Meet Tungrus and His Pet Chicken From Hell | Op-Docs

This post-Thanksgiving weekend, we bring you Rishi Chandna’s story of a family terrorized by their pet rooster. But “Tungrus and the Chicken From Hell” is more than the simple tale of a pampered and unruly chicken; it’s a parable about a man reenacting memories of his village upbringing in the middle-class context of a Mumbai apartment - and the wry patience his family uses to cope.

    • He is just being Zen about it. The rooster probably had some great past lives, which is why it’s life as an ordinary rooster who is caged for life until he gets killed to be eaten, became an extraordinary one with so much fun and frolic. But all good things must come to an end. Every life, no matter how grandly lived, must end. It it would be a happy ending too, filling the stomach of the person who gave you enjoyment of life.. instead of some strangers stomach.

Don’t act like you are innocent and have no part in such thing when it was done with your support and money. Demand and supply, unless your chickens were rescues that you didn’t pay for in which case my apologies for assuming otherwise because it’s not the majority.

  • i have a pet rooster named pepe. i got him as a birthday present when he was 1 day old from my mum because she has a friend who is a farmer. i didn't actually expect her to get me a chicken for my birthday, i kind of was just joking with her so when she turned up with a box and i opened it to find a small baby chick inside i was very surprised. my dad wasn't very keen on the idea and was against it at first but eventually i got to keep the chick. since he was a baby he lived in my room in a box while i saved up a lot of money so i could buy him a nice chicken coop when he got older. when he started to get bigger he managed to get out of the box so every morning he would fly over onto my bed and sleep on me lol. i managed to buy a chicken coop for him and he started to live outside but he would always come inside for a visit and was very loving. i really hoped that he would turn out to be a hen because i lived in a suburban area and was worried if he turned out to be a rooster someone would complain and i would have to get rid of him. eventually i found out he was a rooster when he started crowing, so i decided to get a hen for him and named her tilly. they loved each other very much and would always be together it was very cute. my dad started to get fed up with them though and he wanted me to get rid of them both but i couldn't so i left to live with my mum and with pepe and tilly. they had a bigger property to roam around in and a big chicken enclosure with their own shed. unfortunately tilly passed away a while ago and pepe is still upset, he is about 2 years old now and i love him so much. he loves to sit on your lap or be picked up and cuddled, he will follow you around and when you call his name he will run over and he loves to do a little dance around your feet when he greets you. i have a lot of other hens now and pepe has a nice flock to keep himself company but he still loves to come down to my house with the hens to visit and spend time with us. he has never once attacked me or anyone else he is so friendly i never knew a rooster could be so kind and loving, i will always pick a chicken over a cat or dog

  • This is a brilliant piece. There is a lot in this. The irony that the man who brought him home and who arguably seems to have the most affection for the animal is the one who takes him to be slaughtered. It is a pet, and it is treated better than nearly all other roosters on the planet, yet in the end, he can't escape his fate. And while the father is the one who brings the chick home, the mother is the one left to care for and clean up after it. And yet he is the one who unilaterally decides to have it killed; in the end, his wife also can't escape her fate.

    @SteveSilverActor@SteveSilverActor2 жыл бұрын
    • You’re so right Steve-I keep coming back to this video and all I can see are the resentments and circumstances of the people the rooster has affected. The rooster seems to act as a mechanism of control that the father reveres as he storms through the house, leaving a mess in his wake that effects everyone involved. Really masterful documentary.

Roosters are animals that are meant to be in places with wide open spaces to run like the countryside and they definitely need some companions. That rooster was probably frustrated due to the lack of space that he had. It was almost like living in a prison.

  • I watched this while my 2-month-old rooster Iggy was sleeping on my chest. My heart dropped at the end. No matter how annoying he gets when he's older I could never do that. I put his egg in the incubator at day zero, turned his egg (and eleven others) every day, and watched him hatch. The other eleven didn't (the incubator was so old it had such fluctuating temperatures - had to stay up most nights regulating the temperature on my own). I have a bit of his umbilical cord in a little box as well as his egg. He's honestly what's kept me sane during lockdown and I don't think I could handle anything bad happening to him. He sits with me while I'm doing my work, dust baths on fabrics (he is like a fabric expert by now, loves my duvet), growls at random things, snuggles up to me lying on his side with his legs stretched out and rests his head on my shoulder. He's an absolute goofball and never ceases to make me and my family laugh.

  • Chickens and roosters are awesome tick and insect control. Keeping them as pets isn't as easy as dogs or cats sadly, but the thing is thousands of years of breeding has led cats and dogs to be our best friends but not chickens. Chickens are good pets if you raise them properly

  • My family had a pet chicken and it was our choice to get one. We lived in a house with a garden so he had more space. We loved him to distraction but the neighbors took him and ate him. We mourned like a family member had died. I couldn't eat chicken for ten years after that.

  • I have two house roosters, brought in during -30F temps because of their huge fragile combs, and they simply stayed as part of the household. Roosters can be trained, some of them are extremely cuddly, even begging to snuggle. I hope people don’t get the wrong idea about roosters from this video, because most house-raised roosters are actually very friendly. They learn their names and can be taught basic commands like coming when called and staying off things. According to the owner the one in this video was treated as a disposable cat toy from the get-go, and after that merely tolerated, not worked with. The fact that he’s not a vicious rooster shows that he would have been a nice one if they’d put effort into training him. Sad ending, but it would have come sooner I suppose had they not taken him in as a baby.
