Search and rescue helicopter mission to Greenland's ice sheet! (This was incredible)

In this video we board the Airbus H225 SAR (search and rescue) helicopter operated by Air Greenland on behalf of Denmark's Joint Arctic Command. They take us up on a training mission so that we can see the helicopter in action and see what it's like to work the hoist and pick up an injured person from the snowy wilderness of Greenland, on top of the famous Navigator's Rock at the edge of the ice sheet. What an incredible experience. Part of our Greenland series, filmed in September 2021.

  • I worked as a field exploration geologist in Greenland for 2 field seasons (2013 and 2014) on the Nuusuaq peninsula and around the island of Uummannaq. I have to say that I have never met such awesome pilots as those that work for Air Greenland! Got us in and out of some really tight spots.

    • Yep, you'll have noticed one of the pilots was Swedish. The helicopter pilots in Greenland come from all over - in fact the Danish ones seemed to be in the minority (as opposed to the fixed wing pilots where many are from Denmark).

    • For instance my dad had travelled multiplie times with LN-OJF that was the helicopter involved in the Turøy accident. In 2016. After that there has been no 225 in Norway in use for offshore trafic.
