WSL Big Wave At Large: JAWS 2020 | MASSIVE BARRELS, INSANE WIPEOUTS!!
WSL Big Wave At Large is a new series that tracks swells and deploys strike teams into the eye of the storm to capture the best big wave surfers as they put it all on the line. For our first episode, we followed a collection of heavy-water elites as they descended on Pe'ahi, Maui, for two back-to-back swells in January 2020. Our camera crew was there to document every moment of this mission.
Witness Jaws in all its power.
This video features surfing from Kai Lenny, Ian Walsh, Billy Kemper, Paige Alms, Nathan Florence, Keala Kennelly, Adriano De Souza, Bianca Valenti, and Matahi Drollet

Dude, I can’t even imaging what it’s like dropping in on that big a wave. The nerves of steel these surfers have, especially dealing with those gnarly wipeouts. So much respect.
Not taking away from these dudes and chicks, but fuck. Can you imagine what kind of balls and physique it took to surf this wave before they came out with the inflatable vests? Fuckin Mavericks, ghost trees , all them big wave spots. And like I said, I'm not taking away from anyone's tenacity and courage to still surf these waves, but God damn them dudes back in the day had literal balls made of fucking titanium. In my eyes, heroes in their own right

Watching big wave surfing is one of my favorite things to do. Once I flew to Maui just to watch the surfers at Jaws. It is so awesome.
I like how the woman says she caught the smaller waves. To that I'd tell her 99.9% of men in the world wouldn't even charge the smaller waves they are still HUGE! She should give herself a bigger pat on the back. Riding waves of that caliber is truly awe inspiring especially seeing a woman charge waves of that caliber.
Well said!
Is this a good beginning spot
Benicio Villasenor Yes of course it’s an amazing spot you better go there or I’ll be definitely disappointed
For suicide?
Easy paddle. Softtop approved.
if you've snowboarded before you're fine
Ya pe’ahi nazare cortes bank & mavericks are rly good 4 starters 😂
My favorite sport ...to WATCH! I just loved sitting on the beach in Hawaii watching the surfers, I never got bored with it.
That billy kemper wave was epic. Such a great bunch of people out in the lineup too. It’s my favourite part of surfing when people you don’t know and have never met are so happy for you when you catch a wave. The best sport in the world and the beat addiction in the world bar none
UNREAL! Possible its the greatest barrel ride of all time...
World Surf League would have to be up there and surely wave of the winter too👍
When I saw it on Nate's vlog. I got fo realz chicken skins. As he said wave of his life. Psyched on this vlog WSL! Yeeeeeewwww 🤙
I have never even been surfing, yet I see the beauty in this sport. Y'all are straight up athletes at the top of your game. Got sea sick just watching.
same, i have eaten major shit on a skimboard on a 1 footer though! hang loose! lol
@@JJM2222 yikes anyone who says "hang loose" is a kook lmfao

respect to the girls! I am seeing them clearly pushing the limit . that bottom turn and stalling right up into the barrel on a 40 foot wave is something you have to go for and we will be seeing more and more of the timing. I was blown away by the tow session . Kai said it best about the freefall and the vertical forward momentum
when you look at the eyes of the surfers and the smiles and epic waves they know they are at home.
I'm proud of these women!! Full guts, and preparation for a sport like no other. They can tackle this then there's nothing in life they can't handle!!!
It never ever never ever get sold to come back and watch again... I'm so thankful for the internet because we get to watch professional surfing on demand 24/7 365...
Two of the COOLest surf icons in history.
Is it just me or is *Kai* *Lenny* actually in a different class than the rest of these great athletes?
Amazing he only paddles he doesn't even look that strong. Big wave surfing will never be as good as drinking the living eternal water of Jesus Christ anybody can drink it but not everyone can do big wave surfing. I've surfed big waves in the past.
I get immense pleasure from simply watching these vids. Imagine the thrill/terror of actually doing it!
As a multi sport athlete I’ve never really thought of surfers as athletes. I don’t mean being physically fit. There is a big difference between the two. This completely changed my perspective. All the elements of a true athlete are what these athletes embody. Amazing and remarkable.
I was sort of in that camp too until I took three days to learn how to surf. I'm 36 and have been a climber (ice/rock) and backcountry snowboarder for a long time, and surfing whooped my ass a few weeks back! My shoulders and core were absolutely worked at the end of three days and I had to get out of the water when I was no longer capable of paddling anymore. I've been watching a ton of videos since I got bit by the bug and these people are animals. I'd highly recommend trying it out if you've never done it before. It's addictive as hell!
Exhilarating dedication in the face of tremendous power requires real courage and 100% focused concentration! Its how I seek out True Love! Radical!!
My goodness that ride Billy don't know how or how to describe it. That was like a gift just to be able to watch it. That giant aqua hazard was perfectly ridden....
Sick!!! Would love a big bonfire with all you just to listen to your stories...absolute mad respect for anyone playing out there!!
I was on a surf competition in the South West of France, with 6 friends and we were 67 participants, at some point I took a 30ft wave and I finished on the beach, but when I turned my back there was one of my friend taking a 40ft wave but he took it too late so he crashed from the top of the wave to bottom. His surf had hit his stomach and went thru it. He died not because of this but because rescue couldn't find him, he was drowning and his stomach was open so he didn't make it alive... Now every surfers who are going to surf where the accident was have to make a sign for saying sorry. It was the first accident that turn on to death here.
can you be a little more specific about the case? what beach it was? id like to know what happened to him...
So sorry to hear that
I'm so sorry for your loss! That is hard for so many reasons!
Watching surfers like this is amazing. 😲 These women are awe inspiring!!!!!
I love seeing the women come out to represent and crush it! As a women’s ice hockey player, I’m in the same boat as them - maybe 5 or 6 women at most to 50-70 men
We just saw the wave of the winter right there. That's it man, done and dusted. Mr Kemper, we salute you!!.
Epic footage of the crazy waves at Jaws, as well as the thoughts and rides of surfers out there ..... insane to see what they are going through, respect to all of them !!! 🔥👊🤙
Big wave surfing will never be as good as drinking the living eternal water of Jesus Christ anybody can drink it but not everyone can do big wave surfing. I've surfed big waves in the past.
These Women big wave surfers are charGing so Hard! They are all my Heroes! Every single women was so committed. wow! Epic.!
Perfect Big Wave surfer? Billy's getting the job done, making the unmakeable determination, Kai's go for it chargeability, and Nate's exuberant, life affirming joy of the ocean with his fellow surfers, having fun, smile would be my recipe to make the absolute perfect surfer.
I can feel that wave crashing on me and breaking all my bones. Hopefully i will surf here one day.
I can’t imagine what it’s like to be thrown around under water by that big of a wave. I got smashed in Hawaii by some 3/4 foot waves on the shore break and had to take a 10 minute breather after 😂
This big wave is truly awesome and when I see it crashing it takes my breath away....just looking at it....you guys are Amazingly brave
I grew up outside like a lot of kids in the late 70s, climbing trees, riding wheelies on bikes. Ive never surfed before. I was a medic in Iraq and put surfing pics up around my room. It represented freedom to me. Where to stand in the chaos. Ride life
I've surfed in Hawai but I've NEVER seen a wave that BIG!
Billy’s wave was insane!
Nicely done with some impressive big wave days!
I grew up surfing with Torrey Meister at Banyans on the Big Island. Crazy how big of things he’s ventured off to. So epic.! 🤙🤙🤙
"Taking off blind"...that line took me back a few years🤙🏻
Know the feeling ... that's when instinct and lot's of practice takes over.
John Smith Dont forget hope.
@@Panslapper ha, ha ... hope and a prayer. I remember talking to a local at Pipeline and he said to me re surfing in Hawaii "you are either spiritual of smoked up" when you go out in big surf.
John Smith I was never ‘smoked up’ that’s for sure and neither was the invisible one who saved my life one day after getting caught on the inside at my local break and being pushed into the rocks. Truth. I miss those perilous days where He took care of me....and the surf.
@@Panslapper I get ya. Crazy days, but good days.
This was insane, the tow in clips are amazing
Surfing for me will always be like dunking a basketball. Just never gonna happen. Over the years at OC, Maryland, I have learned deep respect for power of waves. These are insane. Kudos to these guys and gals. A special bunch.
I’ve always wanted to dunk a basketball. I’ve always wanted to surf. Surfed.... maybe it’s time to dunk a basketball at 31 years old.
Was body surfing in OC years ago on unusually glassy big (for OC) waves, saw this guy come up howling with his shoulder knocked out of joint. Arm just dangling. You had better know what the hell your doing and respect the Ocean
Very well produced. Thanks for sharing.
Crazy that a couple of weeks after this Billy Kemper was fighting for his life. So amazed he made it back so quickly.
Damn! There's some big time gems in there
i have much respect for these surfers, they are so fearless and work so hard...
that was insane.....the power of the waves and the skill level of all the athletes, the ladies are so impressive, it is amazing.....I want to go back to Hawaii now...you all be safe.....Namaste
Best surf video I have ever seen, nice insights from Kai.
Awesome capture of huge waves at Jaws ..... sick to see so many people out there !!! 🤙

love it love it...great clips, personalities, philosophies.
Not a big wave surfer tbh I am not really a surfer . I wanted to be but it never happened but I get such a stoke from watching everyone do this ! Thanks 👏🙏👏

Kai resume the real surf spirit!
i like all the best sound clips at the end
Great video. So well done.
Kai is a Legend !!!!
so good + makin quarantine bit spicier❤️
I always watch amazed riding the heavy waves with heavy music like SoaD or Delta Parole or with relaxing music videos in background. If crazy like then always heavy tho
Waiting for Jaws to reappear so I can catch a stake for myself. Jaws is kind of like a goldmine, it either makes or breaks a young surfer. You either get driven away by the paparazzi, or get wheeled away by a stretcher and into an ambulance. Crazy.
Amazing Kai is a beast 🌊👍🇨🇦
CONGRATS BILLY...SICK WAVE 🌊
💗 it!! So beautiful 🌊
@2:13 "Pain is temporary, FOMO (fear of missing out) is forever!" (Can so attest to this quote as a retired charger-- just watching this makes me feel like I need to sH%#
No, fomo fades away and your injuries will come to greet you when you are 55. If you live that long.
@@hellojrod The only injuries are regrets and b/c we charged during our time, we have none of those! Fortunately for us too, Pe'Ahi at the time was reserved for Laird and the boys. Yo, what about a rocking-chair-foil tow!?

Gymnastics in the barrel... He really wasn't kidding!
I used to say “if it was easy, wahine and keiki would be doing it” well I guess keiki are next!
People that live near the beach running in horror from the hurricane coming surfers "grab your board dude!"
Nothing compares to getting a nice barrel. It is the ultimate experience.

Alwaaayyys awesome...
Wave of the winter as 10:34. Three or four second tube at max speed was a lot of barrel.
I couldn't comment? Subscribed, smiling.
definitely a tow-in advantage!
amazing feats from amazing people. if tow or no tow is the difference from failure or success, go for success. thank you for even trying!
Cal Prewit paddle is pure grit...way more respected, is why Kai said paddle Tow in looks better for us armchair surfers
@@jonathanweiss8955 true I am an armchair surfer. At 65 you live vicariously through others. Paddle or tow much respect. 🌊🌊

this is the other side of the video . They have another one with three perspective filming. its all good though I am going to watch this one too. such a great swell and in 2020.

That file was so hardcore hahha
COOOOL!
Man, what a storm to catch...
Hats off to all you daredevils. You guys and girls are Amazing and crazy......
It would be my dream come true to be able to train and dedicate my life to surf Peahi.
Good luck beauty full surfer Erois bravo🏄✨💙🏝️✨
Years of training and prepping and you work into it...gradually. Even still, you really must want it and getting hooked on the fear and adrenaline rush helps propel you to keep coming back for more. Certainly equipment, vests, safety water craft and breath hold techniques make it easier and safer. The end of the road is aging and injuries. Over 60 and the cost benefit must be given strong consideration. Lopez, Kong, Cabel, Titus and most cut back on charging heavy water well before that age.
Kia Lenny is the new ARTIST.....
