This was an awesome episode!
As it turns out I actually own a B5 Passat 2.8L V6
About to pick up a b8 in less than a month and im so glad yall dropped this
Another option might be the B5/B5.5 W8 VW Passat, but I have heard that those are as deep a money pit as an Audi S4.
@@skylinefever they are indeed, the w8 is considered one of the most unreliable Volkswagens just about ever because of it's very quirky engine design
I owned a B8 S4 for 5 years. And let me tell you, that car is probably the best car in the entire lineup. Reliability is crazy good, better than the 2.0T A4. No joke, its awsome and I miss it.
The DSG transmission had troubles in its early life. There are three versions of it in the B8/B8.5s. There's V1, V1.5, and V2. V1.5 has some updates that help with reliability and V2 is borderline bulletproof.
@@DarkraiDiety How to tell V1.5 from V2?
@@MosheMalak Gen 1 is 2010-2011, Gen 1.5 is 2012, Gen 2 is late 2013+.
@@DarkraiDiety you think 2012 would be alright to get ?
@@xkhan20 It should be fine to get. You'll probably fall in love with it.
B5 is a Super gorgeous body! I would say best body ever!!
I would agree. I've had mine for a couple years and literally stare at it any chance I get.
I saw one recently. The guy put his foot down and when he changed gears I saw a spit of flame and a bang from the exhaust. I was like 🤤 as I hardly see cars with pops and bangs on the road
Probably a bit less ugly than 8l but still one of the ugliest audi's
While I don’t have the B5 S4 I do have a B5 A4, so I still have the wonderful luxury of saying “Damn my car is so sexy!” every do I walk out to my car
Hell no, B8 2013 is what I got but it's only a A4 lol
I’ve had a B8.5 S4 for a year and a half and hasn’t cost me crazy numbers in maintenance unlike my BMW.....been pretty reliable. Only MAJOR concern would be the timing chain but that’s hit or miss, from my understanding.
B8.5 are actually known as pretty bulletproof, aside from DSG transmission I thought....but yeah B5 -7 will break the bank.
owned my 2013 for 3 years now, 90k miles on it now, nothing but oil changes and its stage 1 tuned since i got it
My buddy bought his new, put 140k+ on it and said it was just routine oil changes and maintenance.
I can also attest. My 2013 74k miles only oil changes up to this point.
I have a valve cover gasket leak, I jinxed it
@@bigdbanditdoe lol hey not terrible at 90k + miles
It's always entertaining to see the younger generations talk about the S4 as they often think the B5 S4 was the first S4 or the only S4 that had tons of tuning options. In reality, the 20V turbo 5 had and still has tons of tuning potential. The C4 S4 had tons of tuning options before the B5 was even released.... just as the 5000 turbo quattros and UrQuattros did before the C4 S4. You also mentioned that the C4 S4 was an E30 M3 competitor which is not the case. When it was released, the C4 S4 was aligned against the BMW M5 and Mercedes 500 E in terms of size and luxury sedan performance. Naturally, the S4 was less powerful but it was also much less expensive. They sold out quickly at dealerships and even in 1995 you'd often have to have your name on a waiting list and put down an immediate deposit if a C4 S4 came in on trade... we missed at least 4 or 5 cars that sold in the same day before we finally found one to put a deposit on in July of 1995. I'd also go as far to say that the C4 S4 (when properly treated and maintained) is easily one of the most reliable Audis ever built. We have owned 5 of them now and three of them for more than 15 years. Only 3 flat bed incidents for all those cars since 1995. (Failed fuel pump, failed clutch slave and broken coolant fitting). As far as performance potential is concerned, one needs only to search for "Jeff Gerner UrS4 speed record" to get a rough idea. The timing chain issues on the B6 cars are a lot like the IMS bearing issues on the 996 Porsches. It doesn't seem to happen to every car as the internet would like you to believe but it is also there lurking in the back of your mind. "I wonder if the pin is still in the grenade or if today might be the day..." They are a hit with the Vegas types I suppose. ;-)
And......yep. Agree 100%. The C4 is quite possibly the greatest all-round option here. They are tanks and easy to work on when needed. I had some experience with them (and lots of experience with the 200 20v). Reliability and the option (if budget allows) to build an awesome 1000+ hp sleeper is huge. Plus, the C4 is built so well and looks good (yeah it's subjective) too. And....there's the 5 cylinder. A selling point on its own.
"We should probably just keep moving" what a well timed line. Great narrative about the car that most people will walk straight past without thinking anything other than. "huh, thats a nice looking audi".
I have known b5 to be pretty reliable but still not a car that you can just neglect and it will run forever. B6-7 are a little harder to maintain and the newer ones are actually pretty good too.
come home and i c this, turned my frown upside down! thnx for listening! my dad used to have a b8 with the 3.0L Supercharged and I absolutely loved everything about it. BEST. CAR. EVER.
I had a B5 S4,and I approve this message. It’s definitely a gamble.
I own a b8.5 and I can say it's been a joy. The B8's have insane bang for buck tuning. You can get 80+ hp on a simple ECU tune with stock internals, bringing the car from 333 hp to around 420 hp.
I had a b5 s4, terrible on my pocket. but it was super fun when it was working properly which was not often.
anthony gutierrez lol
So you want proper fitment next? :/ some of us out here struggling

I'm bout to cop a b8, almost did a while ago but I'm gonna do it this time. Thanks fitment, y'all the real ones ☝️
Hard to find, but my pick is the C4 S4. I have a Avant with 6spd box. 5 pot 20v turbo factory wastegate (vented) nothing is that much fun for so little money. 275000km and solid as a rock ;)
I have a 2013 B8.5 s4 DSG and it has 90k miles and not one thing has gone wrong. As long as you keep up with service, it’s an amazing and reliable sports car. It still drives like when I first bought it.
Thanks for making a vid on my car! So excited to watch!
i have a B5S4 and love it! while temperamental at times nothing compares to when it has no issues and ripping down the road.

But what is said is very true and hilarious! Just got done taking the front off for the alternator drive belt replacement! @@nukedpancakes3_863 i mean all cars turn to shit if you dont take care of them. i definitely baby my b5 so maybe thats why it gives me no issues.
@Jay Bravo are they reliable
Mohammad Alakhras It never left me on the side of the road. The biggest issue is when they are extremely modified. Mine is completely stock motor, with oem Rs6 turbos, gen one injector dynamic 1000cc, and tune. 5 years of daily driving with no issues. I DO NOT DRIVE IT AGGRESSIVELY everyday. I baby it 98 percent of the time. Make sure you get someone who is extremely knowledgeable and good to tune it. Also Whenever something comes up I fix it asap. This is not a car for someone who doesn’t maintain there car. If you want something, that you can drive while thr check engine light is on then buy a civic.
Amazing Episode! I was waiting for you guys to do one on the S4! You guys are the absolute best when it comes to getting the facts and getting them accurate. Cudos to you good sir! Only thing I think you felt out was the B7 RS4......Anyway to answer your question defiantly have a soft spot for B5's since I'm on my second one..... But would also love a B7. Hopefully be ordering wheels and tires from you soon
Whenever you are ready brother! Shoot us an email at shop@fitmentindustries.com and we can help get you setup! 🙌
I love my b6 avant (04') pretty rare apparently. If you get the timing chain issue fixed and do the upgrades while the motor is out you'll be fine. The 4.2 v8 is one of the most reliable v8s ever made according to Top Gear. It's a fantastic car. Take care of it, care about it. Working on it isn't as hard as most people say. Changing the oil is as easy as any other car, easier than my BMW roadster.
I think b6 s4 looks nice and if you can get one with timing chain replaced, I think there are nice!!

ive owned a noggy b5 with the alcantara blue interior and it was by far the funnest car ive ever had. im not a racer or a ricer so it only had a new set of wheels but it was stilll alot of fun, it ran super well
Kinda digs at me that you didn’t get into the C4 chassis more. By far one of the best builds audi built but didn’t sell well.
That's because it is S6, naming scheme was changed later, when A4 and A6 etc were released. Correct models in that video should have been 80-series B4 S2/RS2.
just bought a b7 S4. Loving every minute of it
With a having it a couple months, how’s the reliability been! People talk a ton about b5s and 6s being unreliable but b7 is a bit newer so...
I bought a b7 not too long ago as well, have you had any issues with it?
@@ryanohlfs7355 actually yeah last week a antifreeze hose broke, they’re like $100-200 and you have to remove the front bumper to replace it, however zero other issues. It did preventative maintence like oil changes a fluid flush brakes/rotors and tires often but ya really no problems and it’s a blast
I own a B6 and I've run into the timing chain issue. Swapped the motor myself in the backyard without a lift and i have to say it's not that bad. If you can read a forum and own a basic set of tools it is 100% doable. You have to know how to work on a car but in my honest opinion its totally worth it. Nothing sounds better and it handles better than any other car in existence... change my mind
I've had my B9 for about 6 months now, the car is amazing. The ability to go from limo mode to sport with a few button presses truly changes the entire dynamic of the vehicle. The interior is still I think one of the best on the market period, and the practicality makes it a great daily.
how is it doing now? any problems? 👀
@@cesarramirez-wp2go Literally nothing, some flat tires but nothing with the car itself. Coming up on 2.5 years of daily driving and 24,000 miles. COVID really cut my driving down. I took this on a lease, so it's my last 6 months with the car. But it's been very fun and reliable overall.
But its an automatic
1. There is no such thing as a b4 s4, it's a c4 platform s4. 2. Europe got the 4.2L v8 Audi c4 s4 but that didn't make the car cooler.. The 2.2t 20v is the most desired and most expensive variant with prices up to 10k (euros) 3. The B5 isn't the numero uno when it comes to S4's, in Europe the c4 s4 is veeery popular because the 20v 5 cylinder is a much much better platform to work on (also it's bullet proof). But it's changing because the 20v 5 cylinder is becoming more rare and therefore more expensive, not the same case with the B5 frankly (except rs4).
c4 never gets the attention is deserves... I have a 95.5 Urs6 never want another car
@@tiernan787 true that
This guys gets it.
I said the same thing that the b4 is a different chassic than the c4 s4. I have a c4 s4 love it and as far as i know the c4 s4 from four ring performance hold the record for world fastest sedan at 262 mph with the aan inline 5 1000 plus hp
Speaking for yourself at point 3, living in EU and here the B5 most known S4 out there.
I have a B6 S4. And yeah, they're issue prone. But they sure are fun. Besides the timing chains/guides, you need to make sure the problematic cam adjusters were done during that service. A lot of people skip out on them because of the cost, but they WILL fail, and you'll have to pull the motor again. I'm speaking from experience here...
I had a B5 S4 for a long time before I stepped up to the B6 S4. The B5 was nearly new and under warranty so I had a pretty good run with it until I had to replace the timing belt six months out of warranty, $$$. All my B6s--two sedans and one Avant--were crazy fun but expensive maintenance nightmares. They are not for the light of wallet. (And it's why the Avant is stilling sitting in my driveway with cracked headers; replacing those requires an engine pull!)
Great informational video with some comedy that genuinely had me laughing. Well done.
I've had my b5 for 10 years and it's been my daily that entire time. We have a love hate relationship, but I still prefer the stiff hydraulic feel of older cars.. that and refreshing control arm bushings with every oil change
I bought a 1 owner b5 S4 a few weeks ago and loving it so far. However the maintenance that was needed (17 year old car) has been costly. But the one I found is a 9.5/10 condition so I couldn’t pass it up
My friend is selling a 2003 s4 rare original blue color idk if I should buy it
Also the 100 is the predecessor to the A6. My dad had one of the first A6s in my country and they did look quite alike. One of the things that made them 100s was the headrests that had a whole in them. If it was a solid headrest then chances are it was a A6. P.s. but i love autos :(
I've owned my 2001 S4 for its entire life, as I bought it off the showroom floor in 2001 and it was in the 2001 Detroit Int'l Auto Show. I've put over 170,000 miles on it with only one major engine repair for a blown front crankshaft seal at about 165,000 miles. Turbo's still work, car looks great inside and out. Take care of these cars and you'll have fun and comfort for years.

@@geedunk13 I had a gtx2867r on it for awhile and then was thinking about the bnr s3 when it came out but decided to sell it for a newer truck and bought that yellow srt4 I had which I put a zeta 3 turbo on that lol.
