German Alpine Road
Berchtesgaden - Lindau
Via Wierschem, where we walked the Traumpfad Eltzer Burgpanorama, we drove to Berchtesgaden.
In Berchtesgaden we started with the Almbachklamm, where we spent the night in the parking lot. After the walk through the Almbachklamm we spent the night at the camper place in Oberau. The camper place in Oberau was a nice spot, a bit uphill which gave a nice view over the valley. In the afternoon there was still time for a small MTB tour on the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse.
The next morning we got up early. We wanted the first 8:00 am boat across the Könisgssee to Germany's largest waterfall, the Röthbach waterfall.
Back at the camper we started the first stage of the #GermanAlpineRoad. We drove back north. Just before Inzell we turned towards Reit. In Ruhpolding, the tourist information said that it is called Little Canada here because of the 3 lakes area. She did warn that there is nothing else there, only nature. That seemed like something to us. A nice place to spend the night.
In Klein Canada we made a beautiful walk along the Lödensee, the Mittersee and the Weitsee.
We continued the German Alpine Road with the camper. We actually drove a little further out of the Alps. We even drove right along the A8 Rosenheim - Salzburg south of the Chiemsee. It is then nice to drive back to the Alps with the Wilder Kaiser in sight. We spent the night at a camper place at a farmer just in Niederaudorf.
We also drove up the small road past our camper place. The German Alpine Road went in that direction. We would first pass the Wasserfall Tatzelwurm. That was it. We didn't see him and didn't feel like looking for him. The plan was to take the Wendelstein Seilbahn and hike up there. The weather was not good and when we put on our hiking boots it started to rain. Not so.
We continued on the German Alpine Road and thus reached the Sylvenstein dam and the Sylvenstein-Stausee. We knew the road to Bad Tölz, so we decided to take the toll road along the Isar to Walchensee. This turned out to be a wonderful abbreviation. With a view of the Karwendel Mountains, the Isar flowed into a plain of stones. Here you could also imagine yourself in Canada.
We arrived at a very large camper place at the Walchsee. After a MTB trip we slept wonderfully here.
After cycling around the Walchensee we continued the Deutsche Alpenstrasse. We enjoyed the view of both the Karwendel Mountains and the Ammergäu Alps.
The Deutsche Alpenstrasse took us further to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Partnachklamm was open this year. And that also applied to the Kaiserschmarnnalm with the Kaiserschmarnnhut. The decimated Kaiserschmarnn were delicious again. The German Alpine Road took us further to Ettal. We visited the enormous monastery, the Benediktinerabtei Ettal, and drove on to a camper place at the campsite in Oberammergau.
In Oberammergau we hiked to the top of the Laber (1684 m). Afterwards
we followed the German Alpine Road further to Füssen. We passed Neuschwangau Castle. We already visited the fairytale-like Neuschwangau in 2006. We spent the night in a parking lot at the Hopfensee.
We cycled around the Hopfensee to Füssen and then around the Forggensee. From the Hopfensee we drove with the camper bus to Pfronten. At Pfronten we visited Burgruine Falkenstein, Germany's highest ruin. Via the 106 curves counting Oberjoch Pass we reached Bad Hindelang and found a camper place in Sonthofen.
From Sonthofen we drove to Oberstdorf. We hiked through the Breitachklamm. Then we drove on to the Kleinwalsertal. In Riezlern we found camping Haller to spend the night.
The first day in Riezlern we took the Kanzelwandbahn to make a nice mountain walk. The next day we cycled around the valley on the MTB.
After the MTB tour we left the Kleinwalsertal. At Sonthofen we continued the German Alpine Road. We found a camper place at the Kleine Alpsee near Immenstadt im Allgäu.
The last part of the German Alpine Road offered a nice view of the Alps. We drove to Lindau. The Scheidegg Wasserfall was unfortunately closed for maintenance work. In Lindau we visited the Altstadt. With that we concluded our journey on the German Alpine Road.
We drove back through the Eifel and walked the Traumpfad Waldsee and visited Bad Munstereifel.
