1883 Wrench Twisted Handle Wrench [Patent Remake]
I remake a wrench from an 1883 patent by Fredrick H. Seymour. This video is a first in a series of videos I hope to continue making.
This wrench patent was applied for at a time when it seemed like everyone and their mother had an idea about how to make the best wrench. Mr. Seymour did not explain what advantages his wrench design has, but I can assume they were designed for ease of production as drop-forging methods left more finishing work on each piece. I am fairly sure drop-forging wrenches eventually won the great wrench wars of old.
This project was a lot of fun and was fairly simple and straightforward to remake. The most difficult part to make was the lower jaw, but luckily I have access to a mill for that. I case-hardened the entire wrench with some Cherry Red compound. It leaves a very thin layer (a few thousands of an inch) of hardened steel on the surface. I do not know if the original was case-hardened at all or how deep it would be if it was.
You can see the original patent here: patents.google.com/patent/US2...
A similar design was put into production by the Capitol Mfg. Co of Chicago, IL and had different variations and improvements which can be seen here: www.datamp.org/images/13766-3.jpg
Some variations did not even include a twist in the handle.
The design in this patent definitely makes it very easy to think of how to make a wrench with limited tools. You can see a version of this design made in a way that could be very easily made at home: imgur.com/a/tUqBt9S

*THIS* is the kind of fine set dressing we've come to expect from Applied Instrument Resurrection!
Yup, this is where the real magic happens...
You are correct sir
Whaaaaa!!! I found AvE! Like finding Waldo. I'm way too excited about that. Man i need a hobby.
@@poop6d9 And like Waldo, he pops up in the most unexpected places. After all, HTR restores tools and AVE tears them apart (and sometimes a new A hole ie the Juicero). The dichotomy presented here is rather disturbing. Perhaps AVE is passing by for some scookum "puttin er back together" lessons. Then again i am probably reading too much into it. Who knows. Watching these guys is better than a hobby. You don't need tools, you dont get dirty and you dont have your significant other giving you grief about it. They make it feel like you are in the workshop with them. It's a rare talent they have and much appreciated that they share it.
Only the finest! Also, for the 6000th time, I AM NOT DUCLAW, haha.
Plot twist: he’s been speaking the whole time, we just couldn’t hear it through the beard.
I lost it at this. This comment is so good.
Wholly crap!
I thought he spoke Canadian. Boy, was I wrong!
I thought he was Mute this whole time and was limited to gesures of slapping his forehead down on the plexiglass lid of the spray booth
i once told a coworker to speak up because his awesomely manly beard was absorbing most of the sound.
"Machining" the brass adjuster on the drill press was a gag straight from ThisOldTony's playbook, loved it!
Maybe closer to Ichiban Moto playbook? :)
oh shit i actually thought that was real and i was impressed lol
@@ElTurbinado same here haha
@@callumconnolly6665 yeah that was something.. haha
I like that he went straight from saying I'm a machinist now! to doing a hatchet job
Best job of forging round bar into square stock EVER! A true master!
I vote for more of these. Wonderful!
I thumbed up halfway through the fake drag on the pipe. Hillarious!
Wow. That fireplace has a full-on solid "The Friendly Giant" vibe.
Definitely, the Adirondack chair added a magical touch for me too.
Look up, Look WAAAAAAAAAY up
First thing I saw in the shot
Tied the whole shop together dude.
@@justchillinout2002 Such a wave of nostalgia. RIP Rob Homme. Making children happy is such a great use of a life.
Loved how you just sat there for a minute. Brilliant!
Great idea. More brining old patents to life please
Shaved your beard?! I hope you make a new one 😉
Haha, it grows 1inch every hour.
Maybe he's restoring the old one
This was great. I love the idea of bringing old ideas to life. Bringing a 100 year old sketch to life as something tangible that can be held in the hand.
At times it can be difficult to "see" how an old design would look and work, so I'm looking forward to more videos like this!
What a great remake of that era wrench. First time I have ever seen one like this, and I am 81 years old. After reading several of the comments, it suddenly dawned on me that he had shaved his beard. I would make a terrible witness when it came to describing the suspect in a case. Thanks for sharing this project. Ken, Marina California USA
Using a drill press and axe as a lathe and cutting tool, absolutely stunning.
I first thought it was a joke from his side so I was surprised by the result.
It is a joke...you cant put enough lateral side movement with just your hand to knerl metal...let alone use a edge of a axe to cut a channle. My first B.S. moment was when he used a sander to grind down the jaw angles @5:30 minutes. It's called editing (you wouldn't sand when you have a mill). The end result Awsome I must say. If you like this content see This Old Tony he's the best! Peace
@@ramonhernandez3391 boy nothing gets passed you 🧐
Let’s see some Abom Torque put on that baby! 😎💪🏻 Nice job Eric!
Haha thanks! I feel like it can handle up to 1ftlb.
thank you very much for what you do and the humor you do it with. Thank you sir.
One of the best video on your channel. Nice to see the forgotten stuff come back.
Thanks!
Good stuff! Love this format! Lets see how quickly the other rescue channels start building old tools now. You sir are a trend setter in the world of rust!
Best intro yet! Also, I would love to see more videos like this where you resurrect forgotten tools from old patents. Super cool!
I love all your videos 💚 Especially the antics 💚 Thank you ❣ Be Well ❣ 😃👍✌
This is a fantastic 'blast from the past'. Very enjoyable.
Oh man. Over the past few weeks I've watched most of your backlog. Now that there's forging AND tool rescue... my two obsessions are combined into one.
Love the idea of recreating such lovely simple old tools. When I was a little boy, I seem to remember having a kid's tool kit and it had a wrench made just like this, just a lot smaller, but good enough for Mechano.
Awesomeness ! Simply Awesomeness. You definitely honored the original patent
I love the little fireplace on the work bench in the background. It added just that right touch of class.
"One beard has perished during the filming of this video"
Loved the intro! Told the wife to order the wrenches from your website for Christmas. Fingers Crossed!
Your jokes for experts are sublimes. I love it.
I love the miniature stone fireplace on the work bench in the back ground. It gives the whole video a warm, fuzzy, fireside chatsy kind of feeling.
That fireplace is just helping me get closer to winning the "When will the workbench finally burst into flames" pool.
Maybe I light it on fire at 1 million subs. haha.
@@HandToolRescue do it do it
Love the format (Alistair Cooke would be proud), Miss the beard.
As would Alistair Cookie.
I think it was a tribute to TOT.
I am in total shock....he should have warned us....
Man I was roaring with laughter and couldn't even explain why to my family. You are the best!
Restoration and Preservation all in the same vein. Thanks again for the education.
Didn't recognize you for a few seconds, you look so much younger with out the beard. I shaved off mine a couple of weeks ago. Met you in Birmingham UK at the show. Love this video and the level of humour had me laughing out loud. Nice job on the wrench too, one for the collection.
I can't wait for Valve to release this engineer update! Thanks for the sneak peek!
lol the little Fireplace in the background. Classic!!!
Clever idea!! Well done Bud!!☺
my dad shaved off his beard when I was 3 and I screamed .. this provoked a similar reaction
Excellent.
😀
_"The square hole for making square rods"_ *MY SIDES* Blacksmith humor explained because I see in the comments that nobody else got the joke so far: that's called hardy hole, to affix hardy tools (like wedges, chisels, drifts, swage blocks...) that have a square shank so they don't rotate.
Hahaha. Sometimes, I debate using text to be sarcastic as it can lead to people not understanding.
@@HandToolRescue you must be sure to use the "sarcasm" font.
I got that joke, but he almost had me with the knurling tool on the drill press. "Wait, you can do that? Oooooh. Duh."
@@matthbva Yep. HTR know his way around tools, and around jokes, but I just hope nobody tries to machine with an axe :-D
@@notfeedynotlazy It did occur to me that it might be a good idea to highlight the jokes for the sake of people who don't get it. I mean I'm all in favor of natural selection, but...
This is an awesome addition to your usual kind of vids. I approve wholeheartedly. Great job. MOAR PLEASE!
Awesome wrench! Really like seeing creation projects especially this one! Look forward to more!
Love that intro. I also need "Tonight, on a very special episode of Hand Tool Rescue..."
I was disappointed that no bubbles came out of the pipe.
I must find one like that at buy it!
The ole Bart Simpson move
I was thinking the same thing!
I was waiting for the bubbles also....lol
Oh that start with the pipe made me laugh so hard! 🤣thanks for that and your great videos.
I absolutely love your videos!! I look forward to every one of them!!! Please never stop.
Love the patent builds, more please. I thought the Apple peeler was great, I was surprised how well it worked.
6:15 "Hello, 991, what is your emergency?" "I need to report a case of drill press abuse..."
9-1-1!!!
lol human😂
Hello 911, i want to report a missing beard :/
Jak zwykle dobra robota, przyjemnie się ogląda Twoje projekty.
I could watch more of these! This is going to be the new style of restoration videos. Keep ‘em coming!
"The square hole is for making square rod." lol. Nice.
Please tell me you didn't just hit that round rod to make a joke on making square rods... This is dedication, and I love it. XD
Apparently, I have the time for that...
Thank you for taking the time to show us this wrench. Now: I want that!
Keep em coming, love this video format as well as the restoration videos as well.
This looks like the same wrench from the game "Prey", it have the same design. Cool.
WHO. IS. THIS. MAN? Someone stole the HTR channel!! Call the mounties!
It's making strange mouth noises. :D
It's hide the pain Harold's long lost son.
Fantastic build, format, and comedic rendition I enjoyed it
Tu humor es unico, jamas cambies eso. Un gran saludo de un fan en españa!
If you decide to offer this wrench, with the slight improvements you mentioned, I'd gladly buy it. It's absolutely beautiful.
I seem to missed the "Overcomplicated vintage beard trimmer" video. Damn.
I just found one of these wrenches on marketplace. Pretty awesome to finally see one of these in the wild.
Amazing and an incredible result too.
I would pay cash money to hear zefrank1 narrate one of your videos. And I'm already on your patreon.
That's how the wrench do.
I laughed so hard at you two knuckleheads.
This is a brilliant idea. Considering that zefrank1 only released a video every few months, it seems like he should have the time...
zefrank1 would be so appropriate, but what about Lauri Vuohensilta from the Hydraulic Press Channel!!! "And Heeerrrrrreeeee we go!"
Got my wrenches here in England today, thanks so much they are brilliant and will be well used. By the way a pipe works better with tobacco in it, hello to the anti-smoking lobby :)
A guy with no beard can use a pipe any way he wants.
Man, I have no words, this is amazing. Thanks.
Yes, really enjoyed this video and listening to your explanations. Nice!
You missed a golden opportunity to have bubbles come out of that smoking pipe.
I have a blueprint for the Marion model 91 steam shovel if you'd like to have a go!
Very enjoyable! Looking forward to seeing your next build.
Love the commentary on the project at the end of it; though more work, would like to see more of that in the future. Thanks for the great/fun job!
I was waiting for bubbles to come out of your pipe.

Must have had family photos.

You are the one of most craziest persons i'd ever seen in my life. Thank you for your magnificent content.
Wow beautiful job on recreating that older pipe wrench.
HTR probably shaved his face to test the sharpness of a hand plane he was rescuing. Because that's how he do.
Who is this guy? He's not the Hand Tool Rescue we know and love... Imposter!
Loved it! Thank you for sharing
I am dying! The fireplace!!🤣 this is the first time the voice behind the hands hasn’t let me down! Great job
Ok, A. Lost a bet B. Made a beard trimmer C. Screwed up with said beard trimmer D. All the above
A
D
D. Caveat being that he was restoring the old shear style trimmers.
My guess with that beard, sheep shears...😆
E: He was working on some small parts one evening and indirectly contaminated his beard with propellants from the world's most flammable workbench, then caught his face on fire while trying to cook dinner at his gas range.
They should attach the coolant to a fire hose. That'll get the job done.
Release the schmooo!
You mean like this? kzhead.info/sun/p6yDZ76mb4WXY30/bejne.html
He spent almost a full minute on the pipe joke. Hilarious. Best channel on KZhead.
This was a great video; can't wait till the next one.
Darn I was hoping you were going to start selling these like your other wrench....
I could be convinced to do it at some point, but this was definitely time consuming.
Ayy nice to see your here! Love you videos
@@HandToolRescue I would buy one too
Isn’t that the wrench from Prey? You going cosplaying HTR.
yes! Make this wrench! I want one!!
Can somebody give me some context here lol
vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/prey/images/1/16/20170511190450_1.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20170511182811 It's from a video game called prey
I have one of these. I had always assumed it was homemade. Very neat finding out some more information on it!
I love the 1800's so i would really enjoy seeing more videos like this.
In the opening segment, you're looking like a cast member from Band of Brothers.
this wrench in this video I own two of them yet my ones look different, the adjuster is steel not brass, I can send you a picture if you want
less talking more imgur links! we all wanna see....
I have one as well and mine is with the steel adjuster.
You fuckers have youtube accounts, upload a video.
Outstanding results.
Brilliant. I really enjoyed this (as an idea, and the end result)

Следующее видео "как выковать калиброванный пруток" )
Very nice. Thanks for sharing, as always.
I like the fireplace in the background, nice touch.
That intro lmao
I have a hunch that the twist on the handle was intentionally left open as it was drawn as a means of limiting leverage and preventing over-torquing. You feel the spring in the handle start to give, you know your bolt is tight and move to the next one. The type of steel you use and the length could make it a 50 ft lb wrench, or a 60 ft lb wrench. Super cheap and easy torque wrenches for the 1800's? Yes please.
You're a goram genius! Leave 'em hard and temper to the right value. The future is looking good.
Turned out awesome!! Great idea for a video, by the way. I hope you'll do more of these!
Well done! I am looking forward to the next installment!
