  • I am 65 years old now. When I was in third grade walking home from school past Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs; there was usually an elderly couple fishing. As fast as they caught a fish they would fillet it. From little Pearch Bluegill, Crappie, even Rainbow Trout. Watching you fillet those Pearch has brought back that memory. That old fellar could fillet a fish, re-bait and back in the water in about a minute and a half. Thanks for showing this forgotten art to modern fisherman. BRAVO!!!

    • I would like you guys to answer a question I have. In Sweden (that is known for its clear environment) pregnant women are recommended to NOT eat any fish from the lakes. Also, if I child eats a herring from the Baltic Sea (yeah, that’s toxic as hell), than the child should not eat any fish from the Baltic Sea for a year. Those are recommendations from our health department🤷‍♂️. My question is, what recommendations do you guys in America have? Are your waters safer/less toxic? Yes it’s true, older fatty fish is collecting more toxins over the years.

      @RogersRigs@RogersRigs3 жыл бұрын
  • Back in the early '60s we used to catch about 100 perch on a good day in Lake Erie. We used a spreader with minnows, usually cut into about four sections. It was great fun catching double-headers. The thing is though, no one would have ever kept perch that small. No need to. Wasn't worth the work of cleaning them, and there were always plenty of the adult size. Come the early 70s though, the size began to go down and people had to start keeping the little guys like you have there. Either way though, what a bummer it was to spend a whole day fishing, come home tired, and have to start cleaning 100 fish. My dad sent my brother down the block to ask my uncle one Saturday if they wanted some perch. My uncle wisely asked if they were cleaned. When he was told no, he declined the gift. Pissed my dad off that his brother would have the nerve to ask such a question. Made perfect sense to me. Catching 100 perch was great fun...cleaning 100 was another story. Nobody fileted perch back then. That meant you needed a couple slices of bread to push down those tiny bones when they got stuck in your throat. Catching fish is the only fun part.

    • @@hellosweetheart3350 THank YOU for asking. Well i actually give a lecture to cover all those questions, but it takes me about an hour with a whiteboard, video and props. But let me try to boil it down. First research the lake. check out sites like iceshanty.com and read comments on Wolf lake. download the navionics app to your phone and look for the likely fishy spots. if other people are fishing it, talk to them or fish where someone else already drilled a bunch of holes. (they probably caught something if the punch a bunch of holes. the other biggie is the time of day. some lakes are only good for the first and last hour of the day. finally what you use matters. i only sell about 12 things on www.rogersrigs.com but they all work very well on perch and there are videos explaining how they work and why they work. I'm teaching a class in a month, i may try to record it and post it for all the tricks and concepts, but this is a start. feel free to email me with questions as well. I am on an anti skunked campaign. Oh one last thing. How long has wolf lake been frozen? if it is a small pond with limited oxygen and it has been frozen since november, the fish could be in a very lethargic state, and it is better t focus on another lake till the late ice melt brings in new oxygenated water to wake them up again. #i said too much in a youtube thread reply :-) Good luck! -ROger

  • Not too shabby. I was taught a little differently as many others probably have. The guy who taught me actually fillets perch and crappies for a living and he showed me a super sweet cutting technique with perch. No gutting involved or head and tail removal. You don't even have to touch the guts. The result is two full fillets with the two fillet skins and the whole perch body as the throw away, guts intact. It definitely took me some time to get the angles of the fillet knife just right so the cuts are clean and quick with little mess. Blew my mind when he first showed me how he does it. I used to make such a mess before he taught me this technique..lol.. Soo many ways to do it though, aslong as the end result is the same thats what really matters and speed comes later with repetition. Good stuff man! Beer battered perch yumm!! Poor man shrimp!
