This video you will see a comparison between two Anti Tank Missile Systems. One is NLAW anti tank Weapon system and another one is Javelin anti tank missile system .
Javelin is made by United States and
NLAW is made by United Kingdom and Sweden

The video mentions the NLAW takes about 5 seconds to put into use; what it doesn't mention is the Javelin takes at least 30 sec for the IR intensifier tube to warm up for tracking targets, and as someone mentioned in a thread here, it takes about 90 sec to reload Javelin. So the Javelin is excellent in defense or when you have time to set up, but in a spot ambush or immediate action situation, the NLAW is rapid to put into action. I realize 30 sec doesn't sound like a long time but believe me, time seems to slow down when you're under fire and 30 sec can seem a lifetime. So each system has its good points. Bottom line is the NLAW is a LAW, the Javelin is a MAW. Along with HAWs, like TOW, Milan, HOT, Konkurs...such systems are meant to work together in an effective AT defense, not compete.

Except Javelin no other RPG is capable of destroying modern vehicle because they hit straight which could be easily parried by defense system but Javelin could hit from above like hypersonic one which deviate defense syste.
That's why it's good having them both on hand, the NLAW is good for ambushes and short range while the javelin is designed for medium range attacks!

The Javelin is more powerful in the warhead and range. The NLAW has the speed to fire and simplicity working for it. It's otherwise equally as effective taking out a tank. Both can do Top Attack, which is their main purpose. So NLAW is perfect for ambush and taking out tanks within 600 meters. Javelin needs some time to get going and fire but can hit hard and at longer ranges.. So they actually complement each other really well.
This system well put you in the range of a sniper .
The big thing for me watching this was range, if you’re fighting in a city that may be less important but if I’m taking out a tank (which probably has other tanks looking out for it) I want to be hella far away.

Price is a huge factor. NLAW is £40,000 and Javelin £130,000. For every Javelin, the Ukrainians could have 3 NLAWS. The soldiers in the field need proper instruction for the Javelin as it's quite complex, but has way more features than the NLAW and can be used to bring down helicopters. The Ukrainians like the NLAW because it's very simple to use. Anyone can be taught how to fire it in a few minutes much like the US LAWS, RPG or AT-4. They also like the fact that it's still guided. The missile does not update itself in flight like the Javelin, but if the operator tracks the moving target for at least 2 seconds, then predictive software will work out where the target is headed and then fires at that spot so that the missile flies directly above target and then detonates.

Yea the price is a big difference but so is the range and explosive charge. The javelin can operate outside a tanks range, with nlaws you have to get within a tanks range. If you watch the video from that convoy outside Kiev about five days ago, the other tanks immediately turned their guns and fired where the nlaw came from. Plus the javelin flight path obfuscates where the middle came from. Javalin brings more destruction to the game. Heard today CIA has been training Ukraine military/special ops since 2014 with javalins in eastern Ukraine

It depends on the situation I saw in the video in Ukraine it's a rapid response shot that destroyed a Russian tank NLAW is more effective but for long range columns and being outnumbered to avoid exposure to the enemy best choice is javelin so for long range best choice javelin for short range & rapid response best choice is NLAW

Thing is with an NLAW you can fire from pretty much anywhere. Perfect for Urban warfare taking out vehicles passing by or if you're hiding in a closed environment. NLAW also cost a fraction of the Javelin. Javelin as you've correctly pointed out is more powerful and has better range though. But i wouldn't fuck with somebody with an Nlaw haha
don't think the user would really mind which they have in a pinch. being further away from the enemy would definitely be an advantage giving more cover options but having a quicker spot shoot gtfo is also a nice thing!

The Brits have also sent the Starstreak HVM ground to air system. Fires multiple darts at +Mach 3 for use against helicopters and attack aircraft. The Ukrainians will have a missile for all occasions.

Well, the NLAW is a squad(10:ish soldiers) to platoon(30:ish) level weapon, the Javelin is a company(150:ish) to battalion(600:ish) level weapon, they are really not in the same niche. The NLAW is there to give AT-capacity to smaller units organically. Just like a squad can have m203 grenade lauchers but not howitzers. Any army should have both (or simillar, there are alternatives for the Javelin role, but I don't know of any real alternatives for the NLAW role).
The NLAW weighs only 12.5 kg (compared to the 22.3 kg of the Javelin), costs only $30k (compared to $200k for the Javelin) and can be fired from within buildings, trenches, etc.
NLAW doesn't have top attack capabilities but the Javelin has a confirm kill top attack ability and is a fire and forget system. Range wise the Javelin can be shot behind cover or in buildings making it extremely capable. NLAW is more of a close in anti tank weapon for troops to carry in larger numbers. NLAW will hit tanks on the front or sides. Usually it will not penetrate the front of the best MBTs but against the side armor, it will obliterate any tank in the world, even with ERA. Same goes for Russian anti tank systems like KORNET E which has top attack function. Tanks in the modern era really are like sitting ducks

Leaffordes over the TOP is not TOP Attack. TOP Attack means that the missile climbs really high over the target before slamming down with contact at a steep angle. These missiles cannot be intercepted by Russian dazzlers or Israeli Trophy active protection systems. The NLAW with the skimming over TOP Attack is completely interceptible by dazzlers and APS systems. If they have those anti ATGM systems. That is the difference
The javelin has alot of technology for it being old and is still impressive to this day. The infrared technology makes it able to dominate at night as well for those forces that go bang in the night.
But it also expose them. Anyone with good night vision equipment can see where the IR beam is coming from.

@@darkiee69 There is no IR beam. The Javelin uses IR heat from the target. That is why it needs a few minutes prep time to cool the IR SENSOR down by using the can of coolant.. The Javelin operator is exposed when he fires.....that produces a heat signature that enemy can identify.
NLAW is faster and lighter(12.5kg) although less powerful, Javelin is more powerful but heavier(22.3kg) and slower to use. Anti tank both are capable with the same warhead to roof function, but because less weight, cost and faster response NLAW wins. Longer range and against some small fortifications Javelin's better though.

I believe the UK use Javelins as primary AT weapons and NLAWs as secondary. Javelin have tandem HEAT warheads which do better against ERA bricks and also greater penetration. NLAW warheads form an EFP (like IEDs) which has less overall penetration of the Javelin but still effective against the top armour of MBTs. NLAW is a whole lot cheaper ($20k vs $70k) and whoever is carrying it can fire it. Whereas for Javelin you need to find the guy with a CLU (pun intended).
NLAW also has a soft launch that allow it to be fired from indoors/vehicles etc. Great for urban warfare. I suspect that if the Sov.. Russians ever try to roll armour into Kiev they'll get a shock when their armour gets taken out by NLAWs they never see being launched. Javelin is also technically "soft launch" but not to the same degree.
where does the Israeli-Singaporean MATADOR fall in ? seems much lighter, shorter range. focusing on urban warfare with soft launch and delay mode warhead
The weight is a misnomer since the guidance portion of the Javelin detaches after launch to be attached to the next missile tube.
Somehow that skipped over the most important facts like armour penetration, missile velocity, price per shot, attack modes and production numbers.
In essence both can take out any MBT.. They are top attack and both can easily penetrate deep enough for any armor on top of the tank. The "Javelin cages" don't work. And with NLAW it's a molten copper shape charge that detonates 1 meter above the tank. So no defense. I think it's tandem so a charge first blows the ERA protection and then the shape charge do the real work.
Cost per missile is of no essence. Have you not heard, they are giving them away now for free. :D

@@memkiii The west has so much money and resources they don't care. US aid has gone from like 450 million dollars to like 14 billion. Massive amount coming from Europe too, at least the same amount. Then all the donations by charity concerts, fundraising by charities etc. In the end it will probably end up being like 50 billion dollars which was the amount that the entire German military budget was before the since Germany now tripled their military spending.
Missed out a unique feature of the NLAW, it has a minimum range of just 20 meters. Ideal for in close situations.

Nlaw use a concussion blast over the target's top armor while the Javelin directly hits the target on the top armor.
Both have their uses. Javelin is best at long range against MBTs in open terrain. NLAW in forest and urban areas.

Another pro for the NLAW is that it doesnt use IR, which could give away your position trying to set up the shot.
I don't see much evidence of any Russian use of IR detection gear, or even IR goggles. Their tanks, which also lack any such detection equipment, don't even seem to have any proper march procedures. They aren't even scanning for targets. In any case what do you suppose they would be able to do about it in time? It's not as if the guy with the Javelin is sitting there for 5 minutes aiming at the tank before releasing. It's sort of a non issue anyway. Even an older generation RPG is useful against armour, even if it only takes a track off, or damages a sprocket. What they need is more of everything.
I don't believe the Javelin launcher emits any IR that would reveal your position. The seeker on the missile uses passive IR homing to track the target.
It has an IR receiver not an IR emitter. Javelin won't give away your position until you fire it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the angle of attack or trajectory from the missiles are different as well. The NLAW is almost linear, explodes right above the tank, hitting the weakest armor while the Javelin upon firing, rockets upward then dives to top of the tank. Having said that, would active protection like those installed in new Abrams and Armatas, negate the success NLAWS is having with older Soviet Era tanks?
Both and great and have own advantages over the other. NLAW is not a true fire and forget missile as it does not track a moving tank, it calculates where the moving tank will be when it reaches its target. Soldier can only shoot NLAW with a clear line of sight not through smoke or heavy fog. Javelin is a true fire and forget missile and it can be track a moving target with its IR seeker. Javelin has much longer range and more armor penetration power compared to NLAW. Its optic sight can also be used for recon when missile is not being fired or attached to optical sight. NLAW is cheaper and quicker to fire but you have to be very close to enemy tanks which means odds of person firing NLAW will be spotted and taken out before even firing missile or right after firing it even higher. Javelin can be fired from much longer range and solider firing can reposition before missile even hits target. Both are great to have an compliment each other very well. In any fight Javelin's and NLAW's are all you need to fight an ANTI TANK war.
Both systems have saved Ukrainian lives.
when the combat gets deeper into Kyiv, then the NLAW totally wins. The Javelin just causes fear to most Russian tanks because it’s more deadly at ranges and it can ignore the ERA packages with the Tandem warhead

Javelin is not effective in built up areas, as communication devices can confuse the missile. NLAW shorter range and Carl Gustav would be more effective in built up areas.

Javelins are like seek and destroy, tanks have no place to hide and it could be a good cover for nlaw ambush, since both are guaranteed hits , with javelin you are secured ….something like a sniper cover for infantry, when you make an ambush on a large column, you retreat on the sight of the javelins , the pursuing columns will meet their faith with the Javelins from a distance, and the nlaws will make a quick escape

NLAW best for Urban fighting & read (I believe) its easier to train n fire the system. Plus its great in urban fighting, firing in close spaces without much or little backblast. Russo armour wont wanna be involved in street fighting with squads of Ukrainiums armed with NLAWS amongst the ruins n rubble.

It appears to me to be more like a Russian RPG direct line of sight. But it's good to have a standoff capability like javelin.. you don't want to be shot by a Russian sniper or infantryman trying to kill a tank.

It is like people would choose different shoes or bags for different event - a soldier will do the same and take the NLAW for the casual urban fight and the Javelin for longer range open area combat and the pzF3 for short range urban fights against tanks and the AT4 for the common use! So every system has it features!

Not at artillery ranges. You'd need to patrol up to the gun line to get a shot at the arty, so you've got a choice of lugging the Javelin 2000m away or two NLAW 600m away.
I saw in another video that the NLAW is a single use weapon. Assuming the Javelin can be reloaded, it could be cheaper in the long run.

The pansarskott 86 that we swedes also sent are one use only. They are good for light armor, light fortifications and knocking the track of tanks etc. And it is extremely simple. Civilian militia can use it.
Some facts are not correct in the video, the weight for example. Another thing to compare is how the missile finds it target. The Rb-57 NLAW look for magnetic signatures while the Javelin flies high and look for thermal signatures. That means that the NLAW also finds "cold" targets.
They compliment each-other perfectly, one is a sniper rifle, the other is a shotgun.

Against a tank column in the distance Javelin would be preferred. But against troop carriers in urban areas NLAW is devastating.

The Javelin has its advantages(like range), but the HUGE thing that makes NLAW more useful is that is is capable of firing from more concealed places. The javelin has a back blast that will injure anyone behind or in a concealed area (like a bunker or inside a building). The NLAW however is fully capable of being launched from inside a concealed area - its initial back blast is small and the solid rocket doesn't ignite until it is at a safe distance. This make is a LOT more useful in urban fighting, close range and medium close range. Soldiers can keep hidden and fire from a safe cover much easier. The NLAW can also be fired directly at a downward angle, meaning a soldier can ambush from above a roof, as seen in some recent live war footage
Javelin has soft launch just like NLAW, it won't harm people inside the building. I still wouldn't stand behind either when fired.
The Javelin also has a direct fire feature for taking out walls, bunkers, or top down firing like from on top of a high rise building. I see Javelin as a open terrain anti tank weapon because of its +4000m range and NLAW/AT4 in Urban anti tank and troop carrier weapon because of its under 800m effective range.

You forgot to mention the very large difference in price! The Javelin is 3-4 times more expensive. So, the long range comes at a high price. Also Javelin is less portable.
NLAW was built for mobility Javelin was built for range and defensive situations
Missed out a few things. cost, NLAW is about 20k javelin 70k, javelin has a really good sight that is detachable and is very useful in its own right. So you get 3 NLAWs for 1 Javelin. Also firing angle NLAW can be fired down out of buildings at tanks but Javelins can't really be used like that. Javelins can also take out helicopters. NLAWs you would have to be a very good shot, because it is not guided. NLAW takes about 30secs to setup Javelins take a few minutes. NLAWs take 2-3 hours to learn to fire, Javelins is several days. Official course is 10 days So you need both. They do different jobs. Both are good at what they are designed to do.

Both have their purpose. Javelin is much better for open environments where range and night capability is important. NLAW is a much better pick for closer engagements (especially urban) where the enemy tank can be seen in daylight.

Add the cost effective Carl Gustaf with 11 different projectiles and the AT4 (CS) and the family of AT is complete. Open fields, suburbs, cities, long/short distance.
You forgot the prices difference. Nlaw is way cheaper. So you could use 5-10x more rockets. But both have their terrain where it is usefuller

They both have pro and cons. I think I would prefer the option of having more range or distance from someone that is trying to kill me.
If you're in a city or highly dense forest. The NLAW would be superior. Takes 5 seconds to fire can detonate within 20 meters. No cumbersome aiming with IR and the distance is much shorter in urban areas and dense forest.. The Javelin is better for longer range attacks.. So in reality having both is optimal, it covers any situation.
The Javelin is the most superlative anti tank/anti vehicle/anti helo weapon ever made. Make no mistake, I am no keyboard warrior!. I had the pleasure of using this weapon in training and war games many times.... It is a total game changer. The N-Law is great but the Javelin for its range, portability, accuracy and adaptability to any terrain is the benchmark for today's weapons and tomorrows. All future ATGMs that are being developed today are still benchmarked against the Javelin!
Without taking a price into the picture, Javelin is impressive. 4.5km of range without direct line-of-sight firing.
This doesn't mention that Saab partially developed the NLAW

@@mawdeeps7691 Indeed they have different functionality but if you look through NATO there is a plethora of different anti-tank weapons. Many countries are sending such weapons to Ukraine where resupply and training must be a nightmare.

You can really tell a tank hit by a javelin, it’s all blown up. I prefer having a 3000 meter range to fire & forget, then hide. Javelin is the perfect weapon to obliterate the 40 mile convoy to Kyiv.
Agree. But in cities such as Kiev where buildings, electrical wires etc may interfere with javelin guidance, NLAW is better. Also generally guidance from long distance not as important in close city combat. NLAW gear cheaper too

If they've got Javelin it's a mystery why that huge Russian column has been pretty much unmolested as it sits in a 40 odd mile queue prepping for it's attack.
Javelin is the only long range thing the Ukraines have outside of artillery which has to be dwindling fast. Nlaw is great, but the range is an RPG.
