I can hold him and as long as I dont say anything he will just hang in my hand. If I say anything though he will turn and look at me. If I say something again after hes turned to me he strikes.
I’m so shocked!! My lemon blast is such a sweet heart! Same with my milk snake, aside from when she musks me when i accidentally scare her.
You have a delightful personality sir
I was thinking the same thing.
A little tip I've learned with my new baby bp (who is horribly defensive) is to mist them. Very lightly, don't spray them right in the face but gently mist them. They will coil up and allow you to do whatever you need to do, whether it's picking them up or doing something in their enclosure. It won't hurt them, it just bothers them. Some snakes really don't mind but I've found with most ball pythons they really do not like water.
omg i do the same thing it snaps them out if the food response perfectly and allows me to get in there safely
Keep in mind that also re enforces negative interactions with you, you could look into using a snake hook to pick them up and move them, if you're worried about getting bitten
My snake was awsome for 4 years and when he turned 5 he started going after my hand
Same thing happening to me right now!
@@abelincoln9560 same lol
Literally same like she thinks she is tuff all of a sudden
1st make to be 4 years old and then get aggressive in its 5th year it almost Always happens with tromma in that snake sees you in the tram as one thing you did something wrong I'm sorry but they have good memory
Oh God I got a baby rn cant wait to see how she is when she gets to be that age lmao
"Look, a distraction!"
"she's justttt.. kind of a bitch"😂
My first Olympus video and after about 10sec pressed subscribe. What got me was your happy attitude. You mentioned some good familiar names. You have something different, keep at it. People need to know EVERYTHING... even if they just want a pet. Big responsibility owning any pet. Good luck and many many blessings
Patricia Alonso same here! One month later :)
Patricia Alonso I
Awesome vid! I must say that I’ve never seen an aggressive Ball Python before until seeing that. The shaking of the tail was crazy.
I love your channel! Honestly I feel as though I have learned more from your channel than any other reptile channel!
My BP hisses at me when I pick him up, he's never struck at me, or even gone into strike mode, but it still makes me nervous as hell sometimes. He is my first snake. Great feeder, never refused a meal. I wanna handle him more but I don't want to stress him out either
I'm in the exact same situation except my BP will strike but he won't use his teeth??? It doesn't hurt but its scary
i have my first snake as well, i think you just need to handle it and it will get used to you
Robyn La'laurie Ball pythons are just defense snakes he probably thinks you want to eat him, it’s important to hold him every day so he just gets over it, you are his owner and he needs to know it. Over come your fear my friend!
@@marshallwilburn6939 and that’s why I am here watching this video now so I can see the signs to be aware of my boyfriend surprised me with a fire ball python for a early birthday present and I want to learn everything I can I used to be highly terrified of snakes now I honestly adore them
Hey guys in my experiences every Ball Python that's been defensive that I thought would never calm down so far I've had a 100% success putting them in a non transparent tub and a little time like 2-4 months they usually do a lot better as they feel more secure. But you guys have awesome videos keep up the great work!!
I will try that. Actually hurts me to see that she ist so afraid all the Time
See my normal was a sweet heart in a tanm set up, I couldn't keep the humidity up so i swapped her to a rack set up. And she became a huge asshat. Any ideas?
I just got my first ever ball python and your video was an amazing help. I love a lot of your videos they are super informative and helpful!
That pied you showed last is BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Ok but can we just acknowledge that when you picked her up she was shaped like an adorable little heart? OMG SO CUTE 💕😭💕💕💕
As someone who has a (baby) carpet python I can definitely agree that they don't like fast moves near their heads, lol. Great video!
Mike Corbett for young carpets, good way to get bit
Olympus Reptiles I couldn't agree more and of course I've never been foolish enough to try that method, lol
I've covered baby carpets without regretting it... but hungry kingsnakes just think you are feeding them your fingers, lol.
Bryan Duggan I'd trust my kingsnake over my carpet python especially if both are hungry. But for reference, my kind snake is super chill, lol
My splendida x nigrita would eat the leg off the table if it got too close. He can be handled but anything above the upper 3rd of the body is going in his mouth. Every collection needs (and I hate this term) a "garbage disposal", and this guy never disappoints :) Great videos!
I judged this video by the into but I kept watching and you got a new sub! This dude is down to earth.
This is the best quick knowledge crash course ive seen for any subject in years
I’m looking into how to care for a ball python. I’ve always wanted one as a kid. Had one for about a month but gave it away because I was afraid of it getting big and being aggressive to my son lol you legit changed my perspective on them. It’s all instinct in their actions, and you show it so clearly. I appreciate this video like you wouldn’t believe bro. You the man and stay safe out there bro ✊🏽
Congrats on your 100th vid! I love your guys videos, very informative, gorgeous collection and it's nice to watch w/steady camera work. Keep up the good work!
urascumbag01 thanks! I will make sure Curt knows his camera work is appreciated as well.
This was super helpful! Thank you!
Lol I love your videos, and your personality is just the icing on the cake! Thank you for your helpful tips.
Dude cool as hell with a lot of knowledge
incredible looking snakes!
Your 100th video was the first I've seen of yours and it was great :) You are very enjoyable to watch. Thank you for the video :)
I've watched most of you're content. Keep up the good work guys.
Me seeing King Cobra: covers its head King Cobra: covers my hand inside its mouth
All my snakes are very people friendly, but good to know since one of mine are a rescue! He's a little shy . Thanks
Love the vids mate 🙌
Thank you so much for sharing🤗
I Have a Orange lori dream male and is very defensive thanks for the tips and congrats
Congrats on your 100th video!! I also have a defensive female spider ball python I call "The Bitch"
budyjames77 we all end up with 1.
budyjames77 thats why i want a male ball python
LOL! WHAT THE BITCH😂
Spider morphes I've heard tend to have behavior issues
budyjames77 ha ha ha!!🤣
Very interesting never thought the ball pythons would react so calmly when you covered it anyway thanks for uploading and will keep watching your videos. take care
love the videos learnt alot from them , cheers
I really needed this advice, I'm planning on getting a ball python in a year or so. I'm not sure what nature she will have, especially since I plan getting one who was previously owned. My cousin has one who is very defensive, he actually bit me for no real reason. So thank you for the tips!
Get one yet
Sit the ball python so its chin is on your hand, the friction usually deters striking. Another BP breeder friend of mine said something about uncoiling tails to calm them down. As always great video!!
One of the best reptile channel ever🐍
THANK YOU SO MUCH I REALLY NEEDED THIS
I've seen a lot of videos on people's pet snakes being extremely defensive and sorta aggressive towards their owners or just anyone in general, and these people have had these snakes as their pets since they had hatched or since birth as newborn baby snakes. And I just dont understand how snakes who have been with one owner their entire lives can be so angry and strike at everyone all the time. How does a snake just be born angry and stay angry and aggressive their whole lives when they've never been in the wild or have only been with one owner their whole life? It just doesnt seem to make much sense to me how that happens. Like, when you get a puppy and hold it and give it attention its whole life, they dont just grow up to be angry and violent dogs. I dont see how that same thing csnt work with snakes lol
Snakes vs puppies, totally different. But handling can cause them to settle down.
It's because snakes don't necessarily recognise that you aren't a threat unlike a puppy who learns who you are and realises you won't hurt it
My friend used to have an overly defensive ball python. He calmed down after a few socializations where I held him in a hoodie. He would bite the hoodie instead of me and get really jerky when I touched him. He got better when grabbed from underneath instead of overhead. He was just anxious. Once he realized we wouldnt hurt him when we picked him up, he started to chill out and got a whole less headshy
Good featz man! Subbed! Cool that you are sharing your journey from the very beginning including both ups and downs. Keep it up.
VauxMoto ty!
thank you guys! for all the great info..:)
Whenever I open my gal's tank she goes into strike mode, but as soon as I reach in and pick her up, she's completely fine. I think she's just always hungry lol
Lol maybe
How is she doing today?
Mine too he comes out so quickly and goes in s shape, following my hand. Did you figure out how to stop it 😂 I think it’s because I always feed him
@@genevam450 The solution for me was to reach in and grab her with 0 hesitation. Though, sadly she passed recently.
Snakes are my 1st favorite animal 🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍
you guys were one of the first reptile channels I started following back at like video 5 and you are one of the few I care/ get excited to watch. congratulations guys.
johncharlse1 thanks for staying with us man!! we really do appreciate it.
Olympus Reptiles as long as you guys provide a positive outlook on our hobby and don't become so wrapped up in views and click bait I will always be a supporter
I've got 2 ball pythons and a carpet python and I really enjoy your videos. Very informative and helpful. Thanks😁
10/10 would not recommend doing on a ball python with a very strong feeding response. Bless her heart my 4 foot pastel ball decided that my hand was a rat when I did this, nailed me on my middle and ring finger, and didn't let go for 20 minutes (coiled and everything). She's usually not aggressive at all so I don't blame her, but it was just bad timing and she was apparently in a mood as it was the beginning of breeding season and she was extra hungry.
Laurel London did you come from the back or front? Coming at the face, not a good idea.
I was bit by a ball python in class and it didn't want to let go, so my teacher had to put hand sanitizer in the snakes mouth to make the snake release.
It was at 2:15 when I decided to give this vid a thumbs up lol
Best educational video on KZhead 👍🏻👍🏻
100 videos that's freaking awesome you guys and Brian are about the only shows I watch go Olympus Reptiles you guys are awesome.
Thanks! I think we are over 300 now
My ball python is an absolute sweetie! I didn't know you were suppose to pick them up from the back but she seems fine and I pick her up by her biggest part anyway
It's better to grab them from the middle to support their whole body ^^
snakes smell fear i'm impressed with the way you handled her. I really want to get a snake either a corn snake or a ball pyhton. And this info will help when I go looking for one. Thank you
Cierra LeBlanc What did you end up getting?
always nice to see some videos for a me ,I'm a new pyhton owner and trying to learn the ends and out and liitlw tricks... def appreciate you brother
this was super helpful! I have a blind ball python that is obviously very defensive and I struggle to handle her at all! it took me hours of waiting for her to calm down to attempt to move her to her new enclosure last night
Hello! I have a question about strange ball python behavior (well, my ball python's behavior). I've had this boy for a while now, maybe 4 months, and he's never done anything like this before. He's been refusing food, burrowing under his substrate, moving all his hides back and sitting behind them, even getting up on his basking spot. He's usually not very active and prefers to sit in his rock but he's never been very active in previous months. One of my friends told me he might be having a mating season fit or something of the sort but I'm not too sure. It started around the middle of March, maybe it's been going on this whole month but it's been about a month since he last ate. Any advice or knowledge? Any and all help is veeeeery appreciated ^-^
It could be just growth, hormonal, seasonal type thing. It could also be that he is due for a good environment cleaning. I would dump/change substrate then go from there.
This guy is funny subscribe
Very helpful video! Thanks 🙏
congratulations on #100! keep up the great work. love watching you guys
natashiaearly ty!!
I hear rattling in the background... can you demonstrate this technique on one of those please???
Boris Vinokurov think that is covered in the video
So do u sell snake I'm very curious cuz I'm planning on getting a ball python but I know it not best to get them from a pet store so I was just wondering
Daddies Play toy we do! Stock is pretty much out but will hatch more in 18

Happy 100th guys and thanks for all the great videos and all the hard work
Marshal Platz thanks man!!
I noticed you pulled out females to demonstrate, are females usually more defensive? I'm looking to get my first 1-2 BP's and i'm just curious if females tend to be more like that than males? Thanks!
Carmen Patata Anaranjada nah, it's hit and miss
Olympus Reptiles OK, cool. thanks for responding!
Carmen Patata Anaranjada no I have a baby bp and she's a female. She's very docile but very headshy
My female ball is amazing I can take her anywhere & let anyone hold her shes very comfortable around ppl I love her soo much.

I've been thinking about getting a baby ball python, how do I determine their temperament before choosing one because I assume that any snake being handled by a stranger will not be as relaxed as with someone they know. My family are not snake people and I know if they see me get bitten by a snake they'll panic. I just want a ball python because they seem so relaxed and they're beautiful. So lovable too.
Kristen H Hi, if you get one from a decent shop they will normally be relatively honest about the snakes temperament before you buy and you can always ask to handle the snake in the shop, this will generally give you a good idea of its temperament , Hope this helps as they are great pets 😊
Kristen H usually it just takes easy handling to calm them down.
Kristen H I am new to being a ball python owner, let me tell you, I absolutely LOVE my snake. They are real easy to take care of.
Kristen H I have heard about baby ball pythons to not be the best for beginners, since its hard to feed them. Maybe get one thats a little bit older, but not full grown?
WhileyouwerereadingmynameIstoleyoursandwich I don't think a baby is a bad choice at all, as long as the breeder gets them started well first. juvenile it adult is an excellent choice as well, but many people want to watch the animal for it's whole life.
Im getting a male ball python this Saturday, all i have ever had before was corns. I was told he had only ever done a quick hiss, never bit, and was handled by a 7 year old, but this video helped calm me just incase he does get a bit moody. Definitely subscribing, loved the content!
My BP tries to bite me through the cage every time i walk by, and i dont know what to do about it, and once i pick him up, hes perfectly fine
He may feel exposed
What does it mean when my BP squeezes my hand when I'm holding him
Ben Langhans he might just be trying to get warm or he’s just moving.
He might be anchoring on your hand so it doesnt fall, hence the tighter grip
nothing bad haha don’t worry he’s not trying to kill you, it could be balance or movement
Thanks for sharing this ball phyton defensive mode
Cool video man! Good luck on your journey and channel as well! As someone being passionate about reptiles I'll respect all methods of raising as long as the reptiles are happy and healthy! :) Keep up the good work!👍
so is it bad to feed your snake in the same tank it lives in?.....because won't it get thinking that when the tank opens that its food time and strike?
Justin Smith nope, that is an old wives tale. Feeding in the home won't cause aggression, and causes less stress.
how can i reticulate my python so it turns into a reticulated python
by a reticulated python.
Have you tried to ridicule it for its actions? Id assume afterwards you could consider it a rediculed python.. so.. close?
I really appreciate this video I just got a very "aggressive" piebald and honestly I've never have a mean ball python lol I needed these tips
love it bro. keep up the great work
Jason Myers thanks!
Can you live feed a tortoise please
Louis TheEleventh nope, don't keep any at home
Olympus Reptiles it was a joke, meaning like I wanted you to feed a EXTRA VENOMOUS TORTOISE A MOUSE or something
Louis TheEleventh lol, I thought you wanted me to set and feed a sulcata vegetables or something.
Olympus Reptiles that is also a great idea, if you're up for it. (I Am Challenging You)
Olympus Reptiles no rush. Get around to it whenever your agenda sees fit.
Is there a reason why my ball python never tried to bite me or strike At me in anyway?... I could basically do whatever I wanted to her even put her in my pocket without her getting defensive or scared. Is this normal? I believe she is a super pastel clown?
Nick L most are like that
My Python has only struck me accidently when feeding when he missed his rat, and honestly he is sweet. He sits on my lap and watches tv with me most days lol
Awesome, thank you.
Thank you for answering 😀🐍
This guy is awesome! Great video man. I would love to see a video where you get bit just to show how "not bad" it really is.
Arlow Farrell already got them lol
Just found u, awesome vid and I love the information, I have just got my first snake. :)
Thanks for the video! This is the first time I've come across your channel. You seem like such a bro :D

Wow your pretty good ! I like the fact that you found a trick !
congratulations on 100 videos you are one of my role models in snake breeding and so is Colin I used to watch him when he made videos
Martin Reyes thanks so much! Colin will make some, and we will appear in each other's as well from time to time. I really appreciate the compliment, I still think of myself as a new guy learning.
