CVT (Continuously variable transmission) is a type of an automatic transmission that is commonly utilized in passenger cars. We will consider the structure and principle of operation of this gearbox on one example.
As a mechanic, I can tell you these are our #1 money maker in the shop. Its a golf cart technology that was implemented into 4000 lbs vehicles. They can be reliable to a degree if you drive like my 80 year old grandma. Slow acceleration, speed limit and no sudden acceleration. The problems surfaces when people drive them like traditional gear transmission. They're not built to handle that. Car manufacturers like them because they are cheaper, lighter and get slightly better mpg so they can advertise for it. I personally would not buy a car with a CVT.
@@AV-wx7sf Ask your mom. I've lubed her engine in the past 😜
I have one in a Cube. I warm it up on the drive everytime before setting off and then drive it carefully. Fingers crossed 😁
Had to replace the oil and transmission fluid more often… poor performance. Not worth it
I second this
Exactly
Your video is a piece of art, and this is the first time I watched your channel. Ninety percent of KZhead content is just a click bait with fake knowledge, but you made my day by showing this.
Love them, hate them, or indifferent towards them, you've got to admit it's an extremely clever design to conceive. Engineers are some very clever people.
No, it's not, it's a design that fails far more often than a regular automatic transmission - that is not clever design.
But is it robust and long lasting?
lets see that clever desing be around in 2050. garbage.
Do …you bought one?
This is one of the finest tutorial i viewed on you tube pertain8ng to cvt...it clarified my daubts.. ..
Had this transmission in a 2018 Nissan Rogue and didn't like it even a little bit. Traded it in on a new Toyota Camry and absolutely love it!
Nissan Note 2006, bought at around 50,000km traded in for another one (only 2009) at 361,000km, no transmission issues whatsoever. That was a lot of long hot miles, proper, timely oil and transmission fluid changes plus sparkplugs etc. Got around 100,000km from one set of front brake pads. Took the time to understand how cvt works internet videos were excellent, and drove it that way. Found it a very relaxing and rewarding experience, even over demanding terrain with two three, or once four hitchhikers and their backpacks crammed in. Follow the Designer's handbook, guys. And far more importantly, the same applies to your own body.
What a excellent explanation! thanks.
my 2016 honda civic 1.8NA engine, hit 159000 km last month, the cvt belt breaks... cost me RM19000(roughly around 4000 usd ) in honda service center, they actually just replace it with a new gearbox i repaired it in outside workshop for just RM3500( roughly around 800USD), they replaced the broken belt and reworked the torque converter
Excellent explanation video, I always wondered how the diameters changed, didn’t realize it was ramping up and down to the fixed side pulley. That’s gotta be hard on that belt after 100K miles of hard driving.
I get manual transmissions but even with this channel's great animation, I still can't get my head around this.
Soon our video course will be released, there will be more of our videos and there will be time dedicated to the manual transmission.
On a very basic level it is a very simple idea at work; two sets of moving plates with chain/belt that mimic gears/sheaves of different sizes, that can change speed ratios between driving and driven side.
@@spol1622its hard to understand without seeing it with your own eyes and being able to touch the parts. i dont get it through a video, your words are like a foreign language

An incredible feat of technology that has caused nothing but headaches for consumers and mechanics alike.
thank you for preparing this video. the graphics were outstanding. I acknowledge the time it took to create the video. your efforts are appreciated thanks. 123
Thanks for sharing. Keep up the animations #OneMessageFoundation!
Amazing this lecture sir
Com essa animação ficou muito explicativo, o sistema cvt é uma obra de arte. Show !
Love your videos!!!
Very Interesting, The idea makes sense.
This video is so informative and simple to understand ... thank you !!!!
Good work
This video worked for me! Got it!
I have Toyota Yaris with CVT tansmission, enjoying to drive it. Perfect invention, good expression with 3D similation, thanks.
wait till the $7000 cvt bill.
makes sense why most car makers went to cvt, less complicated cheaper to make resulting in cheaper cars to sell to the public. Since this thing uses a hydraulic like lever system to change gears it makes sense to constantly change the transmission oil more times than the engine oil.
Awesome
I have a 2017 Honda with the CVT. There is a little lag when starting out, but not that bad. I also have a 2023 Lexus and they improved the transmission by adding an electrical assist. There is no noticeable lag, and if you floor it, it takes off immediately. I rented a 2022 Nissan with a CVT and it was junk. You could feel the car slowing and accelerating while keeping the gas pedal steady. Sometimes when coasting to a stop, it felt like the transmission was holding back the car. I was glad to return it to the airport.
Makes me think of my 1972 Skiroule snowmobile, it had a rubber belt though.
CVT requires careful maintenance which is to change the fluid every 30k km to 50k km the change must be complete with filters, another is the oil temperature must be below 90°C to have derabilidad, bad for the cvt which does not have a belt replacement part This means you have to change all gears and depending on the country you live in, the cost of a new one is very expensive.
200,000 miles on my cvt, runs like new. Beautiful design.
Nice explanation love your videos...❤❤❤
Glad you like the videos:) Thank you
Wonderful video!! Please please make a video on the Torque Converter along with the actual transmission system.🙏🏻🙏🏻 I've seen quite a few animated videos that explain Torque Converter in depth but never tell you what is before and after it -- as in how the actual shifts happen in a 6spd TC, how the transmission reacts when vehicle comes to a stop, etc.
That's that cleared up.
Continuously Vexing Transmission
Very weldon sir
Great ❤👍
Thanks a lot:)
Nice❤😊
The title of this article might be about Ford CVT transmissions, how they don't work, why they constantly malfunction.
Can you please make a video about self adjusting brakes?
By using planetary gear, u could reverse as fast as normal forward driving speed.
Hi everyone, I'm finally posting a new video:) Enjoy watching it.
Видео класс! Спасибо!
Благодарю!:)
Good picture for the belt at 0:59
NO BELTS in Toyota's hybrids. They do have a CVT, but it's totally different. A planetary gear set does the job.
I have one . When starting on a hill you have to have your hand brake up before you move off or it will roll back
CVT Transmission is like an ATM Machine 😂
Is this considered 1 or 2 gear vehicle
Сейчас посмотрю.
Please make video about differential
From WC, I have 5 sp manual in my Ford Ranger, great transmission, but almost no one but me and one daughter can drive it!
It is priceless work. I would like to appreciate you. By the way, ı am sketching simple projects in sharp 3d, and ı would take pleasure in helping you for these kind of projects for free if you want. Also, ı just want to say thank you again for video.
infininite variable transmission??
good job guys ❤
Can you please make a video on manual transmission systems ?
Soon our video course will be released and there will be a video about manual transmission. Unfortunately, we will not put this video on the channel in the near future:(
Great video!! My question now is, if they(mfgs) can do this for a 3000lb car, why don't utv or atv mfgs do this for their off road products?? Polaris only just started the metal drive belt, but why is there no low gear that automaticly shifts into a high range like Toyota does?? Umm so many questions. 🤔🤔🤔
Invented in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 bij DAF.
Like video best
any trucks use this transmission??? does heavy truck use bigger CVT??
i have a question: i've heard that most of the failures on cvt is on the belt, and the preventive action is to take care the transmission oil. based on what i learned that this is PUSH belt, and based on kzhead.info/sun/g7WBhrCAb5yMlnA/bejne.html, is the cause of the failure often that the moveable halves did not move simultaneously, causing the 2 rings of belts slips out and made the links (elements) fall off? i've always assumed that the belts break because they were overstressed by the pulley
🎉🎉😊
I LIKE IT !!!
How many miles to you get on the rubber band?
more videos pleeeeaaaasssseeee
I'd love to, but there's no way to release videos more often at the moment. Our video course will be released soon - there will be more of our videos there.
👍
Sir software name please
What happens to CVT when you abruptly stop the car? Will it damage the cvt?
Les voiture Toyota n'utilise plus cette technique qui est devenue ancienne. Maintenant on la E-cvt qui utilse des engrenages, elle plus fiable et l'effet moulinette a presque disparu.
Now I understand cvt before I change 4 cvt my Altima 😂
They are fekking awe full !
fuel system please 🙏🙏
2010 caliber. 267,000 kms. not one problem.
Does Honda's CVT have torque converter?
The belt changes diameter (that's not right, but you know what I mean.) That's how the torque is adjusted. It doesn't have to change gears to change gear ratios.
@@briankleinschmidt3664 the torque converter, it doesn't shift gears, do you know its role?
OLD technology: snowmobiles have used this same system for years and years
I'm not impressed at what's for sale out there these days for new vehicles. Turbos and CVT's, AWD/4WD systems, cylinder deactivation, VVT and poorly designed timing systems, low tension piston rings/oil burning, and complicated hybrid systems that are all maintenance nightmares. And if that's not bad enough, the electronic monitoring of your vehicle and how you drive in the name of "safety", the disabling of functions on your car unless you pay for a subscription (Toyota remote start) are becoming commonplace. You can keep it all.
That belt must cause issues over time. Of course, all transmissions take a beating.
Not knew Was used by Motobecane in 1950 then by DAF

Throttle body how to work in a car please video ❤
Yeah but if breaks done the cost if repairs is ridiculous not for me manual foe me
I have Subaru Legacy 2017 with a CVT transmission and it is great!
Until it fails and costs you $7000 and a 6 month backorder wait.
@@milfordcivic6755 I do have Audi a6 C6 and my gearbox failed and to get and repair the company asking 2500 pounds 😮 for new one 4200 😂
CVT is a naughty name.It has created lot of trouble for many drivers ! I would never buy a car with a CVT transmission.I prefer a manual transmission! There is a TCT and DSG automatic transmission more reliable. DSG is often found in VW products and TCT in others .
Invented in1879. Not new in any way. You wont see this in a big rig truck. Ok in a atv, because it is EZ to change the belt.
What? say that again....what does that mean..😅😮

Да, конечно.
Very simple and clever concept but not new. This concept has been in use in farming equipment for quite some time now. However the car makers do not have it perfected yet and I consider these in a car....junk. If you drive like your grandmother then you might be good for a while. However if you drive in a way that most consider normal then your CVT will not last. I would not own one.
Great explanation and intuitive video, but CVT's are just not feasible in my opinion. There is too much going on and too many computers involved; no wonder they fail so often. There is no way that this option is more efficient than a standard automatic transmission. Nonetheless, great vid!
I believe that belt wore out while I was watching the video.
Useless transmission in my opinion from 2024. Lexus really put this to an RX 450h, you going to the "Autobahn" in Hybrid Mode suddenly the engine rew to 4500 rpm outside is -5 (engine cold) and you going.... Gratulation these cars are not making 200 000 km.
Got 260,690 on my cvt

ปัญหาโลกแตก สายพานขาด 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why is cvt so complicated. Manual should of never died off.
It should be titled "How doesn't it work"?????
Very unsuccessful
Interesting title: how the CVT works. They don’t. Well, not for long.
Simple without watching this vid……It does not work. P.O.S. $ for the manufacture ,cheap to build ,impossible to repair ,$$$ to replace. Junk. Dumb idea.
don't waste your money on cvt transmission cars. cvt cars are like scooter.
All EVERYONE needs to know is that it is PURE JUNK!!!...🤷♂
All you need to know is that IT DOSE NOT WORK
