Sony G 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 - Long Term Lens Review

This is a video about the Sony G 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 OSS lens. It’s a massive lens that is the longest zooming telephoto lens that sony currently has in their full frame lineup. In this video I am going being reviewing the lens after I have used it for the last few months and I’ll talk about the build quality, autofocusing, image quality and really just all about the lens. Ans close off with comparing it to the other similar options in the sony lineup. It is perfect for cameras like the sony a7riv, a7riii, a7iii or even the APSc cameras like the a6000 up to the a6600, though the lens is functionally a 300-900 on them which is a lil' bit crazy!
Thank you for watching the video, if you enjoyed it please consider subscribing and liking the video, it helps a tonne. I hope you have and awesome day!

  • I coupled the Sony 200-600 with the 2x teleconverter so I could capture the annular eclipse (ring eclipse,) in Taiwan, this past spring. It worked amazingly well. I almost have no other use for this lens, here in Taiwan, because there are very few places where a super-zoom lens comes in handy, but I have found uses. I've used this lens to capture a nesting pair of doves and their eggs out on my balcony. I'd set up my camera just inside the door to my balcony and they were nested just outside the minimum focus range. Other things I've used this lens for, I take pictures of the people on the streets below my 4th floor apartment. At night, by street light, I can almost clearly capture the people sitting outside the restaurant about 200 meters away. The photos are clear enough that I can read the big print on the labels of their beer bottles and I can catch the glow of the cherry on a lit cigarette. Also, I've taken some unique "macro" photos of spiders when trying to get a real macro photo was out of the question. Tropical spiders can be a bit scary if you try to get too close and a super-zoom eliminates the need to get close.

  • Hi, just found your channel and subscribed. Really enjoyed your review of the 200-600, I think your the first and only reviewer that described how to really use the lens, that is, use the 200 to spot your target and then zoom in - seems simple, but something that isn't always obvious. Also, given the design of the zoom ring mechanism, a quick quarter turn zooms all the way to 600, which makes the above use and description of spotting and zooming even more helpful. Also, appreciate your honest thoughts in regards to who this lens is for, again, it seems intuitive and obvious a lens of this type is for wildlife, sports type of shots...but reminding viewers of this is always welcomed and in my mind only goes to show how honest and credible you are when talking about a lens of this size. Thanks again...and look forward to checking out all your other videos.

  • great video. sigma 150-600mm sport has come since that video. very interesting to see you used peak design on foot and on side of the lens and attach t your neck; i was wondering if possible. which bag do you use ? I'd like to start bird photography with a7rv. I am very afraid about weight and size of 200-600. Do you think that sony 100-400 allows to walk in forest and zoo and take good pictures ? does 100-400 external zoom has same problems for dust and water than old sigma ? do you think using a 1.5 crop on a7rv with 21Mpx would make a good 600mm from a 100-400mm without using a TC 1.4x ?

I'm still on the fence about getting this considering I have the 70-200 as my longest lens but haven't been able to make the decision to get an upgraded body (a9,a7r4), this 200-600, a 100-400, or a teleconverter with an a7r2 and a7iii body. Do you think the first upgrade for birding/wildlife would be with this lens or other options first?

    @neokwlx@neokwlx3 жыл бұрын
    • No problem, thank you for watching! the situation you're in sounds exactly like the same one I was in when I was purchasing this lens, realistically you can't really go wrong with getting a lens and then If you find the camera body you're using is limiting, getting a new camera body down the road. The lens isn't going to be updated anytime soon but the camera bodies will be replaced almost yearly by a newer version. no matter which way you cut it though it's still a tough choice, the a7riv is a dope camera

      @ShaneBethlehem@ShaneBethlehem3 жыл бұрын
    • First upgrade should be your body, to the a9 if you want to pair the 200-600 seriously. I'd sell the R2 and 7iii to fund your build. Then buy a 1.4x tc, have the 70-200gm, 200-600mm and a A9 and call it done.

  • Great Vid showing both sides of buying such a long telephoto lens. I had the Sigma 100-400 and for the price the image quality is Stella but I am still getting the Sony as that extra 200mm for Wildlife Birds is very necessary. There are also no plans for Sigma to make a teleconverter for it..I got this info from Sigma. One other major point is the internal zoom on the sony doesnt pump dust onto your sensor like the 100-400mm by either manufacturers. Regards Stay safe.

    • I have no personal experience with using the teleconverter yet but I've heard mixed things about it, the biggest thing is you do give up a bit of sharpness when at 600 millimeters while using the teleconverter on the 100-400 and that the autofocus performance isn't as consistent as it is on the 200-600. overall though you're getting a way more versatile kit when using the teleconverter with the 100-400 which is smaller and lighter. personally if I didn't already need to have a 70- 200mm lens in my kit I would have opted for getting a 100-400mm lens And have tried the teleconverter, but it entirely depends on what your needs are.

  • Nice review. For a hybrid shooting with video as the primary use, what do you think of 200-600 with the new A7S III?

    @eraheem@eraheem3 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you, that's a good question that I don't quite have the answer to, I'm sure that the 200-600 will perform well and it certainly sharp enough to resolve for 4K, but how the stabilisation and the improved rolling shutter effects the video output will be entirely dependant on how good the camera actually is, regardless I'm excited to try them out together

      @ShaneBethlehem@ShaneBethlehem3 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for your thoughts. I also thought about 100-400 instead thinking of the stability issue with the longer lens. Perhaps for nature documentary the 100-400 GM would be a better one.

      @eraheem@eraheem3 жыл бұрын
  • After almost a year of use, my only big gripe is the A7R IV autofocus performance using tracking, and how much dust has ended up past the first element. I since have gotten a filter which helped. Other than that for 2000 bucks it's gotten me plenty of great shots and has good handling. It works great with the A9 for sports, but unless they are close you will have busy backgrounds at 6.3, so it's more or less useful for upper body shots and not much else

    @jimmyqballs@jimmyqballs3 жыл бұрын
    • Oh that is a pain with the dust, I haven't encountered any yet but I have also been in rather cold/humid environments mainly here in Canada too which probably has sheltered me a bit from dust. I would love to try the lens on an a9 some day, the a7rii I don't think does the AF system in the lens justice. Thank you very much for taking your time with this comment, I hope you have an awesome day!

    @bc5474@bc54743 жыл бұрын
    • I think this lens would do fantastic for rodeo shooting, I'm not sure how large of a space are in though so it might just be a little too long at 200mm would be my only concern. I find a lot of photos for mountains though also benefit from a focal length smaller than 200mm at least for my personal preference however you definitely can get some really nice photos with this lens with some interesting perspectives

  • After seeing your review and some others, I picked up this lens last month. I am currently limited to birds at my backyard feeder and am impressed with its reach over the 70-200 which is also a great lens. I have the A73 body amd deffered the upgrade to A74. I am now considering an appropriate ball head considering the heft of the lens. I am not too keen on a gimbal. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. BTW, I too live in the GTA in Mississauga!

    • I would actually steer clear of a ball head with this lens, I have had poor experiences with them and actually preferred using a fluid head when I could. The big con with that strategy is that it is so hard to carry a hefty video fluid head around, so I've been trying out a very niche solution: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08RJ9FXZJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'm still working on reviewing it but I have enjoyed it so far for long hikes as its much more granular in its controls, but it suffers also because its friction based rather than being spring loaded like a fluid head normally is, and you also need a tripod with a bowl head to level it. If you do go the route of a ball head I would just aim for a larger sized one as you'll have more control. Ultimately, I am still working on deciding what I think is the best solution too 😅

This for me makes it a more versatile lens when on a nature walk I.e. Ok for birds (especially with the 1.4 TC) and also great for butterflies and insects.

  • so i have a7r3, and i was considering the 150-600 from sigma to use with my mc-11 for a while, but i think im going to go with the 200-600 instead based on the fact that sony + sony works better, and internal zoom + weather sealing. i also have considered the sigma fe 100-400, but what detracts me from that is less reach in the extreme, and i have a sigma art 135 1.8 which has such good image quality, it fulfills the around 100-200mm focal length i wouldnt have going with the 200-600. and the sony i believe will hold value better and longer.

    @ggreyshade@ggreyshade3 жыл бұрын
    • When I got started with the A7R3 used the MC-11 For quite a while as well, after I moved over to native Sony lenses I was impressed by the huge increase in performance. it's a tough call because the difference between 400/600mm is pretty big, but the size difference between the two lenses is also extremely significant. for myself a smaller lens would be nicer just to be able to have something to take with me more often because the size would be less inhibitive, however, I did end up going with the 200-600.

    @AliKazi@AliKazi3 жыл бұрын
    • This lens would be great for shooting video of sports if you have a solid tripod with a tripod head that is relatively smooth like a gimbal head or a fluid head. It also depends on the sport you're shooting, for sports like football, baseball or cricket this would work great, but for indoor sports or more fast-paced close quarters sports this would be hard to use because it's just a little too zoomed in still at 200

    @magnum4623@magnum46233 жыл бұрын
    • Go for either the 70-200mm f4 G lens or the 70-350mm f4.5-6.3 G lens. Both are excellent lenses on aps-c. The 70-200 would also be useful on full frame if you ever upgrade, will be better in more challenging light, and slightly better bokeh. The 70-350mm is not as good in lower light and has a stiffer zoom ring, but has the much better range and is lighter and cheaper. I own both and if I had to give one up I don't know which one I'd sell as they both serve a purpose for me. Both are excellent lenses in terms of sharpness and optical quality.

    @BucNasty32@BucNasty323 жыл бұрын
    • That is fair, the compression can get really unique perspectives otherwise impossible to get. with other focal lengths. Though personally for landscapes I find the practicality of a telephoto lens tapers off at >400mm, atmosphere becomes far to much of an issue with image quality (I touch on this at 6:30 ish in the video) I feel a 70-200 or 100-400 makes more sense for landscape photos rather than the class of lens this is in. That's just my opinion though for if I am recommending lenses to people, if this lens works for you that's sweet!

I sent my entire team to sony Spain on 3 occasions and they told me Everything is ok. Even now I sold the sony 200-600 and bought another new 200-600 and it always fails in bursts. .I think that this camera and this lens are never compatible in burst photos with moving objects and animals. My approximate configuration is: ISO 800 speed 1/1600 or more f10 always because in f6.3 the static or moving photos come out very little sharp I don't know why central focus with tracking which is the last option on the menu. 60mpx extra sharp +5

  • Would the 200-600 work in a stadium at night?

    @1946gsp@1946gsp3 жыл бұрын
    • It certainly can, but it's not the easiest environment for any lens as your subjects tend to be moving rather quickly you'll need to us an elevated shutter speed which will also require a higher ISO to compensate. Personally I haven't taken my lens to any sporting events so I can't speak from personal experience but I know other people have used this lens with success. So ultimately yes, it's a good option, and the only lenses better in this class are like 10k so they aren't really at all in the same class 😅
