My escape from North Korea | Hyeonseo Lee | TED

2013 ж. 19 Нау.
21 019 857 Рет қаралды

As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee thought her country was "the best on the planet." It wasn't until the famine of the 90s that she began to wonder. She escaped the country at 14, to begin a life in hiding, as a refugee in China. Hers is a harrowing, personal tale of survival and hope -- and a powerful reminder of those who face constant danger, even when the border is far behind.

    • What's worse is that the families of those who do get out are often tortured, imprisoned, and even killed. Not just immediate family, but even extended family. To make you think long and hard about whether your freedom means enough to sacrifice the lives oof so many others. Her talk gives no details, but I'm sure she experienced many unspeakable things. She's afraid to talk in case she still has other family there who could be hurt, or bc she doesn't want to lose her composure. There's one guy who escaped north Korea who didn't speak up for many years bc his sister was still there and he didn't want her punished bc of him. After she went crazy in prison there (God only knows what they did to her!) and was released bc she is now like a child mentally, he began talking about the atrocities going on there.

• You can help organizations like human rights watch or Amnesty international. Or look for a organizations in your town. Maybe you can help homeless people or you can help poor kids with their homework if their parents cant do that. There are plenty of ways to help and every little bit of kindness helps to creat a better world. Just google the name of your town and voluntary service for inspiration how you can do something against suffering!

    • ***** China's relations with DPRK is terrible nowadays though, they *really* don't like North Korea's nuclear program, and they certainly don't like how they've been sinking Chinese fishing boats lately. As late as February this year, China withdrew all their remaining investments in DPRK, which only goes to prove that their relations are going down hill. The only "close" ally North Korea has left is Russia.

      @GLPentAxel@GLPentAxel7 жыл бұрын
    • ***** They could, but China has never really been interested in doing that kind of stuff, especially not during the late 200 years or so (interior politics is WAAAY more important than foreign politics in China, especially compared to western countries *coughcoughUSA*, but even European countries as well). They certainly wouldn't want to waste an opportunity on getting some great business deals out of it though, that's for sure. I feel sorry for you being delusional about Islam, but I will not argue about that here, there are way too many arguments on KZhead about it.

  • She just made me realize I have absolutely no right to complain about all my stupid problems, they're literally nothing. (Edit: Guys, I didn't say my problems don't matter at all. Obviously we all have problems and they're not irrelevant. I said I don't have the right to complain about all my stupid problems, like getting too much homework or having to get up too early in the morning, etc. Compared to this, those are nothing. Nobody likes getting too much homework, but it's really not that bad. Some people are in way worse situations than I am, and instead of complaining about these small things, we should be grateful for what we have. For example I often complain about the smallest things, but in reality I have a family, a house to live in, enough food, I can go to school, I don't have to fear for my own or my loved ones' lives, and compared to others I have a really good life. Obviously I have my own problems just like everyone else does, and they do matter, but I shouldn't complain about all those small things that I find slightly uncomfortable. I hope you could understand what I was trying to say and I hope you have a nice day💜)
