  • Lilly was the epitome of a toxic "friend". I remember even as a kid seeing this movie, and absolutely being annoyed with the way she tried to make everything about herself and not a friend in the least bit. Just so frustrating, ugh.

    • Forreal though! She's the one character I hated the most. She was more than toxic. She was jealous. She didn't like the fact that her "friend" had a glow up and was actually pretty and starting to get attention. Granted, that attention was disingenuous, but when you're at the bottom of social hierarchy (especially in high school), you tend to ignore fake people because you're not used to certain attention. The only thing I will commend Lily for is NOT sharing Mia's secret.

I don't know if that was out of loyalty, or not wanting Mia to become even more popular (because Lilly's ego wouldn't want her to become even more popular). It felt really nuanced. Such an interesting movie.

  • In the books her father is alive and the reason she is a princess all of the sudden it's because he had testicular cancer which has left him infertile, meaning he can't have more children so he decides to legitimise Mia in order to have an heir, she always knew who he was but because her parents were never married she was a bastard and therefore not in the line of succession. They changed it for the movie because Disney thought death was more kid friendly than the word testicles.

    @TabbyeLynne@TabbyeLynne2 жыл бұрын
    • I heard the reason was because they cast Julie Andrews as the grandma and they couldn't have HER playing a cruel lady like that. As for the cancer thing, if they hadn't cast Julie Andrews, they could have just left out the word and gotten away with that (just said "he can't have kids").

They saw their best friends being happy together and they planned to ruin that for their own benefit. Being a little jealous might be normal, I dunno, depends on the age, I guess. But down right ruining a relationship is just cruel. For some reason, I also had trouble liking Stella in Lemonade Mouth. She also felt very pushy and self-centered, when the others didn't do stuff in "her" way. She came around though, most of the time. And I guess it wasn't too much for the others.

Awesome. Just awesome. Very comforting and relatable to those of us who have naturally curly hair *AND DON’T WANT TO DAMAGE IT WITH STRAIGHTENERS,* don’t have perfect skin, can’t go without glasses, and prefer not to wear makeup. 😐

  • Mia doesn't want to be a princess because she thinks she can't handle the pressure of speeches and the overall expectation of being a leader. She knows she is not the expected social pretty girl and in a way finds it comforting in not having to be. The makeover i find it quite realistic in the sense that royalty do have relatively strict images to portray, but Mia doesn't like that, when she looks in the mirror i feel her fear the attention of her peers in how much she is changing on the outside. At first she kinda likes the new attention, but then realizes it's all fake and appreciates the people who have been supporting her since before her makeover.

    • I agree that in the book Clarisse is often just hideous and thus a source for comedy . But a lot of times her counsel contributes to the story's conflict being dissolved. Especially with the birth of Mia's brother we start to see a very tender side in her. At times she will open up to Mia and thus unable her to understand just why she is behaving a certain way. Though a bit over-dramatized, the family dynamics in the books are not unusual. Even without her royal background Clarisse is a very strong but also opinionated woman and obviously very bossy. Her son usually tries to avoid conflict with her. With father's conflict avoidance and Mia's free spirited mum, who often lacks bargaining power, Clarisse is the family's authority. Teenager Mia challenges this authority. Through these conflicts and (partially) dissolving them their relationship improves over time and they start seeing eye-to-eye. I love that Clarisse is actually a quite complex character, especially compared to other adults in the books or even the teens (C'mon Michael's entire character is that he loves Mia and tries to suit her. All conflict arising between the two of them comes from Michael being three years older than Mia and Mia feeling inadequate).

  • As terrible as a friend Lily was, I actually appreciated her character because I felt like that was a very realistic interpretation of how this situation would play out in real life. They were 2 insecure 15 year old girls that were the social outcast of their school. Becoming a princess gave Mia the ability to move up socially, and in Lily's immaturity she would make comments to try to bring Mia back down to her level. Maybe they overdid her attitude just a bit, but I think overall it fit her age and character well. And although the sequel wasn't as good, it was nice that they did try to improve her character and show that she had matured into a more emotionally secure adult. Side note: Does anyone else think that if they remade the movie today they wouldn't, or rather shouldn't put such a huge emphasis on the makeover scene? Especially considering the way they did it was kind of mean-spirited. If you were a little kid with frizzy hair and glasses who already had self-image insecurities, you were essentially being told with that scene that your look is unacceptable.

If I remember correctly, these issues were never properly addressed in the movies and just got brushed over. If anything Lily got very easily off the hook and didn't get held responsible for the way she treated Mia. You can understand why someone did those things and still not excuse what they did. From all the comments that I've seen, people called out Lily's behavior. Lily could've very well expressed her anger and jealousy without verbally and emotionally abusing her supposed "best friend".

It’s not insulting and it didn’t make me insecure. It actually made me interested in taking actual care of my hair, my skin, body etc. For it to be healthy. Not to be popular. Frizz isn’t something you can’t change, it means your hair needs some extra love. And if you don’t want to change it, that’s fine too, but that’s a talk for parents to cover. France had basically bullied Monaco into incorporating into its Constitution that, in the event that the princely family did not produce an heir, the country would be automatically annexed by France. The possibility seemed quite real for a time, because prince Albert II was still a bachelor into his 50s, but then he got married and had twins, and the part about giving the country over to France was removed from the Constitution entirely. But then again, the sequel to The Princess Diaries forgets its own lore and suddenly there is a rival lineage in line for the throne who could perfectly take over.

    2 жыл бұрын
    • This may be a year late, but I wouldn't wanna be a princess either. You realise all of the responsibilities that comes with such a role? The education. The politics. The social environment. The expectations. It's a life that will never be private and you have to watch every actions you make so you don't ruin your own reputation and the whole royal family. You have to be a role model almost 24/7. And most of all, you'll have to be responsible for the welfare of soooooo many people that trusts _and_ pays you to protect them. Noblesse oblige, I think it is called. That's heavy stuff, and I don't like heavy. The only advantage I can ever accept from being a princess would be financial, but that also depends if your country is wealthy or not.
