To be honest, the ref screwed the wrestler up with that break late in the second round. Buddy had a strong side control.
Rosholt was showing zero interest in using that position to attack a submission or do any damage to Lewis. It was control for its own sake, which is exactly what the new unified rules aim to eliminate. The ref made a good call.
Kinda, but too much of that with no real action and what happens? The crowd boos. Can't put on a fight if nobody buys tickets and it's the ref's job to make sure the match is entertaining.

So many comments on here are entirely incorrect. You can tell who is a fighter or has fought and knows a damn thing about MMA instead of just being a fan boy. Derrick goes into flight or fight mode like this often when he knows that he does not have the stamina to continue. He uses every last bit of energy he has to try to finish the opponent in hopes his heavy handed swings will land good enough to know them down or out.

The Ref defo worked the fight in DL favour he is exciting fighter taking nothing away from him but he had zero chance of making it back off canvas when his opponent was sprawling all over him!
i love lewis but that last stand up was questionable seemed like he was trying to advance his position just fine.
If the ufc stood fighters up like this we would never have the boring khabibs and kamarus trying to lay on other men

MMA has become another WWE show. There are no more PRIDE or early UFC combatants like Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Matt Hughes, GSP, Tito Ortiz, etc. It's a sham. Cage-side Announcers are loud cheerleaders trying to lather up the crowds. So-called "fighters" rarely perform at a professional competitive level. Sad, but the female MMA combatants do a much better job of passionate competition than the males. It has become a paycheck and a big PPV payday for promoters.

If you aren't taking damage, let him waste all his energy grappling you.. you save all your energy & once you open up, opponent has nothing left to stop you.
I'd rank Derek in the top 10 for sure but probably even top 5 of the hardest hitting heavyweights of all time.

@@michaeljones5622 looked to me like derrick lewis was doing a good job of keeping his knee high to block going to mount. Derrick lewish is very good at exploding/strengthing his way off the ground when his opponent tries to transition to a submission or different position. It might look like Derrick lewis was begging for a transition to S-mount and armbar or something else, but if Rosholt shifted his weight too much then Lewis would probably use that moment to muscle out of there. There's a compilation of him getting up when a bunch of different heavyweights have him on the bottom. without using a sweep or anything , just using a lot of strenght and some explosivity at the right time when the other guy is shifting his weight and trying to transition or submit. he looks like a deceptively difficult guy to keep down and get a lot of damage on.
