  • We have wild skunk visitors regularly. As many as eight different big, shaggy skunks come through our yard every night. I've allowed access through the fence so they stopped digging under it. They don't live here but they like our compost piles. They have always been very sweet and curious. In ten years no people or animals have been sprayed. Our Bichon sits quietly watching them. I guess some people have problems with skunks. We think they are adorable. They have never been a problem for us and we enjoy having skunks around. I just started recording the skunks and posting the clips. Recently raccoons have also made our yard a nightly stop. They have been gentle and calm. I'm vaccinated against rabies.

    • Invite one to live under your home. Let it engulf your whole house in it's sour filthy odor. Then tell me how adorable you think they are.

  • In Texas, we are required to put skunks down if we trap them. So, trying to make them move on will always be the first thing to try. They are the highest carriers of rabies here. Sometimes, ya gotta put 'em down, though. I have a drowning tank for them if they refuse to move on, Shooting is not very safe and you'll cause a lot of spray. I have always been amazed at animal control people injecting a pink kill solution because the skunks never fight the needle going in. They had the syringe on a rod with a string attached to the syringe. They'd just put it through the trap and plunge it into their chests while pulling on the string. Dallas does not take wild animals any more. That really leaves us with only putting them down. You have to have permission to release animals anywhere and no one wants an unlimited supply of wild animals dumped on their property. I have 500 competitors in DFW, Where's this magic place that can take a steady stream of animals with no negative consequences? I do let squirrels go in my front yard. It's legal, but they run off the property in 1.5 seconds. Oh well.

    • No. You never have to put them down. People are the biggest invasive species on the planet. Maybe we should put you down.

    • The trick must be getting them in the drowning tank without spraying you.

  • I got a skunk recently decided to reside under my house. I was confident he was out then covered the hole back up. I then used straight ammonia and a lot of it where the hole is thinking he wouldn't dig there. Wrong! I went out today and the hole was there again, he dug it back out. I'll try the cayenne, but that seems like overkill on the amount you're using. Btw, if you've got those big digging hornets, the ammonia will get rid of them.
