  • The Chief Executive of McDonald's was paid a 17+ million dollars a couple of years ago. It would take the average McDonald's workers 1,200 years to make that amount. So McDonald's can easily afford those wages without raising the cost of their products. Corporate greed needs to be curtailed and they need to pay higher federal income taxes.

    @selah71@selah71Ай бұрын
    • It's not the corporate branch of McDonald's that is saddled with the burden of the higher wages. McDonald's franchises the name out and if you've seen "The Founder" you know that they actually own all the land every McDonald's is built on and then rent it out to the franchisees. It's kind of like the feudal system when you think about it. The people who own the franchises will suffer the most, however I'm sure the vast majority of them will be able to absorb the hit. The lady in this story franchises 11 locations, and a woman in the story I saw yesterday had 21. So, if they weren't making a decent amount of money they wouldn't be able to open so many branches. Corporate greed is definitely something that needs to be curtailed sooner than later, but in this case it's not the higher ups in that structure that are being affected. So it will be business as usual for them.

      @TheMr02drop@TheMr02dropАй бұрын
    • The only thing I can find on how much a franchise owner makes and everything I found seems to be a mean of 150k per year and if she owns 11 I feel like she will still be okay if she raises her employees wage.

    • @@TheMr02drop Thank you for your reply. McDonald's corporation net income in 2021 was over 7 billion dollars in the USA. They could cut the yearly percentage charged to franchise business owners in half, and McDonald's would still make billions.

    • @@selah71 Oh, I'm not arguing that. They could take a lot less profits and still be VERY well off. But this is not how corporate culture/capitalism works. If someone makes a million dollars one year, and then the next year makes only $850k, and then the next year only makes $750k they are seen to be in a downtrend and bordering on failure. The problem with capitalism is that every year you need to make more...and the big corporations make so much right now that it's hard to make more year in year out. So when a law gets passed to hurt their bottom line they are going to do everything in their power to offset that instead of just saying "ok, we get it, we've been making a ton of money, it's time to start giving back to our workers and franchisees." Look at the auto union labor strikes and writer strikes that went on this past summer. Executives were having a conniption because they might have to make a little less profit in order to get workers to agree to terms. It's disgusting. And to your point corporate greed needs to be addressed, however I don't believe politicians will address the root source because they get so much money from lobbyists and political pacs. A simple raise of the minimum wage isn't going to solve the problem, it is just a small band-aid. There needs to be a law put in place that a top earner at a company can only earn like 100 times when the lowest earner earns. But that will never happen until the culture in the country changes.

    • And here's the ironic thing, She's a capitalist, Yet currently when a worker doesn't get a living wage, then we the taxpayer have to pay the difference in social security payments to all those workers to have enough to live. So in a way the owner of the business is having her staff wages subsidised by us the tax payer. But making her pay them the living wage, is making her run her business the way capitalists profess how businesses should work properly, i.e. supply and demand. No demand and the business falls over, lots of demand and it booms. Meaning if customers now think her product is too expensive and don't buy it, her business model will fail. Therefore she is running a business that fails to survive in the capitalist market. Currently she is running a business that survives on social security handouts to its staff. She's currently living a lie

So the only controllable costs was maintenance and worker pay. Franchises should have the right push back on the brand and demand lower costs and be able to buy elsewhere. • Well Mr. Holt I think that it's a good thing that they are raising the minimum wage to $20.00 a hour in the great state of California because years ago I was checking into how much it cost here in Las Vegas,Nevada and it was $250,000 Dollars to own like a Wendy's Franchise and I lived in the great state of California and the cost living was really high.
