some Livyatan info from wiki
Livyatan is an extinct genus of macroraptorial sperm whale containing one species: L. melvillei. The genus name was inspired by the biblical sea monster Leviathan, and the species name by Herman Melville, the author of the famous novel Moby-Dick about a white bull sperm whale.
Livyatan was likely an apex predator, preying on whales, seals, sharks and so forth. Characteristic of raptorial sperm whales, Livyatan had functional, enamel-coated teeth on the upper and lower jaws, as well as several adaptations for hunting large prey.
Livyatan's total length has been estimated to be about 13.5-17.5 m (44-57 ft), similar to the modern sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), making it one of the largest predators to have ever existed. The teeth of Livyatan measured 36.2 cm (1.2 ft), and are the largest biting teeth of any known animal.

#Livyatan #Megalodon #leviathan
Fun fact- giant whale-eating predators like Livyatan and megalodon were likely killed off by ice-age-related climate change... but not directly. At the time they lived, many different filter-feeding whales existed, both large and small. These smaller baleen whales were probably their favoured prey, and formed the bulk of their diet. All whales need very high concentrations of fatty food such as krill or fish to survive, but small baleen whales had a different tactic to modern ones. The small whales didn't need as much food as big whales, but their small size means they had lower cruise speeds and higher drag, and so they probably fed in fairly local conditions without migrating far. When the ice ages hit, baleen whale food became much more seasonal and localised. This meant that, while they needed more food overall, the massive size of large baleen whales let them survive longer between feasts and travel far more efficiently than the small ones could. So the big whales could migrate across the planet to feed and breed (and indeed, started getting bigger to do so even better- it's why the blue whale is bigger than any extinct whale), while the smaller whales were trapped in places with food supplies that were too irregular to rely upon, and so died out. Without the small whales to eat, megalodon and Livyatan were left with a choice between small, fast whales and seals, and giant, formidable baleen whales. The former were too hard to catch for too little gain, while the latter had the sheer power to guard their vulnerable calves and protect themselves as adults- leaving the whale-hunters to starve. Later, modern mammal-hunting groups of killer whales developed a new, more modern strategy for hunting marine mammals via culture rather than evolution- they chase whales into exhaustion before attacking, letting them circumvent their size and power, and they can switch between ambush and pursuit to ensure they can reliably catch the safer small marine mammals as well.

@@BARelement they are not in the same family
I like the realism this guy put into the Livyatan's eating habits. Fossil evidence suggests that, while they did eat sharks, they did not eat the whole thing, and for a couple good reasons: 1. It's too big 2. They need to consume chunky flesh and meat Megalodon certainly was a significant meat supplier for these marine mammals, but it wasn't the outside that was appetizing; it was the inside. At the end of the animation, you can see the dying/dead megalodon slowly floating down to the seafloor, and you'll notice it has a good-sized hole from the carnivorous attack; that hole is right around where the shark's vital organs are, particularly the liver. The internal organs of sharks provide lots of protein, fat, and other subsidiaries for their prey to benefit from, and this is why sharks are a prominent target of carnivorous marine mammals. Many modern-day marine mammals like Killer Whales tend to eat sharks themselves and do the same thing; bite a hole out of them and then eat what's inside. This way for whales to dine has been a practice since the days of Basilosaurus, and this method has been carried on through multiple different species, including Livyatan.

True
Back in the old days, there was constant stories about sea monsters and creatures that would attack ships and sink them with little to no survivors. When you think about it, the world used to have giant animals and giant creatures bigger that anything we have today (like the dinosaurs used to exist but are now extinct) and if Livyatan and Megalodon and other bigger animals were still were around the time humans were sailing ships, its possible they're may be some truth to the stories that frightened sailors talked about, maybe and who knows.

Isnt it a sperm whale....
@@DireNemesis genetics wise they are closer to orca, appearance wise they are more like sperm whales

@@irondragon1785 livyatan's behavior was likely more that of an orca, (I'm assuming you're using orca as an analogy when it comes to all of this) but it is genetically closer to sperm whales than to other toothed whales such as dolphins, porpoises, and orcas, by the logic you've presented, zygophyseter would be a very close relative to dolphins, which is false but I can see the resemblance. While Zygophyseter and dolphins do look similar, and are still relatives because they are both toothed whales, one is a physeteroid and one is a delphinid. Tl;DR: just because two creatures are similar in a a couple ways does not mean they are closely related even if they share a relatively broad clade. I don't believe a lone Livyatan could kill a full grown Megalodon as they both were likely equal in size. If Livytans lived and hunted in pods then they would stand a better chance of taking down an adult Megalodon.
@@thenickhelms84 u know leviathan has the biggest teeth and maybe the biggest biteforce of all animals existing so i am very sure that one of them could kill a meg
@@dragonnashor9320 There's no question about the formidability of Livyatan as an apex predator but most lone predators tend to hunt smaller prey and Megalodon still had a stronger biteforce of any animal known perhaps even surpassing Livyatan. The Livyatan's teeth were no doubt larger than Megalodon's growing as large as a foot long but this whale's teeth were like spikes designed to grasp and hold on prey where as Megalodon's teeth were like steak knives with serrations designed to slice through flesh and even bone.
@@sasquatch668able Yes, they do rarely but almost always it's a small crocodile or caiman.
@@heiseigojifan2713 that's the male megalodon estimate and the females could grow 60ft or more. livyatan was also estimated to be 15m, so it wouldn't just go after a 15m megalodon thinking it's just a meal and not a threat. Also cartilage is extremely flexible allowing more maneuverability. skeleton strength tends to not matter in these case when things tend to bleed out first. megalodon wasn't a dumb creature either seeing that it targeted the fins of whales. it would leave anything completely immobile and defenseless. what's even more to considered livyatan was estimated to die out a couple million years before megalodon.

Jajajaja

Francis Semyon bro if your gonna spam at least say something that relates to what the person above is saying
@@grange4853 I respond to the misleaded comments, the relation is more than obvious.
Francis Semyon but the person is just saying a joke?
Words can barely describe how I feel about this, so amazing. The animations, the detail, everything is so perfect! And that nice little touch of showing Megalodon as not bveing the invincible killing machine that it is often portrayed as is a nice one.

Wow, I wonder why nobody's talking about those dope graphics? That's excellent man!
