  • My grandma made this. She had it as a very frugal recipe without eggs, rum and the option to use shortening instead of butter. It’s still delicious. The changes were necessary growing up in a very large farm family in rural Canada during the Great Depression.

    • Noticed that, too. Thanks for clarifying. Ive make a french apple cake last season that was amazing...though i reduced the rum a bit. Im actually planning to use the pears from my tree. Im sure the rum will b delicious with the pears, too!

      @sknap2728@sknap27288 ай бұрын
    • @@sknap2728Years ago I started making pear pies instead of apple. I'll never go back. Pears are such a lovely flavor but the trick is to select ones that are very firm and crisp or else they will exude too much liquid when baked. I also put in finely grated or chopped fresh ginger root because it really compliments the pear. I'll have to try this cake and make it a pear/ginger. 😊

      @jaycarver4886@jaycarver48868 ай бұрын
    • Oh, I would probably skip the rum. I like it in a nice cocktail but not in sweets. Personal preference I guess but I hate any booze flavor in sweets. 😂

    • Thanks for the mention of brandy. I don’t care for the flavour of rum, and wondered if brandy would make a good substitute.

    • Food Wishes and Preppy Kitchen is almost similar in ingredients - only difference is the method of prep, sugar is less in Food Wishes and little less alcohol by 1 tablespoon - recipes are both almost the same, I will however use Preppy kitchen since the castor sugar where in work is coarse ground and take ages to dissolve in butter whipping

    • I have made this recipe several times for my family. It is a new favorite. I have also made this with peaches instead of apples. I have never used rum, but instead, I soak my fruit in apple or peach brandy and combine in the mixture. But I'm sure rum would be great too. I just haven't tried that way yet.

  • Hello John. This apple cake looks amazing and I’m sure I will try it this fall, but I have been binge watching your lemon playlist. In one of those videos you mentioned in passing your mother’s lemon roll cake that you loved as a kid. I would love to see that recipe.

  • I'm obsessed. I've been making 1/2 portions of your BEAUTIFUL cake every weekend. I can never stick to a recipe. I added 2 tbs vinegar to the cut apples, cinnamon and reduced the amount of sugar as I have a more European palate. I've also made it with pear and toasted almonds, added almond essence and substituted the rum for Cognac, as I think it goes well with pear. What makes this such a success of a recipe is how easy it is and the massive fruit content. I think it would be great with a plum and prune mixture during winter... maybe even sprinkle a few bitter chocolate shavings in it, I think that would be great with rum. I'd also like to try this with peaches and candied orange in spring/summer ❤

I added a healthy pinch of cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg as well as a healthy dash of cream, too. Other than being a bit too sweet I thought this was absolutely lovely, it would make a perfect little breakfast treat. Thank you for the recipe!
