Hello! I'm merely soliciting advice here. May I know if gaming laptops are good machines for running statistical computing software like SAS or R for crunching large data sets? Or is it better to purchase a business laptop for such a purpose? Thanks in advance!
Probably, as they are generally pretty good spec wise which means they can be good value for money for various other tasks too, which is why many video editors use gaming laptops. Depends if those workloads benefit from anything else those other machines would offer eg Quadro graphics.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks a lot! ThinkPads are quite price-restrictive for me at this time. But primarily I was thinking of ThinkPad P Series as a possible choice. But if gaming laptop will be a good deal for cost & can deliver similar outcome on a reasonable amount of time, then a gaming laptop -- to me -- might be a good alternative to a ThinkPad workstation. Thanks again! Cheers & mabuhay, from the Philippines!
Can u do a l340 gaming from lenovo too?
Is it the 17 inch version?
I bought the Legion Y540 with the 512GB SSD variant with 8GB ram and Core i5 at around 56k INR (about 650 EUR or 755 USD) So I've been using this laptop extensively for the past 3 months or so and here's a list of things that I've noticed. Pros- For the price, you get a pretty beefy laptop. The specs are pretty good. It has a Samsung NVME M.2 SSD so it boots up within seconds (4 seconds last time I checked) and is quite quick. I love the fact the majority of the ports are on the backside (including a USB-C), allowing for a neater and more organised setup. The inbuilt keyboard on this laptop is really nice to type and the backlit lights work nicely, I type a lot and at around 80wpm and I was able to adjust to this keyboard quite quickly. If you're not satisfied enough with the specs and want to upgrade it, it's really easy to do so, I've installed an additional 8GB ram stick (Crucial RAM 8GB DDR4 2666 MHz) and it works perfectly. I'm also looking forward to installing an additional 2.5in SSD. Lenovo doesn't void the warranty if you choose to upgrade, which is really nice. The Lenovo unboxing experience was really nice, and on first-time usage, there was not a bunch of bloatware pre-installed applications (unlike ASUS *cough*) and it's just typically Macfee app as well as the Lenovo vantage which I do in fact use a lot and find really helpful. I love the built quality and the design of this laptop, It's sleek and elegant. It doesn't have the gamer-ish look to it but this black Legion looks quite professional, classy look to it, which I find far more appealing. Despite being completely made out of plastic, the body feels quite rigid and with minimal flex. The laptop screen opens up nicely and to a full 180. The hinge is quite strong and feels reliable. I've had no issues with gaming so far, it runs most games like a charm. CSGO, GTA V, Warfare all run at smooth frame rates with no noticeable lag. I use Blender a lot too and I haven't noticed any issues with rendering. The laptop has pretty good cooling and I haven't noticed it overheating at all. (I use a laptop stand, which elevated it just a bit which helps a lot with the cooling.) Cons- The first major drawback of this laptop is its battery. It has a terribly short battery life despite turning off the backlit keyboard and limiting the CPU usage. Meaning, you will need to carry the rather heavy charging supply for this laptop where ever you go. This is not ideal as the laptop and the charging supply are both quite heavy. The keyboard as mentioned is really nice when typing, however, I've noticed it gets really dirty quite quickly if you're not careful and the keycaps are made of ABS plastic meaning it gets a bit glossy over time due to the oils present in the finger which is really annoying and I suggest getting a keyboard cover to deal with it or use an external keyboard instead. The camera isn't the best, it's located at the bottom of the screen which gives it a weird angle. I have faced some software issues, like the keyboard not working in the windows login and some others with WiFi and Bluetooth but I think that that's just a Windows 10 and Microsoft problem. The 512GB storage capacity might not be enough for a lot of people. So you would need to add an additional HDD or 2.5in SSD or a hybrid drive. Side notes- The camera is located at the bottom of the display, which might be an inconvenience to some people but I really like the fact the top bezel is very thin and I don't use the camera all that much. The screen is decent. It's 1080p with a 60hz refresh rate, however, considering that its max brightness is only at 250nits it might be annoying to work outside. I might just end up replacing the screen with a better one with 300nit brightness and a faster refresh rate (120hz or 75hz). I don't use the touchpad often and instead, use my own external mouse ( Razer Deathadder) and I highly recommend you do too, laptop touchpads are not the greatest and a mouse is a really worthwhile investment. UserBenchmarks Performance Results- UserBenchmarks: Game 37%, Desk 87%, Work 31% CPU: Intel Core i5-9300HF - 79.2% GPU: Nvidia GTX 1650 (Mobile) - 42.3% SSD: Samsung MZVLB512HBJQ-000L2 512GB - 208.2% RAM: Ramaxel RMSA3260ME78HAF-2666 1x8GB - 44.6% MBD: Lenovo 81SY Overall, my final thoughts after 3 months of usage. Would I have chosen to buy a different laptop instead? No, based on this price range, I think it's one of the best one's out there. If my budget was a little bit higher, I'd get the Legion 5 or ASUS Zephyrus. The look and the feel of this laptop are very nice and I'm quite happy with the product so far.
I get over 5 hours on mine when web browsing or office tasks. Is that not enough for you? Make sure to enable hybrid mode in Lenovo Vantage.
wait how do you replace the screen?
You just got scammed lmao
Lol! Lenovo never sends you sample. Dont know why but u are such a talented youtuber
They send him a Y740 tho.
Yeah they sent the Y740 just after I bought the Y540 and L340, so hopefully this changes more going forward.
@@JarrodsTech how bout a review on l340?
@@JarrodsTech L340 review would be cool too👍. Great work btw.
@@Hightiger69 Thanks!
This is one of the best Y540 reviews available. Your graphs showing the temperatures, clock speeds, and framerates with different power profiles is very useful, and taught me about changing that setting based on my priority of performance versus battery life. Your tests with Optimus on and off were also useful and taught me about the increase in battery life with Optimus on, at the cost of performance overhead in gaming. Thank you very much for the effort you made in your review video. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching your other videos.
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
Just bought mine 2 hours ago. Just to let you know: your review was one of the main reasons I considered buying this laptop. Thanks Jarrod!
Nice, no problem! Let us know how it goes once you've had a chance to use it for a while 😁
@@JarrodsTech So I had the chance to play some games on my new laptop. The performance is amazing! Ultra settings and constant 60FPS on NFS Heat. However, my one concern is that the fans get TOO DAMN LOUD when I play high demanding games! Is there a way to manage the fan speed Jarrod? If yes, how?
Harry Pango i dont think you are able to manage the fans like that
Jarrod'sTech i had that laptop with a 2060 and it sucked , it got really hot after a hour of gaming , and it had to have the charger in it because otherwise the pc would be really slow
Romana thats usually with any laptop when gaming, you need the charger in
The Y light on the lid can be turned on and off via pressing FN+L. This "hidden" key combination is mentioned in the manual. So the brightness cant be controlled but in general the light can be turned on and off.
THANK YOU.
Cool thanks, I admit not a fan of how they have all these random shortcuts, like why not have the option listed in the Vantage software or something so you can do it there (along with the keyboard shortcut noted)? That said, I tried this on my Y530 and it did not work, so not sure if it's the 540 only, which I cannot test at the moment as it's back at home 9,400 miles/15,000 km away.
@@JarrodsTech yeah its y540 only. it doesnt even work on the y740.
*You Are A F***ing God!* That was the only thing that annoyed me about the design. Are there any other hidden combos besides Fn+Q for fans?
@@japzone nothing really interesting. but the y540 manual has its own section for "hidden key combinations".

The most complete review I've ever seen on this Laptop. You've definitely got a new subscriber.
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
Love this thing, I've been testing it the past days and overall I'm very satisfied with the purchase. One thing not mentioned but worth a comment: the build in microphone. It cancels nearly every surrounding sound and captures mainly the voice in front of the laptop. I had no trouble using Discord without headphones but with fanspeed at max + a turned on TV in the same room. The caller didn't hear any disruptive sounds and understood me perfectly.
Good to hear! I would usually test the mic with the fan going, but as I couldn't just easily use a shortcut to max fan speed out did not include that.
me too but whit 1650 gtx and 12 ram
How about the battery life?
@@Edjeason bad it lasts about 3 .5 hours at the medium lightning and this is not v.good

As always, such a well rounded great review Jarrod! All these amazing laptops with GTX 1660ti or RTX 2060 available at good prices - Acer Helios 300, Lenovo Legion Y540, Dell G5, Dell G7 BUT poor battery life. Just wish there was an option to swap the internal HDD for a bigger battery. The search continues lol

Thanks for this review :) I have a question... What are the differences in gaming performance/thermal performance, between a system with an i5 9300h and an i7 9750h. I expect a little worst gaming performance with the i5 9300h, but how much? And what is the difference in Temperature, in a laptop with the same thermal design for both cpu?
I will be able to answer this once I compare them in a future video.
@@JarrodsTech thanks Jarrod. Looking forward to the video
Comparing the predator 300 with both i5 9300h n i7. 9750h.i m just wondering which one is btr.
Hey! I can't decide between the Asus Rog Strix Scar 2 with rtx 2060 and this Lenovo with the rtx 2060.. The thermals on this device worries me, but the opportunity to toggle hybrid mode to get better performance and/or better battery life may be the deciding factor. Any idea wich could be a better purchase?
Hmm I'd probably go the more professional design of the Y540 myself, though I have a review of the 2060 Scar II which might be useful where I perform the same tests: kzhead.info/sun/qdqHaKyZjnN8h58/bejne.html

The benchmarked games are mostly action & shooters. You should add Total Warhammer 2 into that list as a strategy game which stresses the whole system with thousands of wild units battling simultaneously even though it's a less popular genre among kids of today. It also has built-in benchmarks.
I test games that are popular that people want to see, if more people want to see that game I will consider adding it.
@@JarrodsTech Can't blame you for going for popularity. Still very good reviews sir.

Bought this in 2019, and still performs flawlessly ☮️
Thanks for your effort for doing so much reviews. They helped me a lot to decide which laptop suits me. I chose the the y540 due to the high amount of ports, 144Hz, looks not like a gaming laptop, ... Hopefully it will arrive in the next days and run without problems. I had enough problems with my tower in the first half of this year: dead RAM and graphics card (1070 ti) and faulty windows 10 upgrade)
Nice, hope it goes well when it arrives!
Lenovo y540 I5 9300h + rtx 2060 Or I7 9750h + gtx 1660 ti What is best for gaming ?
I'd probably get the i7 and 1660 Ti, not too much of a difference between the GPUs, but the extra CPU cores will probably be more useful long term, that's just my guess though. If you're just playing games max settings today, in many cases the 2060 will be better.
Depends on your preference, if you want an overall great performance then go for i7, but if you want to play with rtx settings in the future then go with the rtx 2060. I'd probably will go for the 2060 though, just for the rtx feature and a little extra performance than gtx 1660ti... 😐

Audio stutters? I've tested PotPlayer with Lav Filters, VLC, and Firefox, with no issues.
Best Y540 review , just as usual .. Keep it up! Note: I know this might not be suitable but I wish if u could add the temp. with each game performance test so we can know which games are mostly suitable with the model.
Thanks! Yeah not really possible to do that, the thermal testing already takes the better part of a whole day to complete as I leave each one going for a long time, just grabbing the temps while doing the benchmarking would not be very accurate.
What about the Y540 with RTX2060?
I only bought this config so don't know how others do
The screen flex worries me...... but nonetheless Thnx 4 ur amazing reviews jarrod.

HI Jarrod! You did great job! Thank for deep analysis! I got my y540 with same specs you mentioned (but 1tb SSD) and the main reason why I pick y540 - is NOT - "odd-design like other gaming laptops does have". I really wanted to get an Acer Helios 300, but it seems to be really hard to get here in Germany, at least the 2019 Version with the same Specs (i7 9750H, 1660 Ti) as the Y540. Also, prices are a bit more expensive here. So I bought the Y540 with the i7 9750H, 1660 Ti, 144 Hz Display (17,3"), 1TB HDD + 1TB SSD for ~1250€, which actually seems pretty good considering the prices here in Germany. Should get it tomorrow, I'm really excited =) Thank you very much for your awesome Reviews and Testings, they helped me a lot! I'll definitely keep watching, even though I found the one for me =) Greetings from Germany!
Nice, hope it goes well!
Got it yesterday and it's great! Already downloaded AC Odyssey and it runs so smooth, partially better than on my Desktop PC (GTX 1080 + i5 7400, maybe the i5 is the bottleneck here). The battery life seems to be a bit weak, but i'm fine with it since I usually use it plugged in. The speakers are not the best, but they're enough and I could connect other speakers. I also checked the SSD and it really is 1TB! :D All in all, it's a little beast and I can recommend it without a doubt! 10/10 would buy again =)

Thanks, probably not, unless they happen to get a review unit available in Australia, so far they've only been able to send over the Y740 and that took me years of work to get anything out of them. I only had this one because I bought it myself, and that was due to a LOT of requests, only a couple of people have asked for the x1 so far so I can't justify buying it myself.
@@JarrodsTech thanks my friend!
I went from a 13.3 inch macbook air m1 to a lenovo legion y540 and holy crap it was a pretty big difference in just the size of the laptop, i never realized a 15.6 inch laptop was gonna be that much bigger, though i still kept my macbook air m1 as a secondary laptop.
Came back to watch this video again.. Im feeling nostalgic :D, remembering watching this video a dozen times last year. Typing this from my y540 :P
How is it working? Does it overheat? Do you see any issues?
@@Palindas No issues :-). Are you planning to buy? I think Legion 5 has arrived. Please check that as well they have moved camera to top
@@anandhu5082 I’m looking to buy this now! For a deal of $850. You think it’s worth it?
@@justintheballer3733 yes, its great laptop. please consider Legion 5 also, it has better camera positioning, on top of the screen
My guy you deserve so many more subs

Amazing review! Can't wait to see Acer Helios 300 compared with Lenovo Y540, i can't decide which should i get
Thanks! Working on it at the moment but still lots to do 😁 laptop comparisons are probably the longest videos to make for me.
I'm in this same dilemma, please help!
I intend to buy this version (60Hz) for normal use and video editing, not to play. The difference for the 144Hz screen is $350. Will I get some gain or is this improvement just for the games? Spectacular review. Super detailed. Thanks for sharing.
Nice review mate.
Thanks!
Awesome reviews, great work man!! Best and most complete/consistent reviews on KZhead by far! I have one question. I just bought Lenovo Y540(i7-9750H, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, GTX 1660Ti, 144 HZ screen) and i plan to undervolt it. My question is, did you find some "sweet spot" where it works best or you just put -0,15 just for the sake of even testing?
Thanks! Usually I use -0.15v simply because I find 90% of the machines I test work with it, some work with more some less, but it depends on the actual CPU rather than the laptop. This means unfortunately there's no one size fits all value, you just need to experiment with it and see what is stable in different workloads for your machine, here's a guide if you need one: kzhead.info/sun/rLKtabBreYmFeac/bejne.html
Hi Jarrod, you covered all the details here and convinced me to get this one. However, in my country, they are selling Y540 (same specs) but without OS (with DOS) - is it going to be easy to install windows and all drivers (from lenovo site) on it? Thanks :)
