For a very limited time, Sony is offering up to $900 off (including trade-in bonus) on the A7RV - which shares the same processor and sensor of the A7CR. For the same price, you are getting way more value including dual card slots, much better EVF/LCD, and 4-axis real screen.

    • 40% lighter? Maybe the spec you saw was without the battery. At most, it will be about 25% lighter. Still significant if that is important to you. But for me, there are simply too many compromises compared to the A7RV.

    • I owned both. The A7RV is hands down way better. The EVF alone is worth getting the big brother over the little sister. Needless to say, i kept the A7RV and sold the A7CR.

    • @@RandumbTech Definitely depends on if you want smaller and lighter or the extras on the A7RV. I am probably going to rent both to decide. And I decided to do some math on this and it made me remember why percentages can be easily confusing. So if we’re talking about percent change, the A7RV is about 40% increase in weight over the A7CR. But that means if you go the opposite way, the A7CR is about a 29% decrease in weight from the A7RV (rounding for both obviously). But the percent difference in the two weights is about 33.6%. Also for reference, the A7RV is 723g and A7CR is 515g (both with battery and memory card from Sony’s site). As a quick math check with rounding, 515 * 1.4 is a bit under 723g and 723*.71 is a bit under 515. Percent change is relative to the original value which is why percent difference might be more useful when talking about this.

Plus it's on sale right now (with trade-in) for $3k. I love the idea of the ZV-E1, but it has too many compromises, especially not being able to control exposure with 3 dials. The A7iv is still a great camera, but once you experience to the 4-axis screen, it's soooooo hard to go back. Good luck!!

    @trivacker@trivacker28 күн бұрын
    • I haven't used the A7CR, but I do own the A7Cii. The stabilization performance between the A7Cii and A7RV is identical in real world situations. They are both great for stills and video. For video, I leave it in "standard" stabilization and then add more in post if necessary. I've found the "active" mode only works if I'm trying to get a tripod-like shot, be even in those situations, standard is usually enough.

    @jeansebastientlebreton@jeansebastientlebreton3 ай бұрын
    • Wow - that is a tough decision! The A7RV might be the goldilocks since the GFX system is so big/heavy and the A7CR is so compromised. To get the best out of the 61MP sensor, you need to use the best lenses which are traditionally larger. Those larger lenses on the A7CR makes them unwieldy. If you don't plan on using the high end glass, then perhaps the A7Cii might be a better option since it's less expensive.

    @andreaskaphengst8121@andreaskaphengst81217 ай бұрын
    • The Q3 comes with a ~$4,000 lens attached to it so there's that. I would also argue that the screen on the Q3 is better suited to photography than the flippy screen found on the A7CR. If the A7CR came with the same 4-axis screen as the A7RV and similar upgraded EVF, then it might be worth what they are asking. At $3k, I just don't see the value (especially when you can buy the A7RV for same price when on sale). Maybe I'll change my mind when I get my hands on it, but I doubt it.

    • @@RandumbTech People pay to have a compact full frame camera! There’s a market for these cameras and I wasn’t comparing the Sony to the Leica. The fixed 28mm 1.7 lens is no doubt an excellent lens but it’s fixed! The Sony 24mm 1.4 GM lens is also a good lens coupled with a 61 megapixel camera and you have an excellent combo. The A7CR was just released so the prices have not dropped yet as opposed to the A7RV. The good thing is that Sony gives us clear choices wether it be for video (7s line), high resolution (7r line), sports and wildlife (A9ii, A1), compact (A7C/CR) or allrounder the A7iv.

  • This is a useful video and perhaps sensible advice for many people - thank you! (I subscribed - just 15 more to go now!). But it s not for everyone. I am planning to get the A7CR - here's why. I am not a professional photographer and don't aspire to be one: I don't do professional shoots (no need for 2 cards; if it dies, just a few pics from my phone will have to do... and I'll be sad for 10 minutes, and that's OK), I really shoot quickly and spontaneously, and significantly less than 1% of my keeper photos are shot on a tripod (meaning less need for perfect EVF or screen), but real need for high "R": and then in post, I can crop, and crop, and crop again - and "crop-compose" to my heart's content, and with this much res, I can crop down to 1/4 original "R" and still have a great result, even if I decide to print it large (not likely, although I do have a 30+ inch print on my office wall; there's only so much wall... ); finally, the biggest tipping point issue for me: A7CR is tiny and has all I want, and 85% of all I could ever want; yes, A7RV has more, and is possibly is a better $ deal, except... it's honking big and OH SO conspicuous, and having 85% of it in a slightly overpriced yet magically tiny body (that's almost as small as my ZV-E1) is all I need (well, "want"; nobody really NEEDS it, unless it's your livelihood/profession, in which case you need A7RV). So, I plan to get A7CR, and I think it's great that Sony has all these choices, and while it may be confusing, videos like yours help us think those choices through - so, thanks again! Enjoy your A7RV - it sounds like it's a perfect camera for you!

The A7CR is a great camera that packs loads of great tech, (61MP!, class leading auto focus, 7 stops of stabilization, 4k 30 video no crop), into a small package. As we are seeing, there are things better about the A7RV that some target audience groups can “do without”, and pay $900 less for, and feel better carrying around more often because of the size. This is a compelling product for many prosumers.

      @Cthames123@Cthames1234 ай бұрын
  • It’s a tough choice A7CR - slightly pithy viewfinder and low-res screen, but lightweight, user LUTs, the cinematic borders option thing, LIGHT and joyous to carry around. But no real mechanical shutter, unsure how it works with 3rd party flashes. 7 stops ibis with OSS lenses. A7RV - heavier bit of gear but mechanical shutter which is based if you use SONY lenses. 3rd party lenses don’t seem able to mitigate it well even with active ibis (at least that was the case on a7iv). 8(!) stops of stabilization, much better screen and viewfinder. ISO isn’t flawless, but with A7CR’s 7 stop IBIS and A7RV’s 8, in many cases you can negate that with lower shutter speeds. I think the A7CR is miraculous for carrying around all day. At the same time if you’re more of a tripod shooter, or want to experiment with more handheld artistic blur of moving subjects and without shaky framing, I think the A7RV is unbeatable at this point in time. Likely works better with flashes too. On A7iv I felt shooting stills with mechanical often gave environments depth and nuance that electronic lacked. But if not using SONY OSS lenses, the shutter shock is usually fatal! SONY RV, mechanical shutter mode + active IBIS + an OSS GM lens is one of the most pro setups out there and you will get shot literally no other camera could. Both have gyro data, so you can turn off ibis and shoot higher frame rates to get smooth footage, but I think RV’s 8 stops Active is a better choice as shooting 24fps 1/50 or 30fps 1/60 makes movement more natural than say gyro 30fps 1/120 - which looks so smooth but a little unnatural. Both great cameras, RV deserves user LUTs and framing firmware update tho SONY, get on it! I think given the lightness, the A7CR is probably the best if you never want to miss a shot. With the extra weight of the RV, the pull on your neck will probably lead you to put it in a bag more often than not. I’ve found with Fuji’s smol models and A7C, I barely felt the thing so i always had it close to hand. Also, just a little more discrete if you’re respectfully doing a bit of street photography. Also for selfie vlogging, that lightness on the A7CR is going to be pretty unbeatable, but you may have to Ninja Walk a little more than if you were using the A7RV as I think that 8th stop may be a bit of a gamechanger. Again both AMAZING hybrid cameras just with different +s and -s.

    • @@RandumbTechI hope it goes on sale…I’d buy it If I have the money at the time. I will say, I’m way to late to the party to take advantage of the sale you mentioned that Sony was offering on the A7RV, ($1000 off with a lens trade in), but if some goofy way I could get the A7RV at the same price as the A7CR I’d likely go with the A7RV.

  • Can I trade in a Canon. Asking for a friend.

    • Not sure if the promotion is still going on, but when it is, you can absolutely trade in a Canon. I actually ended up buying an A7Cii and have been quite smitten with it. I still stand by my argument against the A7CR though - it's too expensive for what it is. If it ever goes on sale for $2,500, it would be a much better value.

  • No the JUMP from a7iii to a7iv $500 dollar price increase was NOT justified. Even though the a7iv had better mega pixels-33- vs 24, the later camera had and still does have serious overheating problems according to many reviews. For that reason alone, that camera does not fit pro requirements as far as I'm concerned. 😎😎

    • I've shot with my A7iv for extended periods in some pretty serious heat in 4K/60 and never had any issues with overheating. Perhaps it's because I was outside and there was some airflow. The A7iv is best for hybrid use, not just video. If I know I'm going to be doing lots of video, I just grab the FX3.

    • @@RandumbTech Yeah, the FX3 is great, but do not have one. Am hoping that the Sony a7Siv model & the FX4 will be released soon. There were rumors but like lots of Sony stuff, rumors fall by the wayside. Now that they did finally release a $25 G camera that has IBIS and Internal ND's, I have a difficult time making up my mind what to do. Ha, Ha, hope u didn't believe that last line. Am a "Starving Artist" even though I went to CalArts & a few other places years ago. Dark Ages. 😎😎

  • A7R5 is awesome! Still can't believe Sony put a 1M dot screen and crappy viewfinder on A7CR..I would have been in on that camera had they done so

    @hasenmyer@hasenmyer8 ай бұрын
    • The A7R5 really is a great camera. I'd be OK with the lower res EVF and LCD in the A7CR, but only at a lower price point. Perhaps they will go on sale like the A7RV - at that point it would be a much better value.

    • @@RandumbTech They could have at least put the 2M dot screen on it. Heck XS20 as 3.5M and it's 1200.00. They really cheaped out on the build and then charged maximum. A7CR as is should cost 2500-2700

    • I don't think it sucks, but it is overpriced for what it is. Had they given us the 4-axis screen and better EVF, I would have been tempted to buy it. At the current price, there is no way I'd buy it.
