That was one of the most terrifying and ingenious things I've ever seen!
That's amazing! I did think it would all jam up suddenly at the start, but it worked a charm. Very innovative. That's what I love about your woodworking videos, they make my brain re-wire itself and accept new ways of looking at stuff.
Well done! Very clever of you. I look forward to your videos. All the best to you, Sir.!
I was looking at your setup and thinking to myself, "OMG, he's not going to do what I think he's going to -- he is. He seriously is." :-) This was Matthias Wandel-quality crazy/clever.
I actually got here through one of Matthias' videos.
People say much the same when I take to wood spinning on my Lathe, with a 4 inch Makita angle grinder & tungsten tip rotary power chisel (Arbortec wood carver pro). It works so well I’m going to make a dedicated copy Lathe with the angle grinder and wood carver out of my 2nd Lathe & keep it for repetitive baluster type work, where it’s mounted on a cross slide that follows the desired shape template. I’m of half a mind to use CNC & stepper motors to automate it!
Janis Cortese u
Wow! That is really cool.
J Cortese Matthias is a freaking GENIUS!
Fantastic! You utilize the potential of the tool beyond its typical use.
"I think not bad" is truly an understatement. That is really thinking outside of the box.. I wish I had the need for some wooden balls.
That sounds like what Gapetto said just before deciding that Pinocchio was to be a boy.
Thomas Russell hahaha
You must use them to play croquet!
+Thomas Russell LMAO - That is one of the best comments I have seen in a while
I'm thinking wood and resin. It'll need some touching up to make it glassy, but it's a good start.
This is definitely a safety squints engaged, mom on speed dial scenario. 😂
Sketchier as frig
2 condoms as well
Chip Ormsby im pretty sure even in safety glasses I would squint
Extremely high pucker factor
carolyn mmitchell I'm squinting through the screen.
Thanks for the video. It's great to see videos like this where people think outside the box. To be honest, I was waiting for the hole saw to grab hold of the wood and something go flying. A little bit of danger always makes projects more fun!
Thanks Sergio, this gave me the idea on how to make planters with these balls attaches to the four wooden posts for a good finish!!!
You are one clever man that never ceases to amaze me. Oh how I wish you were my neighbour!
Great, I have a shop too. We could be unpopular together.
Here in Brazil we have a name for these clever improvisations that looks like could go very wrong, gambiarra. And you sir is a gambiarra master.
Maybe if your rounded the wood first it might run smoother, less drag on the outside of the hole saw. Or, when you get close, use a parting tool or SHARP chisel to open the outside gap a bit.
Thomas Russell I agree.
Thomas Russell killer what's your channel name where you did the way you said? I cant wait to watch it
Awesome technique!
Awesome! I have lathe/mill and this is by far the most easy way to make a sphere!
You sir have some balls
pete a And they're not brass.
HAHAHAHA
And they are made of wood!
There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity.
Very ingenious and effective. I imagined there would be several quite delicate processes, but you did it all in one go!
Mr. Padin.......you Sir, have an incredible eye and thought process for developing new ways of doing projects. You are an artist and I thank you for your videos that have given me ways to build many of my own projects.
ingenious!!! i've never thought of that... well done!
I have the exact same hobbist lathe in my shed, hardly used and gathering dust, I will get it out tomorrow and give this great idea a try, you sir, are a genius!!
Muito bom Sergio... método prático e eficiente parabéns ..vou tentar fazer.grande abraço.
Why people give thumbs down? This is beautiful simplicity.
Out of 1.3 million views,if only 1 percent lost their fingers trying this, that's still 13 000 people!!! lol....Nice job on this...I might give it a try myself. Cheers from Canada.
Buen experimento, pero la textura final es muy burda. Buen trabajo Sergio.
WOW, that is awesome
Sergio, thank you. It is really easy, fast and useful idea.
Another genius on KZhead. That's two I've come across in the last hour.
This is brilliantly simple and works great! I’m amazed Thanks for the video
I am thoroughly impressed by your ingenuity! Not to mention your fearlessness of completely cutting through the wood. I probably would've cut and sanded the last bit just for safety. And fear of injury( lol)! Great video again. If I wouldn't have already subscribed I would have after this one!
This man has balls of wood for trying this, literally. Don't you just love YT.
That is very clever. Thanks for sharing. I was terrified and thrilled at the same time.
hahahahaha Yes, it was 😅
I've been wondering about this for several years now. Now I don't have to try it myself. Thank you for the great vid
Great stuff! I would never have envisioned this. Real imaginative work!
Very clever way to turn wooden balls, thanks for sharing!
Pure genius, I wish my dad was still alive. He would have loved this.
Just wonderful , I make patterns for sand casting and making a ball is not easy , but your method is brilliant thank you
AMAZING! I've gotta try this, thank you, buddy!!!
Trabajo fantástico muy bueno !
Parabéns muito criativo
Howdy Doodie would have been thrilled with this one.
Wow, this is really awesome. It looked a bit scary though. Which rpm did you use on your drill/lathe? Backwards or forwards? And which rpm did you use on the drill press? How long did it take to make one ball? Did you not fear that during the process the block of wood/ball would come loose and hurt you? Thanks for sharing and I hope you can answer the questions. I'd very much like to try this too.
RPM depends on the size of wood. The formula is: Work piece size (inch) x RPM = 6000 - 9000. If work piece is 3 inch, RPM should be: RPM = 6000 - 9000/3 = 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm range. Hope this helps.
that is so weird what you told. that is the most weird formula i ever seen. i am a machinist myself and i can tell you the the rpm is a factor of what you are cutting and whit what material you cut it and also the diameter. the normal formula is : ø : π : (cutting speed) = RPM???? so as example if i wanna cut steel round 40 with a highspeed steel tool which is best for around 20meters. its : 20,000 : 3,14 : 40 = 159 rpm.
I do not know if Pips Piper is right with his answer or BomenJager. I only know that in general larger diameters of material require lower speed than smaller diameters. And I also know that in general for wood is used higher speed than for metal/steel. But in any case I'd like to hear a reaction of Sergio himself because his speed was OK and I think that he knows which RPM he used.
BomenJager is right, pips is just plain bogus. But the direction of the lathe don't matter in this particular situation as the hole saw is sawing both directions perpendicular to the lathe Z axis.
But the example from BomenJager is for steel and in the video wooden balls are made. I suppose the rpm should be in that case higher than 159 rpm. Or not? And which rpm is meant for the drill/lathe or for the drill press?
What a fantastic idea
that's some great wooden balls
This is genius! Love it!
melhor maneira de fazer bolas de madeira que eu já vi
Thank you for the inspiration teaching us how to build one now I want to build this set up very cool
Nice .. thanks for sharing Sergio
Perfect! a great idea! Thank you!
Nice job, Sergio... you never disappoint.
Great job Sergio, once again !
This is a very clever idea, brilliant actually! Great idea for making fence post caps or other exterior ornaments, might be a tad heavy for a Christmas tree ornament though, but I love the idea. Thanks just subscribed.
Nice little trick!
Amazing bro!!! I had a piece of 4x4 fly off my lathe one time...definitely had to change my underwear haha.
Good job you could try stopping the hole saw wile the ball is still connected by 5mm or so and sand wile it’s still on the lathe then saw the tabs still contact
Sergio Acuña Padin
Congrats for your idea, it works great! Love it
Good job, sand it while spinning prior to it breaking off then touch up the ends👌🏽
It is very amazing. Thank you sir for this video.
You sir, are The Man!
This is not so dangerous if go slowly with low power tools just like he did. Very clever method... Thanks for sharing!
I've did it to make some of those pinterest pencil ball rings, the setup is a bit tedious but work like charm when is needed to batch more than one or two! The only problem is the red color left on the piece, i've solved it stripping the paint entirely from the holesaw.
I am going to produce these balls in mass quantities most probably by using your method..... Thanks a lot bro you are genius man ...
Brilliant project
That was superb! You're a star!!
Per Almered de
Per Almered I’m just happy that you spelled “you’re” correctly. Most others don’t. You’re the superb person.
One of the things this video taught me is how people make those fancy wooden railings.
Obrigado pela dica! estava procurando algo assim. Thank
Had I not seen it with my own eyes . . . Amazing.
What a terrible idea.... I LOVE IT! Good job.
That was really interesting to see. Amazing idea.
Just tried this on my mini wood lathe I had to put wood under my piller drill to get the height but it works a wonder. this is something else I have learnt off u tube
Cool video! Thanks!
Brilliant!!! Just F'in Brilliant !!!
So great and smart. As usual with you
A great idea ,simple thanks for sharing 👍
That’s really clever! I’m glad the ball didn’t fly off at the end 😅
This is genius! Good job!
I say, what a clever idea! With a bit of imagination and invention................
impressive. worked quite well.
I didn’t expect that to work!
AWESOME
Amazing!! And amazingly brave! Very interesting vid Sergio, thanks for sharing.
Brilliant Sergio! very nice :-) thanks
Woah. What an awesome idea. Great job. BALLSSSSS!!!
unique idea.never imagined that before.excellent.
Excellent!
the cutting tool has to turn way faster than the ball itself otherwise you get a point where the direction of cutting and direction of spinning is the same and that is why it might be rough.
Like 'retreating blade stall' in a helicopter. At a certain speed, the rotor blade rotating backwards relative to the direction of flight is effectively at zero airspeed, no longer generating lift on that side, and the chopper falls out of the sky. Good pickup @Anton Markov. You could have a point there.
That is so sweet I can't wait to try it nice find my friend.
Very ingenious idea. Thanks for the video.
Thats a great idea
A pretty easy technique, thumbs up. I'm a bit afraid to try it myself, because it looks like the drill press may not be suited for this sort of turning operations and may be damaged or degrade pretty quickly
your the man dude
Genius. Thank for this video bro
Nice Job
i wish i came up with that idea in 7th grade wood shop i would of for sure got an A+
Thank you!
Awesome man..
very nice trick to know. thanks
Looks good.
Bravo neat solution
I LIKE,Really GOOOOOOD.
Nice man! I'll remember this.
Buen video !!!
