This post-Thanksgiving weekend, we bring you Rishi Chandna’s story of a family terrorized by their pet rooster. But “Tungrus and the Chicken From Hell” is more than the simple tale of a pampered and unruly chicken; it’s a parable about a man reenacting memories of his village upbringing in the middle-class context of a Mumbai apartment - and the wry patience his family uses to cope.

You can't be surprised by the ending. He said in the beginning he got the chick as a TOY for his cats... Not really the kinda guy you should expect a happy ending from...
QuarterAged Millennial facts
Yeah I had already found it disturbing when he said that. You can also see by the way he chases it around he doesn't see it as a friend or equal, but just as the phantom reminder of a childhood lost.
@@AishawithanEye exactly... it was simply a nostalgic trip for him. his sons even said he grew up in the village.
He is just being Zen about it. The rooster probably had some great past lives, which is why it’s life as an ordinary rooster who is caged for life until he gets killed to be eaten, became an extraordinary one with so much fun and frolic. But all good things must come to an end. Every life, no matter how grandly lived, must end. It it would be a happy ending too, filling the stomach of the person who gave you enjoyment of life.. instead of some strangers stomach.
QuarterAged Millennial Yeah he’s definitely a game player
The fact that the New York Times did a whole mini documentary on a chicken is kind of fascinating.
Speaks a lot for the state of journalism in the US lol
An interesting one mind you.
@@mahoney8001 It was a documentary on the complex phenomenon that one person's pampered pet can be another person's (or the same person's in this case) dinner. Much higher quality material than most articles I read.

By having bought your female chickens you have paid for their young brothers to be butchered, because there is ”no use” for as many roosters as hens. Don’t act like you are innocent and have no part in such thing when it was done with your support and money. Demand and supply, unless your chickens were rescues that you didn’t pay for in which case my apologies for assuming otherwise because it’s not the majority.

I have 2 roosters at my home I love them a alot . I bought them when they were small chicken babies. They are affectionate towards me. Some times I feel like they are my best frnd to whom I can share my thoughts. Me and my rooster sit on the terrace some evening's and have great time watching the sunset and cool breeze . They become very important part in my life and also to my family members. Every member of our family would love to pet them both. Hope that they have long and happy life ❤ it's been two years since they are living in my house.
He is not the only one who kept chicken as a pet, many people do that. Even i had two chickens when I was 12 but I didn't eat them or killed them. I raised those chickens as my kids and buried them when they died. Infact those chickens changed my life and made me VEGETARIAN.
In 1962, when my pet chicken was killed by a predator, I instantly became a vegetarian--and I've been a vegan since 1975. Animals are our friends, not food.
This is so sweet!! Are you based in Hyderabad?!! 😇
Thanks for appreciating. I'm from Bihar actually.
I have raised two chicken for almost 6 months, I didn’t considered them to be eaten yet i love them so much, i was aware that they have an affection to me as they keep running inside my house to look for me. But I didn’t allowed them bc they poooping everytime, Just recently last month they died and i missed them so much :(
I am having a pet rooster in my house now. Someone dumped him after breaking his leg, when he was a week old chick, and now he is 9months old. I didn't know roosters can be this intelligent and show their love towards us. I am in love with him and he is my baby❤.Any suggestions how to raise him healthy and happy.
"He must be a counterfeit rooster...he just crows whenever he feels like it" omg LOL
I mean the rooster had a good life while alive but he was betrayed by false love! If you can't trust your parent than who can you trust?
False love? Lol, he was being pretty up front about when he bought the chick it was just as a toy for his cats, lol. The chick was just a tough "streetcat" that managed to survive. He didn't get love, thats exactly why he was aggressive like shown in the video. He was just surviving in a toxic environment that was meant for him to die.

LOL they never loved him in the first place.
Weird family, but what a wonderfully told story dear editing/ camera team. That was perfect!
i have a pet rooster named pepe. i got him as a birthday present when he was 1 day old from my mum because she has a friend who is a farmer. i didn't actually expect her to get me a chicken for my birthday, i kind of was just joking with her so when she turned up with a box and i opened it to find a small baby chick inside i was very surprised. my dad wasn't very keen on the idea and was against it at first but eventually i got to keep the chick. since he was a baby he lived in my room in a box while i saved up a lot of money so i could buy him a nice chicken coop when he got older. when he started to get bigger he managed to get out of the box so every morning he would fly over onto my bed and sleep on me lol. i managed to buy a chicken coop for him and he started to live outside but he would always come inside for a visit and was very loving. i really hoped that he would turn out to be a hen because i lived in a suburban area and was worried if he turned out to be a rooster someone would complain and i would have to get rid of him. eventually i found out he was a rooster when he started crowing, so i decided to get a hen for him and named her tilly. they loved each other very much and would always be together it was very cute. my dad started to get fed up with them though and he wanted me to get rid of them both but i couldn't so i left to live with my mum and with pepe and tilly. they had a bigger property to roam around in and a big chicken enclosure with their own shed. unfortunately tilly passed away a while ago and pepe is still upset, he is about 2 years old now and i love him so much. he loves to sit on your lap or be picked up and cuddled, he will follow you around and when you call his name he will run over and he loves to do a little dance around your feet when he greets you. i have a lot of other hens now and pepe has a nice flock to keep himself company but he still loves to come down to my house with the hens to visit and spend time with us. he has never once attacked me or anyone else he is so friendly i never knew a rooster could be so kind and loving, i will always pick a chicken over a cat or dog

I loved this vid 😂😂
Idk, I was pretty entertained
This is a brilliant piece. There is a lot in this. The irony that the man who brought him home and who arguably seems to have the most affection for the animal is the one who takes him to be slaughtered. It is a pet, and it is treated better than nearly all other roosters on the planet, yet in the end, he can't escape his fate. And while the father is the one who brings the chick home, the mother is the one left to care for and clean up after it. And yet he is the one who unilaterally decides to have it killed; in the end, his wife also can't escape her fate.
You’re so right Steve-I keep coming back to this video and all I can see are the resentments and circumstances of the people the rooster has affected. The rooster seems to act as a mechanism of control that the father reveres as he storms through the house, leaving a mess in his wake that effects everyone involved. Really masterful documentary.

Omar Seal No kidding!!! Wtf?!!
I dont think the owner ever loved him. He bought him as a toy for his cats. Sickening
Nikki Ette Well I blame the family for it. I mean come on! Roosters are animals that are meant to be in places with wide open spaces to run like the countryside and they definitely need some companions. That rooster was probably frustrated due to the lack of space that he had. It was almost like living in a prison.
@@spino-tinodon1146 I agree but you went way too far. Think about the money you would spend for those open lands and think about the roosters. If they are free it is possible for them to fight. Private lands for the roosters themselves is a solution but it costs way too much! If you spend way too much, you dont have money to feed your animals and family.

Really? How many times you eat Chicken wings in a week?
The way it was slaughtered is the halal(islamic) way of slaughtering animals. Read up on it, it's quick and the most humane way there is. The setting was maybe a bit unsettling and unhygienic to some extent tho. I know this coz I live in India too. Show BOBS
@@tawreck4472 It's generally considered the CO2 method is more humane.
Sanjog Wayne like, zero
@@tawreck4472 The traditional Islamic of Halal is to let the animal be conscious when a small slit is made on its throat & the animal & even bird is let to bleed to its death. Quite often the animal struggles to stand & makes pathetic sounds till the blood loss makes it weak. It takes anywhere between a couple of minutes to even over 20 minutes for the animal to die. Is this humane?? The reason your chicken is like that is because he is not tamed or maybe he just wants more love and affection so your chicken will trust you

The smiles just disappeared with the Halal way of butchering rather than one quick cut . In Halal a small cut is made on the the neck & the animal/ bird left to bleed to their death. The butcher makes a cut leaves the Rooster in the drum & the drum shakes-- thats the last minutes of suffering. Animals birds many a times remain alive for over 20 minutest tho blood loss makes them too weak too move.

Everything about this rooster is perfectly normal. Roosters especially but , chickens in general are dominant and scrappy. They have their own pecking order and everything else is expected to find its place in their as well. They also will eat anything, cannibalism is nothing to them. Cooked chicken is just meat to them but they will eat their own dead sometimes as well.

@@j.s.2281 I'm going to rewatch the entire thing again because seriously wtf is this
I watched this while my 2-month-old rooster Iggy was sleeping on my chest. My heart dropped at the end. No matter how annoying he gets when he's older I could never do that. I put his egg in the incubator at day zero, turned his egg (and eleven others) every day, and watched him hatch. The other eleven didn't (the incubator was so old it had such fluctuating temperatures - had to stay up most nights regulating the temperature on my own). I have a bit of his umbilical cord in a little box as well as his egg. He's honestly what's kept me sane during lockdown and I don't think I could handle anything bad happening to him. He sits with me while I'm doing my work, dust baths on fabrics (he is like a fabric expert by now, loves my duvet), growls at random things, snuggles up to me lying on his side with his legs stretched out and rests his head on my shoulder. He's an absolute goofball and never ceases to make me and my family laugh.
I laughed my head off! I’m not sure which was funnier, listening to the family members talk about the rooster or the Rooster! So funny! 😂😂
The genre is comedy quickly turned into a horrible horror and terror 😱
The part with the dad petting the rooster and rooster had his head on his arm was adorable. The ending not so much though it is what it is.
Chickens and roosters are awesome tick and insect control. Keeping them as pets isn't as easy as dogs or cats sadly, but the thing is thousands of years of breeding has led cats and dogs to be our best friends but not chickens. Chickens are good pets if you raise them properly

I think I will watch this again when I'm sad 😂
My family had a pet chicken and it was our choice to get one. We lived in a house with a garden so he had more space. We loved him to distraction but the neighbors took him and ate him. We mourned like a family member had died. I couldn't eat chicken for ten years after that.
Your neighbours ate your pet chicken?! I would be beyond livid if that happened to a pet of mine.
I'd show them. I would eat their dog!
Wow. I don't blame you. BTW I like your thumbnail
Your neighbours had it good. .. A lovely freshly killed and prepared chicken AND got an extra few hours in bed the next morning. .. .cock-a-doodle-doooooo
And after the 10 years had past you guys had chicken once again?
I am sitting here in shock
Me too howcan he beso rude😭😭😭
Whole family is animal hater and cruel to this unlucky rooster. No body give him love but chasing and beating this little animal. They should never have any animals. These peopel are worst then animals😡😡😡
That chicken had a much better lifetime than most get to experience.
you can clearly see that even though he terrorized the whole family, they still have grown affectionate of him. They don't want to see him around their home yet they don't want him neither dead nor eaten. Also, the poor kitties are just hilarious lol
Lol
By the chickens noises he was making when he had his throat slashed you can tell he couldn't believe what just happened.
I have two house roosters, brought in during -30F temps because of their huge fragile combs, and they simply stayed as part of the household. Roosters can be trained, some of them are extremely cuddly, even begging to snuggle. I hope people don’t get the wrong idea about roosters from this video, because most house-raised roosters are actually very friendly. They learn their names and can be taught basic commands like coming when called and staying off things. According to the owner the one in this video was treated as a disposable cat toy from the get-go, and after that merely tolerated, not worked with. The fact that he’s not a vicious rooster shows that he would have been a nice one if they’d put effort into training him. Sad ending, but it would have come sooner I suppose had they not taken him in as a baby.
What a cold hearted owner of a moster poor chicken
WTF! First, he anthropomorphizes the chicken then suddenly it's an just like other chickens? What a monster! :Xd Turns dark quick after the funny start!
DesiBookLover ikr so funny . The “friend “ is the only actual person who wants to eat him lol
I would say he didn't actually anthromorphize him that much. As the description box says, it's a reenactment of a village upbringing in a middle class milieu.
@@nelsonth He said that rooster has feelings that he can understand.
How many times a week you go to KFC?
@@sanjogh777 Never! I do cook a mean chicken curry though!
*The quality of a life is not defined by it's duration, but the enjoyment one held in it. Es tiempo por caldo de pollo!*
If someone happens to slit my throat and I'm dying a slow, agonizing death, I doubt that will be how I'll be feeling. Animals have feeling and a consiousness in their own right.
I don't understand why the sudden shift in language from one sentence to the other... Pero me gusta

he's mad that he's not in a yard around hens he's not an inside apt animal, he's calling for a mate
Absolutely
This is the kind of thing my grandpa would do
Guess gramps didn't go to the supermarket much.
I hope he leave soon if he is still around!🤢
That chicken had it coming 😂
This is one kind of documentary of its own. As a viewer, I couldnt understand whether the family members have affection to the rooster or were averse to it. Esp the father's reaction that "Mai toh khaaunga hi" is hilarious!! The sons are surely put off with the rooster...ha hah
