    • Thank you for your comment. In France much was destroyed during the chaos and destruction of the Revolution. But it's by no means certain that our royal busts fell victim to the orgy of violence that accompanied these times. The Chateau itself remained untouched. Some of the furniture was sold by the State as one of the Chateau's owners had fled France and was fighting on the royalist side seeking to overturn the Revolution. Other busts on the facades of the chateau were untouched. It seems unlikely that a revolutionary mob would have damaged some (on the very pinnacle of the roof) while leaving others (that were more accessible) alone. The statue of Louis XV was broken into pieces and stored in the antic. This is more consistent with a controlled de-mounting of it, rather than a frenzied attack. It is possible that the bust of Henri IV fell (perhaps during a storm) and Louis XV was taken down after as a preventative measure. This better accounts for the state of each bust.

    • In French 'cave' is the word for a cellar. As the video explains, the head of Henri IV which you can see, was discovered by us in one of a series of ten cellars in the chateau's lower courtyard. Thanks for your question.
