Original Prusa i3 MK2 Multi Material upgrade release - dual/quad extrusion

2016 ж. 27 Қыр.
448 529 Рет қаралды

Original Prusa i3 MK2 Multi Material is the first consumer option available to print with up to 4 different materials or colors simultaneously. The use of up to 4 material feeders with only one hotend makes the solution calibration free and much easier to use than currently available systems with dual or quad extruders. Check out the article for more info - prusaprinters.org/original-pru...

  • This is beautiful. I have an off-brand Prusa i3, added in a duel extruder setup, and all of those disadvantages are true. This seems like an elegant solution to multi-material printing. I would love to see one in action myself!

  • I'm already in love with my MK2 which I haven't even got in the mail yet. And now I'm twice as in-love with it. I wish you all the very best at developing these new printer ideas. No-matter where all the ideas originate, I'm super happy to see them all mesh together into functional incredible printers. I like how this is coming together, and WOW very pretty video presentation! I feel like a mega-billion dollar corporation like Ford has made this video, it's so fun to watch. Good stuff Josef and crew.

    • That's actually a pretty cool idea, just need to have software that can calculate the minimum infill percentage needed to clear the nozzle so that it can fully clear it while only printing infill. Not only would it decrease the amount of filament used, it would also save time as the head wouldn't have to move back and forth so much.

    • good idea but it may be bad for small items or things that need to be weighted in a specific way.

    • of course, for such models we can still use the waste tower. In the end, I can imagine some prints would have to use a combination of infilling and the tower. It sounds as a fun programming/computing project.

  • This would be awesome if rather than doing that cube at the back to change the colour and wasting filament, you could load in a 2nd smaller model that the printer prints when changing filament, it wouldn't need to be perfect but it would let you use the scrap to make a rainbow 2ndry print :D

  • Very nice! Can you set size and position of "waste tower"? And density? Because - waste tower (like more heads) waste some space on heatbed, and waste (how much?) some filament too.. But, almost all has some pro and cons - good job!

  • Great upgrade to a great printer. As has already been asked a few times but never answered, how much extra waste is produced with all the change overs? Instead of a waste tower, could it be set to make a second model using the waste if the proportions were equal?

  • An excellent solution for solving problems with multi-extrusion. Is there any planned solution for the Prusa printing multimaterials when some of the materials are flexible? I like to print parts with flexible and stiff portions fused together, but it seems that the Bowden setup will only jam with flexible filaments.

  • The potential for this is awesome! Surely you’re also experimenting with blending colours? You could have cyan, magenta, yellow and black and mix any tone! The motors could just run at speeds based on normal CMYK colour codes! I’m not talking fades, even though that could work too I guess, but the gcode could state a new cmyk value instead of a binary motor selection.

    @skaramicke@skaramicke2 жыл бұрын
    • This could sadly not work, because the nozzle would have too have 4 inputs, while currently it is just automated filament loading.

  • dude is that the MK7 hobbed direct drive thing on your extruders?? i have those and i couldn't get them to grip enough for my switching extruder on my wanhao Di3. went the with gregs geared bowden mod by richard and hobbed my own 8mm bolts with an M6 tap (tried M4 first, didn't grip so well). great job on the printer and the multi-extrusion system! thumbs up as always!

  • Really great and promising multicolor concept. Is it also possible to mix the colors while extruding? Open source is taking ideas from the community and make it available for everybody.

    @android4cg@android4cg7 жыл бұрын
  • What I'd love to see is your custom slic3r software have a setting for a custom 'waste tower'. This way, for example, when printing in multi colours from the same type of filament, a 'waste' model could be printed during the nozzle purge. Being able to say 'build me this part' rather than 'build me a tower' and make better use of the purged filament would be nice. Even if the colour banding would be crazy it would be cool to not 'waste' the purged filament. Possible? Would layer adhesion be an issue? Is there ever gaps in the waste tower from under extrusion?

  • hello mr prusa i have a question about the upgrade because i'm considering purchasing both the mk2s and the upgrade along with it- Wouldn't it waste loads of filament in the corner of the build plate and what happens when the design is too big and the extruded filament in the corner cant fit on the build plate because the design is too big???????

  • Can you do a video showing how you configure a 3d model with support structure and a few more examples of multi material printing to show the capabilities a bit more please. 1) How does it handle the temperature changes when switching between different materials? IE PLA and Nylon. 2) There currently seems to be quite a lot of wasted material with all the switching between materials (200g wasted for a 200g model). Is there a setting to fine tune that and reduce the amount of material printed out on each material change? 3) Is the 4 material printing compatible with simplify 3d slicer? 4) You are coming to Birmingham next week for the tradeshow. Would I be able to buy a Prusa i3 MK2s there? This thing does look awesome and I think it may even be possible to mix colors at some point in the future which would be amazing.

    • It can be done in this way or maybe it could be possible, I believe it is, to calculate how much it needs to be push in order to have a clean color. Then knowing the speed and volume it can be possible to calculate a time to change filament enough fast before in order to get a desired color at place we wanted.

  • Excellent idea! Esp. on using the teflon tubes + cleaning pad. But why all the stuff with retraction? Wouldn't this be easier to just make 1 nozzle with 4 holes? Your X/Y calibration and Z is going to be easy, after all the nozzle is a solid piece of metal, there isn't much play there ;-) Then the only thing you need to do is to actually "wipe" the off the thin cloth duct-taped somewhere in the corner of the heating bed. If you need details / blueprints - drop me a line. Cheers!

    @DanielBarvitsky@DanielBarvitsky7 жыл бұрын
  • I really like this upgrade, but printing in multiple materials will be longer then other printers because the nozzle temperature needs to change accordingly. Also the "waste" bin created to clean the nozzle seems rather big...? At any case, i like this more then the dual extruders and will probaly also purchase this upgrade later on. I just hope the software won't be a pain to design different prints, i'm quite new.

    @borgqueenx@borgqueenx7 жыл бұрын
  • With multiple filaments backing out so others can advance, there is a risk of breakage of sub-optimal or even any filament. What can be expected during a print job if a piece of filament breaks off part way through the "fork in the road" blocking traffic? Hopefully "Air Printing" will be the worst of it. Regardless, this is still great progress since one should probably not be doing multicolor printing with degraded filament. It is interesting that it was decided to put the "fork in the road" on the print head carriage and not on the frame. The X carriage is heavier that way, but there would be a lot less "backing up" of the filament which is probably bet minimized. It sure is great that good stepper motors are cheap. Otherwise this solution would have been impractical. :-)

    @foxpup@foxpup7 жыл бұрын
  • I wonder if you could make a nozzle that was wider than normal and had 2 or 4 holes cut in it, then use it with a setup like this. You wouldn't need to waste filament when you switch colors, and yo won't have to deal with the issues you point out with multiple extruders. So it'd combine the best parts of this concept and the multiple extruder one.

  • One thing I do not see addressed is print time. How much more time will a simple object take if it uses 4 colors? I imagine that white crown looking object took at least 3x longer to print as it had to change filament colors 4 times each layer. Also, how much extra filament will be wasted to change so much? I see the big green block in the back of the white crown looking object. Is that thing solid plastic? I think these are the hurdles that will make or break this upgrade. Not whether it can print with different materials that require different temps
