In this video, I conduct a detailed analysis of all the SAAMI certified 270 caliber cartridges.
While the United States is indeed a country where 30 caliber cartridges reign supreme, the 270 bore diameter can really give the 30 caliber a run for it’s money in terms of popularity. Indeed, the 270 could even be described as a uniquely American bore diameter and as you’ll learn here shortly, I’m aware of exactly 7 cartridges using a 270 bore diameter: all of which are of American origin.
In this episode, I hit the highlights of all of the 270 caliber SAAMI certified cartridges and discuss their history, legacy, their strengths and weaknesses, and their recommended uses in detail.

270 Winchester: South Texas whitetail deer taken by Marty Heaner using Hornady Precision Hunter ammunition shooting a 145gr ELD-X bullet at 175 yards. Bullet hit buck high on the shoulder and he dropped in his tracks.
270 Winchester: Eastern Canada Moose taken by Tom Fetherston. He used a Ruger M77 firing Winchester Expedition Big Game Long Range ammunition loaded with a 150gr AccuBond Long Range bullet. Bull was strongly “quartering to” him at the shot (range of ~300 yards), but the bullet punched straight through the shoulder blade and hit the heart/lungs. The bull then turned broadside and Tom shot again, hitting behind the shoulder. The bull then almost immediately dropped.
270 Weatherby Magnum: Oregon mule deer Jeff Riley took in 1995 with a Winchester Model 70 chambered in 270 Weatherby Magnum shooting a 140gr Speer Grand Slam bullet. Deer had a 34” spread!
270 Winchester Short Magnum: Minnesota whitetail taken by listener named Marla using Hornady Precision Hunter ammunition shooting a 145gr ELD-X.
270 Winchester Short Magnum: Idaho elk taken by listener (name withheld) using a Browning A-Bolt at 460 yards.
6.8 SPC: Montana whitetail deer taken by Grace Wridge shooting a SSA by Nosler factory load shooting 110gr AccuBond bullet from an AR-15 at 90 yards. Buck dropped in tracks.
6.8 SPC: Texas feral hog taken by Matt Pierce with ammunition from Hornady Custom line shooting 120gr SST bullet. Hog dropped in tracks from a frontal chest shot.
27 Nosler: East Texas feral hog (weighed 135 pounds on the hoof) I took with a Nosler M21 rifle sporting a Banish 30 suppressor shooting a load from Choice Ammunition with a 150gr AccuBond at 2,970fps. Hog dropped in tracks.
6.8 Western: West Texas free range aoudad taken by Layton Norwood with a Browning X-Bolt and shooting 175gr Sierra Tipped Game King from Browning Long Range Pro line. Layton made a great high shoulder shot at 350 yards and the aoudad dropped in its tracks!

Great video! Nice chronological history of these cartridges. I really like the .277 bore and have (2) 270 Winchesters, a 270 WSM and a 6.8 Western. I like all of them! No doubt the 6.8 Western is the heavy hitter of the three. I hope it gets better received going forward.

if there are better load options, rifles, and reloading equipment and options for brass and bullets. So little support from the industry or options for decent components and rifles other than the limited ones released initially
wont get received well until decent rifles ,loads , ammunition and reloading gear is supported by the industry.currently sub par frifles and ammunition and struggle to find stuff to be able to reload pathetic
Another entertaining and educational video. I’ve been shooting 270 Winchester for almost 51 of my 71 years. All in my 1974 Ruger 77R with the 22” barrel. Acquired several other rifles over the years in a wide variety of bullet diameters and cartridges but the 270 has been my usual go to rifle. Where I live in central Kansas on my farm I can have shots at 50 yards in creek bottom timber or 400 yards across a soybean field. I will not take a shot that far. I’m not that desperate. Mostly Whitetails, but occasionally we have few Mule Deer wander this far east. I have to go to western Kansas for Pronghorn and possibly Elk. In my reading over the years it was always said that the 130 grain 270 was slowed down because of complaints that it did a lot of meat damage even at longer ranges. I have never used the 130. Always the 150 at around 2850 fps with the medium charge of H4831 according to my favorite old Speer #9 manual. Consistently shoots under 1” at 100 yards. I only remember shooting a couple of deer at a little over 300 yards. Usually not over 200. Some years I got several deer, others none. We have big pastures with canyons in the Smoky Hills that you can shoot across but I never tried those kinds of shots. I tried to get closer. I just checked on ammo at Midway USA. They have 1 Winchester load in 6.8 Western, a few in 277 Fury, 2 in 270WSM, 1 Weatherby 270, 1 Nosler and 46 varieties of 270 Winchester available. Grafs has 2 in 6.8 Western, 7 in 6.8 Remington S.P.C., 1 270 WSM, 1 270 Weatherby, 48 270 Winchester. These I’ve listed are all available now, not out of stock, back ordered or coming soon. I’m surprised there weren’t more 270 WSM available as popular as it’s reported to be. For comparison Grafs has 37 varieties of 7mm Remington Magnum, Midway has 26 in 7 REM mag. Neither of my usual sources has 7 PRC ammunition. I have the newest Hornady, Nosler and Speer reloading manuals. Only the Nosler has data for the 27 Nosler. Imagine that!😂 None have data for 6.8 Western or 7 PRC. It appears to me that whether you hand load or strictly use factory ammunition AND you want to shoot something that is better (and that’s a matter of opinion) you might as well step up to good old 7mm Remington Magnum. From what I have read, it sounds like 7 PRC isn’t really that much better than 7 Rem Mag. I haven’t seen anything on paper with apples to apples comparison. Equal bullet weights in equal length barrels. I think the 270 Winchester, 270 Weatherby Magnum and the 270 WSM will be around for a long time. The other new whizz bangs will be relegated to the scrap heap within a generation. Couple of last thing in my sermon. The only Weatherby cartridges I would really like to have are 270 and 257. The 270 was his first and it has been written that the 257 was his favorite. It is with geographic home town pride that I live just a few miles from where Roy Weatherby grew up. I have know several of his contemporaries including one gentleman from our church who has regaled me with stories about there adventures growing up together. Sadly all those folks are gone now. I realize that at least some of Roy’s theories about hydrostatic shock have been debunked but I figure I should have a couple of samples of his creations. Oh yeah, of the 11 Grizzly Bears Jack O’Connor killed, 2 were with the 270 Winchester. Among the others were 30-06 and 300 Weatherby Magnum. He and Roy were friends. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

Night and day different? No. How much better? That's more of a value judgement....
I thought the Hornady PRC’s were hype, too. Then my son and grandson bought a couple in 7mm, and I set them up. One was a Savage 110, the other was a Mossberg. Both shot sub minute with the same box of factory ammo. I think that all the stuff Hornady has learned from competition has been incorporated in the Saami spec. Fast twist, tighter throat, proper leade, good case design. Remington got the case design pretty good, but these new enhancements are, I think, enough of an improvement to survive.
Very interesting! That would be very unusual performance out of a rifle at the Mossberg Patriot's price point just 10 years ago. Now we're hearing more and more stories like yours
@@ThebiggamehuntingblogHey John, I went back and found that I had already watched the battle of the big 7’s video. Forgetful in my old age. Consensus of the comments seem to be no practical difference between 7 Rem Mag and 7 PRC. If I had a 7 Rem Mag I’d stick with it. My only 7 is a 7x57 custom built on an early small ring ‘98 Mauser. Strictly a hand loader special. I’m in Kevin “Doctari” Robertson’s camp. Remember what he said in your interview with him about cartridges for Africa Hunting? Heavier bullets at medium velocities. The 7x57 with either the 175 grain Long Range Accubond or Partition at around 2550-2600 fps, sighted dead on at 250 yards shoots flat enough and still has enough energy even out to 400 yards for Elk. With a plain old fashioned reticle scope (no fancy dials) you can hold dead on out to around 325 yards and maybe hold up a little out to 400. That’s still farther than most folks can consistently keep their shots in the kill zone under real world hunting conditions. It’s like Dr. Robertson says, the 7x57 just works!
western seems like a great calibre but lack of rifle and load options and almost little support from relaoding companies making brass dies and similar makes it impossible to think of.
270W was quite popular in my homecountry Sweden after the war but loaded only with quick expanding softpoints by Norma that meant that it could not compete with 6.5x55 loaded with 156 grain bullets for moose . Today it has made a bit of a comback as a rifle used for driven game because with the rigth bullets it has what is needed for wild bore in diffrence for 6.5x55. It is also easier to shut at running game with a caliber with higher velocity. Natuarly "Wildbore feaver" have also helped.
I inherited a Winchester pre-64 in the 270 Winchester area 5 boxes of Winchester super x Silver tips 130 gr. This combo has essentially explosive power. In Utah in 1960 my Uncle hit a 210 mule deer in blew a hole that you could get your fist in, literally.
170gr Berger @2905, at 62000psi using my standard 270win Blaser R8 now with a 1.8twist.. Took a USA made barrel by J.Sip & Sons to do it..After 35years I still love the 270win. Fast twist rates open up huge improvements for long range target and hunting

if you have a classic old rifle then rebarrelling with a modern twist makes so much sense much cheaper than even dropping a grand on an OK quality rifle in some whizz bang calibre then get ripped off on ammunition costs. Set up the old girl with the backfire pad and decent scope and suppressor and enjoy.

If I remember correctly, there is an article put there I read many, many years ago as a kid. The article said that they backed off the load due to hunters saying that they were blowing up deer, making big holes, and blowing up meat of deer, which they complained wasted too much meat of deer.

Options built on the 277 fury could be great options along with other calibres around 7mm, restricting to just 270 removes so many great versatile options around this from 6.5 PRC smaller to 26 Nosler which is ridiculously expensive and short barrel life yes. few options in rifles for so many of those rare calibres and expensive too as for the western few rifles, ammunition options or reloading gear to load your self hardly an option for many.
Surprised the .270 SAUM, which people saying it was more efficient, didn't go anywhere.
The 6.8Western is basically the 7RSAUM case with just the slightest of modifications so not to infringe on their design patent: hence I use the RSAUM-brass for my 6.8Western!
Weatherby 270???? Really good video. I do think the old 270 win is best. But the 270 weatherby is unreal. I like 4831sc 57.5 gr hammer bullets 117 gr.

A Sako AV in .270 Winchester was my first hunting rifle given to me by my dad back in the day. It's still a dandy. I took at least a few pronghorn with that one. I now have another .270 caliber rifle that is a new favorite, a scoped

Its totally my bad, i looked back and the 270 ren was a wilcat. Hornady use to have it in there old reloading manuals, but it wasn't saami approved. It was chambered in thompson center pistols. Sorry about that.
All good! The family of cartridges starts to open up quite a bit if we throw in wildcats. Can you tell us more about the 270 Ren? My understanding is that it's a 22 Hornet necked up to 270 caliber?
Yes it uses the hornet case, it was used in metallic silhouette pistol matches. Straight wall cartridges only, the hornet expanded to 270 was considered a straight wall. T/C made barrels for it, and hornady developed loading data for it. Distances out to 200m. We used 357 maximum alot

The only development of cartridges come from Europe and the USA, with a few exceptions from Asia for the world wars. No design from Africa. Same for other technologies.
and like I said, all these 270 caliber cartridges came from the USA, in contrast to the 6.5s, 7s, and even a few 30s that came from Europe
