Chamonix Segment Part 1

Пікірлер
  • My brother introduced me to this film in 1992 before booking our first ski trip. It turned out to be a movie that changed our life. We would watch this movie 4 or 5 times a day and became obsessed with mountains and adventure. 20 years on i'm yet to see such an inspirational ski movie! My children will see this film and hopefully theirs!

  • As an ever-aging 50-year-old curmudgeon, I will always contend you haven't really skied until you've snapped into some skinny 205s and really gotten after it. If you haven't yet tried it, find some old sticks and try it. If nothing else, it will make you a better skier on those fats.

    • I have a pair of 203 Kastles. I still ski them occasionally, whenever the conditions are iffy. Plant your weight right over the center and fly.😁. They punch through everything.

  • Anyone who calls themselves a skier needs to watch this masterpiece. Dudes were sending stuff on 205's that dudes with fat skis would shit themselves over. One of the best movies ever, Definitely gives you more respect for what we do on a daily basis every winter.

  • Scot and Glen get most of the glory but Mike Hatrup is one of the all time greats aswell...A vast majority of the awesome ski segments are of Mike too.

    • The film's opening jump at Chamonix is Mike--I love Mike's style of skiing as well, none of them you could mistake for the other. Glen probably has the most composed jumping technique, Scot has the most beautiful turns, and Mike looks like a powerful dude so in love with what he is doing and just barreling through the snow right on the edge.

  • I'm a boarder but I can appreciate crazy. The things they are doing with ski and snowboard construction these days make a huge difference. These guys were doing insane stuff on practically narrow sticks.

  • I had this on VHS back in the day. Skiing has been a big part of my life and all of my friends, its been a way of life. As many people have commented the change in ski design really did change skiing and make it much easier to ski off-piste. I think everyone should have to ski on a pair of old school skies at least once.

    @mtadams2009@mtadams20093 жыл бұрын
    • I too had this on VHS played it continuously, skiing a big part of my life, modern skis make things much easier. I don't agree everybody should try long skis, but I had a lot of fun on them.

      @roberttreborable@roberttreborable Жыл бұрын
    • Totally agree. Sick of this “pow obsession” from any idiot that owns a pair of skis - some of us paid our dues the hard way on rope tows, t bars, and skinny 205’s for all conditions instead of huge rocker skis that allow you to learn in 1 day.

  • Mr. Stump's choice of music for this scene is felicitous. You can't help getting pumped up, between the skiing and ACT's "Snobbery and Decay" from their album, "1988, Laughter, Tears and Rage."

  • Thabks ZZT for adding the extra depth through the music.... Changed a lot of god mates only into rock with this film.... and, we'd play it back LOUD AS. all the way through, then jumped in our cars to head of on our week annual ski massacre.... The 6 hour drive was always a highlight....

  • The best that will ever be made!! Because of this film I spent a couple of seasons in Cham and a couple in Canada. Still have the purple Spyder one piece somewhere?! Ahh, those skinny skis - only way to ski IN waist deep powder, rather than skim over it with 2 snowboards strapped to your feet. Ahhh, 30ft + cliff jumps with the hip check landing, the only way to check for rocks in the landing zone for your mates. Ahhhh, the mohawk, the only helmet you need skiing at 60-70 clicks in a VW beetle sized mogul field. Ahhhhh, Chamonix, France - where you have the right to kill yourself off a 3800m+ offpiste beast!! Ahhhhhh, the Bizzard of Ahhhhhhhs!!!

    • I haven't been skiing since like 93, when I was 13. Snowmass. Started snowboarding in the mid 90s. I wonder if I can still do it. Bust out my wedge techniques that I learned when I was 5 in the kids class. I don't like these weird new wide water skiis people use now. I'm not down with that. I don't understand why skiis suddenly got bigger. Looks goofy. What's the story behind all that?

    • Absolutely, and talk about relaxed -- that recovery of his at the very end of the clip is cosmic. He's almost never away from having his centre of mass in exactly the right place for the given moment, so that even when he loses momentary control of some other aspect, he's in such a strong position to regain it with the minimum effort that situation could conceivably require. I saw a clip of him where he said his early models were racers of the superbly technical but minimalist school, the ones who let their skis do all the work, particularly Thoeni and Stenmark, and it shows.
