Peak Design MICRO CLUTCH Initial Thoughts - Is it better than the cuff?

🔴 CHECK OUT THE MICRO CLUTCH: goingawesomeplaces.com/peak-d....
This is a first look at the Peak Design Micro Clutch I-Plate with a combination of its initial set up with a mirrorless camera (OM System OM-1) and all of the ups and downs that come with that. From that, I dive into my initial thoughts on the product, how it feels in the hand, and ultimately whether I can see this as a replacement to the Peak Design Cuff that I've been using for years.
With this video, I mainly wanted to find out the answers to a few things:
1) Could it be an improvement and replacement over the Peak Design Cuff
2) Does the Micro Clutch I-Plate work with a camera with a grip
Spoiler warning - I'm not sure if the micro clutch is for me and for the camera that I use. While I get that the Cuff can serve a very different purpose, I wouldn't say that I would take the Micro Clutch over the Cuff. Then again, the OM-1 needs the L-Plate for sure.

  • I know I wasn't able to cover EVERYTHING and honestly Peak Design does a great job with showcasing the product that I really wanted to to share my opinion from my very narrow view of photography and the camera that I use but hopefully it was insightful for those that were curious about the small details. Give it a thumbs up if you found it helpful and subscribe at goaw.pl/AwesomeTube!

  • I agree entirely... I've used a PD *Clutch* with larger cams (Sony A7III etc.) and I liked the feel of "palming" the camera and felt it was very secure. I thought perhaps the *Micro-Clutch* would be a nice alternative to the PD *Cuff* I use with my X100V... so I supported the Kickstarter. The installation is unsupisingly a bit of a pain but I found that using 2 fingers in the clutch I felt very unprotected (the camera could clearly slip out of my hand, only giving a minimally more secure of a feeling) unless I cranked down the strap on the fingers and even then I didn't feel 100% and the comfort dropped dramatically and my hand felt cramped. Three fingers (pinky) felt terrible. I had a choice: comfortable = almost an unsupported feeling and the camera is in danger and uncomfortable = a bit of support but you wouldn't want to use the camera like that for too long. This one for me is a miss... I'm back to using my cuff after a couple of days shooting with the micro clutch. Cuff basically makes me feel like the camera is totally unrestricted but if I drop it I'm protected. My hand can get a bit cramped from gripping the camera but I can deal with that because in the micro clutch I found myself needing to do that anyway, unlike the clutch with bigger cams where I could more safely release my grip occasionally and let the clutch hold my camera if that makes sense.

  • I have a smaller full frame camera with the strap attachment point on the side of the camera vs the top. I was able to try out the micro clutch in store (both versions) and liked it more than I thought I would. For your camera, the attachment point is so far on top of the camera you should try using that second ring to move it farther out, which will in turn bring the padded section farther out and give you proper coverage over the 2 middle fingers. This design is meant to be comfortable but tighter than a full hand clutch strap, and when it works for your camera it's an interesting supportive shooting tool. In the end if you try that and it doesn't fit though, either keep it to use on a smaller camera or send it back.

  • Hello! I'm definitely very interested in this micro clutch and wanted to ask -- since when I shoot I use a tethertools tetherblock, would it be possible to attach that on to the plate?

    @bb_drip@bb_drip7 ай бұрын
    • That’s the unfortunate part of this that I forgot to mention. There’s no screws at the bottom of the plate that goes on so you can’t attach anything else to it.

  • The Peak Design Micro Clutch is undeniably a high-quality product, delivering excellent performance. However, upon installation, it becomes evident that there is a slight limitation when used in conjunction with the flip screen of the Fujifilm XPro3. The clutch base unfortunately interferes with the full opening of the flip screen, requiring users to exercise caution to avoid inadvertently applying excessive force and potentially compromising the integrity of the screen's pivot point.

  • I tried this on Leica Q3 and as u mentioned I don’t feel it’s secure like the full clutch plus my smallest finger is hanging and it hurts! Wish i can return it and get cuff instead

    • Yeah I hear ya. I’ve had to take mine off. It was still a bit too tight and just wasn’t comfortable and easy to slip in.

  • One thing that Peak Design didn't think of is adding a 1/4 thread to add accessories such as a Spider or Cotton Carrier system. I always use a cotton carrier hub to attach at my hip or Spider for my belt. Particularly whilst in hand held mode for Weddings, etc. It's a shame they missed the boat on that as I am a KS backer

    @davidfromdownunder@davidfromdownunder11 ай бұрын
    • That would be a great feature to allow for more extensibility of the product. It’s a shame!

  • For everyone saying that he needs an I plate not an L plate, I have an L plate and it is still very, very small on my r6. I'm not sure why they designed it like this. I can hardly fit 2 fingers, and when I do, its hard to press all of the buttons. If the strap was a little longer, it might actually work as intended.

  • The Peak Design video shows a better way to adjust then strap and get the full pad over both fingers.

    • Ah you're right! This definitely would've helped although I think my opinion about the micro clutch still remains the same.

      @GoingAwesomePlaces@GoingAwesomePlacesАй бұрын
    • @@GoingAwesomePlaces I recently got mine and had to do quite a bit of adjustment from both ends to get that pad where I wanted it. Not perfect but for some applications it will come in handy but not my every day carry choice for sure. I dislike having a strap around my neck but worry if hand carrying, I may get bumped in a crowd and drop the camera, so this is good for that on my Leica M but in every other setting it is awkward to use.

      @anthonymiller8979@anthonymiller897929 күн бұрын
    • @@anthonymiller8979 Sweet, I'm glad that it's working! The adjusting is key because I felt my hand wasn't the most comfortable in mine. One thing I'm not sure if you've felt is that sometimes I want a bit more distance between my camera and my hand so that's why I've leaned more towards the PD cuff.

      @GoingAwesomePlaces@GoingAwesomePlaces29 күн бұрын
    • @@GoingAwesomePlaces Yep, I want it tight to carry and walk, but more room when ready to shoot and no way to adjust it on the fly. I have the larger Clutch on my big camera and even there need to snug it down, then loosen it up each time which is awkward. My favorite is the Artisan & Artist ACAM-108 strap that is a short neck strap with a built in wrist strap. I usually carry it using the wrist strap part similar in fashion to the PD Cuff, but when I need my hands free I can put the strap over my neck.

      @anthonymiller8979@anthonymiller897928 күн бұрын
  • Looks like you def need an L plate for that camera. I was hoping the strap would be longer to make a 3 finger grip, but it looks like they somehow missed the mark with the customizability of the strap and hypalon pad. I personally use the cuff only when I dont have the neck strap on (almost never). If anything I might DIY my clutch onto the microclutch plate. Thanks for putting out the video so quickly!

    @TygerTygerBrnigBrght@TygerTygerBrnigBrght11 ай бұрын
    • Yeah, I realized that pretty quickly too as I was blabbing away. I was like oh shit....this is totally not going to work but I figured I'd finish it anyways. Another thing I realized is that with the OM-1, the split ring is at the top of the camera vs with Sony, Fuji, and Nikon, it's on the side, which gives you more to work with. When it's at the top like that, and you have a larger mirrorless camera, I'm at the maximum and my hand still feels too restricted. For my shooting style, I've slowly gotten away with the neck strap mainly because I"m so reliant on Capture. And when I'm not using that, I have one of the Slings where I just place the camera in the bag directly. I was hoping that the Clutch would be a more minimal set up vs the cuff. I'm not convinced yet but let's see how things go with the L-Plate.

      @GoingAwesomePlaces@GoingAwesomePlaces11 ай бұрын
    • @@GoingAwesomePlaces I wish there were larger or longer split rings, I was looking for them to double mount anchors onto my cam so I can have the leash and neck strap on separate anchors. I think that could solve the issues where the top mounting point is further for some cameras. It looks like you may be able to loop an anchor around the bottom of the micro clutch at the very least by how they described being able to use it in conjunction with a neck strap. Also, there may be just enough space at the bottom anchor for two anchors? Lots of things to follow up on! The more Im thinking about it, the micro clutch doesnt offer any overall improvements over my current setup with the original clutch. The only issue I have with the original clutch is that it is looser on the bottom, which the micro clutch addresses. But honestly that isnt a big deal for me. If I were to use the micro clutch I'd lose out on the convenience of the battery door being easy accessible (which I dont really use as a casual shooter), add bulk with the bottom plate, and generally increase complexity. At this point this is a meh purchase at this point even if the micro clutch turns out to be more ergonomic for me, and is more so to support PD as they produce quality products (fingers crossed for tripod v2 they hinted at) and jump on the discounts for accessories theyre offering backers.

  • Interesting to see you try this on an E-M1-styled body. I think even if you had an L-plate, there wouldn't be much space for you to put your fingers into under the clutch. The grip of the OM-1 and other previous E-M1 models makes this unnecessary, IME. I have enough room to put my pinky on the whole grip. I have experienced the same satisfaction of grip size on the GH6, and I suspect the G9 won't need this new clutch. The cuff is enough.

    @RyougiVector@RyougiVector11 ай бұрын
    • Yeah I hear ya. Part of me is wondering if we’ve just been really lucky with the design of the grips of the EM/OM bodies. They’ve always been so comfortable to hold and they keep getting better with each iteration. I’m also thinking maybe it’s the full PD clutch that I need to compare against as well.

      @GoingAwesomePlaces@GoingAwesomePlaces11 ай бұрын
    • @@GoingAwesomePlaces the clutch could work, but i also like using the capture clip plate, and i think the peak design anchors would get in the way of that

  • Appreciate your objective review. I think it's too cumbersome to replace a battery in the field, especially when a bird is ready to fly or a leopard is ready to leap. Then it would be horrible if the wrench is misplaced or lost.

    @marydoo7311@marydoo73116 ай бұрын
    • You’re absolutely right. In Japan, I gave it an honest go for 2 weeks but just found myself very frustrated when I needed to change my battery and of course as you know, it always happens when you least expect it and the worst timing. I’m back to the leash again.
