I'm genuinely surprised you didn't give a win for how Wade worked with Ember's light to create a fire in the matchmaking scene. It was such a huge moment for me that really showed how good of a match they were. With her help, he was able to find a way to participate in this cultural tradition for Ember even though they all initially thought it was impossible. And he did it because he knew this was important to them, so it became important to him.

I'm surprised he didn't mention it too especially when he brought up how Wade always notices the pretty reflections Ember's light makes. It wasn't an idea that just popped into his head but because he's observant about the things that are unique to both Ember and himself.
Same honestly. Such ingenuity on Wade’s end when he had no way to light it by himself. But having Ember as a light source allowed him to used light to make a fire. You could say his love burns bright.
The thing that honestly made me the happiest is that we ACTUALLY see the two leads not just get together, they show the PROGRESS. They go on dates, they learn about each other, meet the family, it shows the care and growth and that just felt like such a nice breath of fresh air.
Funny thing is that I heard a lot of people tend to viewed Wade and Ember as close friends more than lovers, but personally it's perfectly normal for Lovers to act more like friends because some people just want to express themselves romantically while not changing how they hang out together.
@@damonlam9145 It's like people expect others to just fall deeply in love from the very beginning. But that's not how all relationships work and that's sad and annoying that people disregard the slow build as not 'strong enough'.

I loved this movie so much. My favorite part about the Vivisteria scene is how Wade wasn't even focused on the injustice of her not being able to see the flower. He's focused on how she was unsafe in the face of prejudice. I thought that was so beautiful and masterfully done.

I also think she was scared because her dad got very angry. It is scary for children to see their guardians angry, even if this is not directed at them.
Fun fact: Pixar released a storyboard of a cancelled end scene where they showed Ember and Wade had a baby made out of steam but they cancelled it because they said they wanted to tell a lot more stories about them before thinking of starting their own family so that might be a confermation that they'll make a sequel or a series. ^^ What do you guys think?

@@heberthalvarez1002 Perhaps you shouldn't listen to the immediate headlines and then ignore actual results. Elemental had a lukewarm opening but then had decent legs, and if it didn't make a profit in theatrical release, it almost certainly did with non-theatrical revenue. So, no, it did not flop

These characters would work perfectly in a Romeo and Juliet story with two rival families and them dying at the end since they extinguish eachother.

What a great movie with such terrible marketing. They made it look like a generic story, "Zootopia with elements", love at first sight. But it was more complext, an immigrant story, personal, relatable and just genuine and beautiful. Cried like Wade at the end, Pixar always gets me, and this is as someone who isn't that much into romantic movies. But the way they fell in love felt real. Glad the word to mouth advertising came through for it :)
I felt the exact same way when seeing the trailers, which is why I passed up on the movie! Might actually go see it now
I agree on the marketing, I had zero desire to watch this and I saw it as a mix of Zootopia & Inside Out, which it was completely not
The trailers *really* didn't do this movie justice. Like, yeah, there's the main plot with the love story, but that's only one layer. It's about the experience of a second-generation immigrant, culture clashes, growing up privileged vs. unprivileged, the weight of family expectations... All with some of the most gorgeous lighting and colors I've ever seen in an animated movie.
I was back and forth on seeing it so many times. In the end I just didn't have the time off to see it.

The reason it got insane popularity was word-of-mouth that the movie was not bad and that it actually had a really touching immigration narrative- since the director based it on his own family’s immigration from Korea, I’m not surprised it’s performing really well there.
I think it's more the fact that we foreigners didn't know anything about the movie, and just wanted our kids to watch something for two hours. It got insanely popular in China, but that's only because the animation is so impressive. I doubt it came across with the point it intended to foreign audiences. - A europeaner.

People were saying this was going to be generic and "Pixar's biggest flop", then they actually saw the movie and it turned out to be a great romantic comedy! Such a great time. Pixar's first full-blown romantic comedy is lovely. It's not subtle with its fire and water metaphor for characters from different cultures falling for each other but it's very heartfelt and sweet.
It wasn't great honestly, it was distracting in that kinda cars franchise way where every passing minute raises more questions about the world that isn't clear. In addition to the fact that the racism allegories were handled with none of the subtlety or nuance zootopia had was very off
@@cocosolis8240 In terms of the racism allegories, usually it would require science and logic to see through the paper thin messaging. Thats why Elemental handled the allegory better than Zootopia imo. Thats seems like a crazy proposition, that is unless you learn about the Leidenfrost effect, which is THE reason why fire and water attracting each other CAN be based in reality (with a few creative interpretations). Zootopia however, to my knowledge, does not provide a reason as to why the predators havent eaten all of the the prey yet. Has their physiology adapted away from their carnivorous preferences?
It's not really a comedy though? Definitely a romantic story, but no romcom here.
I think the movie may have done better initially if it had been advertised better. It still may not be everyone's cup of tea, for whatever reasons someone may have (as with any movie), but advertising did this movie dirty.
the reason ppl called it a flop (and it did opening weekend) was due to the piss poor advertising they did for it. It was focused on a Romeo Juliet angle that ppl assumed to be predictable and overdone. Not ONCE did the ads show the immigration side which was the actual A plot of the movie. It wasnt until word of mouth spread that the movie picked up steam and became loved I work at my local theater, the opening weekend was so bad the movie was quickly moved to the smaller theaters. Around week 2 it picked up SO much they moved it to one of the big screenings. I saw it when it moved to the bigger seating assuming what the ads showed "cut n paste romeo juliet but in the end everyone learns its ok to be different" i was NOT expecting what the movie actually was. I cried multiple times and went on to praise it online. Word of mouth saved PIXAR from this being a full out flop
The fact that this movie came out so successful at the box office after a terrible opening WARMS my heart so much because this movie to me was something really special and Im glad ppl supported it when it looked generic to others.

It’s because the marketing was terrible. It was full of Clod making it seem like he was a main character but he had like two lines. I definitely thought the story was going to be so different compared to what the marketing showed

Wade’s talk about a temper is how anger works. Anger is RARELY a raw emotion unless it’s HYPER specific. And even then that can be a cover for being in trouble. It’s ordinarily a mask for another emotion you aren’t comfortable with or don’t want to/can’t recognize. Being scared or sad are the big ones. I’ve learned finding that emotion INSTANTLY subsides the anger. And it really helps recognize through others anger too.

Exactly! It’s very rare for me to actually take an advice from a movie in my life but what wade said about anger just being something you are trying to tell yourself is something I understand very deeply. Whenever I’m getting annoyed, irritated or just angry I remember his line and try to find what it is that I’m angry about before lashing out on people and it’s helped!

I know this is true, but as someone who doesn't do this it always sounds insane to me. I forget sometimes that so many people are wandering around getting angry every time they feel sad or scared or uncomfortable.
I need to point out that during the bow between Ember and her dad that she didn’t feel the need to open her eyes and check like her dad had. She KNEW he was bowing back.
There were a lot of crying moments in this movie for me and many were shown in the video but for me, the scene that takes the cake is Ember telling her dad "I am a bad daughter". I cannot even imagine the absolute horror in a parent's brain when they hear their offspring say that.

I think one of my favrite bits that's not really addressed in the movie is something with the fire people. Where most stories would have fire elementals be big, bombastic, and destruction incarnate. While it does show that they CAN be destructive, it also shows just how creative fire is. This movie has every single one be a craftsmen. They weld pipes backtogether, they make their food literally by hand, and repair things with insane ease.

It showed them as creatives, passionates and thoughtful, not just industrial, extreme and selfish like many stories do. I was very impressed with their take on fire
Something I loved was how Ember was always taking care of her parents, especially her dad when he's sick. It's so common to see movies about parents caring for their children, but so rare to see the flipside of the now adult children feeling the need to look out for their aging parents while still giving them the love and respect they deserve. It's such a powerful emotion and it makes it so much more understandable why Ember is struggling with her relationship with Wade so much. It was never just needing to live up to high expectations, it was legitimate love and desire to provide for her family.
And something I noticed is that Ember's dad is kinda the villain for manipulating Ember into thinking her taking over the shop is his dream only to say "the shop was never the dream. you were always the dream"
@@user-hk9nd3cu6rI don’t think that’s the message. Ember’s dad just thought that’s what she wanted and when that changed and she wouldn’t/couldn’t communicate that to him… well he never realized it which created the pressure she felt. No manipulation at all.

Funny because I heard some people said that Ember's dad was manipulative and pushy (or something between those lines) and didn't apologize to Wade once for what he did. But can you blame him, since Ember never open up to him about what she want and mostly saw her enjoy working at the shop, he assume that's what Ember wants. Plus, he was mistreated for being a fire person and Wade was no expectation and most likely didn't bother to remember him, and later when he saw Ember and Wade together he was slowly giving up his hatred of them.
Elemental is very personal to me because my Brazilian parents immigrated to the NYC in the 90s, and they had to navigate a world that was completely alien to them. I deeply sympathize with Ember for her realistic anger attacks and introverted personality, which are two things I have. My partner is Bulgarian, and Bulgaria couldn’t be farther apart from Brazil in every way. He’s my Wade. Ember and Wade are just so 100% us from the backgrounds to personalities. So now you know why it’s my newest comfort movie and thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

Same only in the case of NOT being an immigrant and me being black and my boyfriend being white. I still lived a similar life to Ember being in a family who struggled and being crushed under the pressure of high expectations and the daily fear of physical or emotional harm just because of my race. My boyfriend also grew up in a family more laid-back than mine and more well-off. Of course he's also white so for the most part, he doesn't have to live in constant fear of being turned away from homes or businesses or being gunned down by the police and so he doesn't really understand most of my experience. But the fact that he tries to and sympathizes is more than good enough for me. I am actually the extrovert and my boyfriend is the introvert. He keeps to himself but is very open and social with family and friends. I don't have any friends and my family isn't close. This is my newest comfort movie also.
@@truthseeker9249 I was terrified of saying I was Brazilian in public. Brazil has a heinously negative reputation and I was relentlessly ostracized, bullied and vilified because of my nationality. I also refused to speak Portuguese when I was outside with my parents out of fear that someone would whine about us being “illegals”. My bae’s family came from Bulgaria to New York back in the 1950s and naturally they would adjust way better having decades more experience. Me and bae quarantined in the same dorm and we bonded over Nintendo games, our rescue dogs, as time passed I opened up to him and I talked about my insecurities, and he was always there to comfort and support me. We started out… terribly, he was scared of my “explosive personality” and I yelled “I hate you” at him… frequently. But now we wouldn’t trade each other for the universe. Obrigado, mozão. Você é meu maior amor.
I liked the scene after the date, when Ember walks home and the water coming down from the train station. Before she meets Wade this water was more like a threatening force, crashing down. After her date the water appeared softer, calmer. Almost like an embrace.
Something that I don't see brought up much is that the Vivisteria flower, according to Ember, can trive in any element, incluiding fire. So Ember and her dad were in fact not a threat to that garden station since the flowers can live with fire anyways - they had no reason to be kicked out
They were probably kicked out due to the garden in general, not just the Vivisteria. Still an absolutely dick move.

They really should have marketed it as a romantic comedy. I saw a trailer and thought "Oh, another forbidden love story." and checked out emotionally, but a friend of mine that I watch movies with told me that they thought I'd really enjoy it, and I do. The movie makes me cry at like four or five different points and it's now one of my favorite, "I need a good cry." movies.

I instantly watched when they did the WALL•E two-parter
One of the things that I like about how this movie handles the weight of family expectations is by showing that they can be *subtle*. Because Ember's not the standard rebellious kind/young adult character. She gets along well with her parents and *wants* to take over the store because her dad is ruining his health by working too hard. She's clearly so proud of herself whenever her dad calls her a good daughter, because she wants to BE a good daughter and to make her parents proud. And for most of her life, the obvious way to do that was that she'd grow up and take over the store, until in her head it became the ONLY way she could do it. That kind of pressure is so much harder to deal with than strictness would be.
I love this movie so goddamn much. I had just been kicked out of a job that had stressed me out so much, and Elemental was the first movie I saw after that happened. I saw it with my partner, and the entire time he was leaning towards me and saying “babe they are sooo us”. And he’s right; Ember and Wade are literally fictionalized us and I’m not even exaggerating. So maybe it is “Lady and the Tramp but with fire and water”, but it’s MY comfort movie, Ember is MY Disney Princess and I will praise it to high heaven as much as I want. (edit) My Brazilian parents came to New York City in the 1990s, where they had me. Elemental taught me that you don’t have to do massive things for your parents, because they will love you regardless. Obrigado, mãe e pai. Eu te amo.

Elemental is my spirit movie because Ember and Wade are literally me and my boyfriend. Only differences between me and Ember are that my family and I are not immigrants and while Ember, her family and all the fire people are representatives of Asian people, I'm black. But my boyfriend is white and comes from a more well off family than me. He's laid-back, sweet, emotionally flexible and generous just like Wade. I'm passionate, strong, stubborn and fiercely protective just like Ember. It's like Pixar was spying on us at some point or another and decided to make a movie about us. Going to see this when it came out brought him and I closer together. And on the way home in the car, I kept rubbing my belly absent-mindedly and saying "Ember.....Ember..." and then it hit me. Ember. For our oldest daughter. He agreed and now we have our perfect name for our future first princess.
8:39 one thing I think is impressive is when you are looking at wade in this scene, but you see Ember because she reflects off Wade. You not only see the concerned reaction on Wade’s face, but also the sad expression on Ember’s face as she talks, even though the shot is not focused on her, all by looking at a close up of Wade, because water reflects like a mirror. It’s a clever way to show all emotions of both characters without using a wide shot. Clever
One of my favorite points that most people don't even notice is when they're leaving the garden. Wade notices the bubble is shrinking so they rush to get out but it starts to shrink faster the more panicked Ember gets. Fire consumes oxygen and her heavy breathing as well as her fire flickering makes the air in the bubble go away faster, giving them less time. I haven't seen anyone point that out and I love the little detail. It's also a great explanation for why the bubble shrank so fast as they were leaving but they didn't have an issue and had plenty of time to get down there without just saying "movie magic"
This film deserves so much better. Disney actively sabotages Pixar’s work because pixar employees threatened a walkout last year. Because Disney tried to cut queer content out of Lightyear, just like they did with Turning Red and who knows how many other films, and they had the audacity to stand up to the mouse. So now the mouse intentionally has their films bomb by doing no PR for them and shoving them into terrible release windows to have an excuse to fire the ppl who stood up to their queerphobic business practices
Disney was right. Lightyear would have been better without the alphabet mafia invading it. That stands for quite alot of films nowadays, Especially children's movies. It's almost as if people want to indoctrinate kids into their version of "RightThink" and any WrongThink is punishable by social death.
I saw elemental trailers constantly. It just looked generic (and actually not animated great either) so audiences weren't interested. Not everything is a conspiracy, you think Disney doesn't want money? xD
@@carlotta4th it wouldn’t actually be surprising. The glass cliff is the habit of businesses to put a woman in charge during periods when the company is expecting a downturn or in a downturn/crisis. Then women are blamed for the failure. Studios do something similar with movies. They’ll refuse to market a movie that would be lgbtia+ or etc the same as they would other movies and when it doesn’t do as well they go, see no one wants to see a movie about that! Then go on to market the hell out of Man Action Explosion 25! This time we’re in space!
I don’t know one way or the other, but I feel like the movie had bad marketing because it had bad marketing, not some great conspiracy to make it fail. It happens. There are a lot of good films that had terrible, misleading trailers, and I think Elements is just one of them.
I cant help but connect how Ember works with glass to he progression as a character. You first see her working with glass to fix it perfectly into what it was before (the display window) and then, after spending time with wade, falling in love and having room to become her own person, She offers to fix the broken pitcher but gets caught up in the art of it and makes something completely different. Apologizing in the end when she realizes.
IT'S OUT I'm so proud of Elemental. It single-handedly proved that even with the pandemic and the Disney+ releases, Pixar (and by extension, Disney Animation) are still capable of making box office successes. And I'm especially glad for Peter Sohn--this film is a very personal story to him, and knowing that the film managed to triumph after the worst opening weekend for a Pixar film (adjusted for inflation) makes me so happy that it succeeded. As for me, I very much enjoyed the movie ever since it was first announced. Only Pixar can make an immigrant story featuring the four classical elements--and yep, it's a great time.
Bro, during the ending bow, where ember bows to her father and he returns it I started bawling, during the whole movie I related so throughly to Ember as the only daughter of two immigrant parents myself. Every time I fail a test or my grades drop or miss a day at work for being sick I j just think to myself “This isn’t what my parents moved here for, they moved so I could have a better chance at life and here I am not even able to do this simple thing for them?” It feel like I have to sacrifice anything and everything just to suffice even a bit. What I especially related with though was Ember being torn between her fathers wishes and what she wanted to do. Something I’ve always wanted to do is become a marine biologist and it’s something I’ve lived since I was four. But then my mother will shun me, or tell me that I should become a doctor like she was or my father tells me I should use my baking skill to open a bakery just like his family did back in Guatemala. It always feels like you’ll never be good enough, like it doesn’t matter how hard you try, you wont ever be able to return that payment to your parents. That alone is something the movie portrays in Ember beautifully, the feeing of never being good enough. And in that ending scene where she bows to her father and he does is back? all I could think about is how I wish my father would do that to me, how I wish my father didn’t try to stray me from my dreams or be dissatisfied with how I turned out. Ember is a beautiful representation of a second generation immigrant child, of the feeling that churns and twists in you mind, and the ending is something that I feel is something hundreds of kids like me want from there parents. That and what her father says after they save wade? The quip about how she was always the dream, not the shop? Beautiful, brought tears to my eyes. I’m pretty sure I got dehydrated from all the tears I shed.

When I first read this, I was expecting you to say that even though you're hard on yourself, part of the reason they moved was so that you could have a better life where you didn't have to be perfect to be safe, and there was breathing room for mistakes. I'm sorry that's not the case, but maybe that's an angle you should think about instead of beating yourself up? It's like going from severe poverty to being financially stable: the first time you realize that you don't actually need to choke down the food you burned but instead can comfortably throw it out and just order pizza is a triumph, not a mockery of your past. It's proof that your parents succeeded in giving you a better life that you can afford to fail and not worry about it ruining your entire life.
I think people were a bit too harsh when this movie came out, I thought it was honestly not that bad as people were saying, kinda underrated tbh

By my understanding, obsidian is made via rapidly cooled lava, and the movie is very clear that the fire people are just fire. A lava person would probably be the product of an earth/fire couple, so an obsidian person would probably come from the product of that interracial (inter-elemental?) coupling having a baby with a water or air person.

1:51 I think the blue flame is supposed to represent baptized water. It's considered holy and people dip themselves in it. Also, human are mostly water.

Absolutely, MORE movies of men being vulnerable. This channel Cinema Therapy made a movie about toxic masculinity, talking about Aragorn, its surprising how few heroes we have that can be badass and also vulnerable, because those things DONT have to conflict with each other. A hero like Aragorn could behead an orc one second, and then comfort his dying friend the next with tears in his eyes, or sing poems to his girl, or bow as king to his friends. I think we'd be getting a lot further if we were seeing male protagonists like this, that men could aspire to, have some sort of role model, instead of the role models a lot of kids are getting from online influencers like Andrew Tate or Adin Ross. I cry very easily too, not as much as Wade lol and definitely not in public, but it can be very therapeutic. Bottling up your emotions helps no one, and it makes life so much harder for yourself. Especially when societal norms are still that men don't cry and their only appropiate emotional outbursts are anger or lust, its ridiculous, its 2023 for gods sake

There was also a tiny little theory that I had when I watched elemental. The other reason that she can touch Wade and other water people, is because it is in a controlled form. Granted, they can ripple, but still, it is a controlled form like it’s in a bubble. Water that is freely moving like that is not part of a body, is what can hurt her. But if it’s water on a person like Wade, then she’ll be fine 👍

YES!!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! Everything this man pointed out about the film were exactly the kind of thoughts I had when watching Elemental for the first time! The character expressions, especially Ember and Wade’s when they touch each other for the first time, are so priceless! The relationships Ember has with her father and Wade feel very genuine, more so than I would have expected for a romantic comedy. And Wade’s empathy is beautiful: I love that for someone who cries a lot, that never gets in the way of the more tender moments he has with Ember. He really does his best to understand her, and you can tell the advice and encouragement he gives really helps Ember learn to be more at ease with herself. This film really did exhibit a honest-to-God passion and care that would come from the director’s life. As quoted by Cinder: “Perfect match! Ten out of ten!!!”😊🙏
Funny because I heard some people said that Ember's dad was manipulative and pushy (or something between those lines) and didn't apologize to Wade once for what he did. But can you blame him, since Ember never open up to him about what she want and mostly saw her enjoy working at the shop, he assume that's what Ember wants. Plus, he was mistreated for being a fire person and Wade was no expectation and most likely didn't bother to remember him, and later when he saw Ember and Wade together he was slowly giving up his hatred of them.

a win for the rawest Wade line in the film "It's too hot in here" and all at once you get struck with absolute horror that dude is about to evaporate and Wade just quietly accepts his fate bc he would rather die than extinguish Ember's flame... AND THEY GODDAMN DO IT. like yes they last minute save him BUT AFTER HIS "I really love when your light does that" WHERE EMBER AND THE AUDIENCE ARE MEANT TO SETTLE IN TO THE REALISATION WADE IS GONNA DIE IT CUTS TO EMBER'S PARENTS FINDING HER IN THE HEARTH... ALONE. Like they killed him. Yes water vapor and chemistry and preservation of matter reasons yes he was absorbed into the stone and his soul clearly still resonated while his bodily form had dissipated but in effect, the dude was dead. like what the hell. how long was Ember sitting there in that hearth before the water levels finally lowered enough for them to find her. She was stuck in an enclosed space after watching the man she loves evaporate into nothing. holy crap.
I always viewed the beginning of the movie where he wraps her shoulders as not that she's cold. They're surrounded by fog and mist which is made of water so he's trying to protect most of her body
Some of the details of the world of Elemental are just so amazing! You didn't mention it, but the fact that the fire people's clothes seem to be made of fire-resistant materials is so cool! Ember especially seems to be constantly wearing like, glass or tempered clay? Her outfits throughout the film are so gorgeous!

Before I saw this movie, my best friend told me it reminded her of my boyfriend and me, save for the fact that we are both 1st gen Filipino Americans with immigrant parents. Growing up, I always felt a pressure to please my parents and be the daughter they wanted me to be. And with past relationships, I felt the pressure to be "more American" with them, almost like they were dismissive of my family's ways and they didn't understand why I was the way I am. But with my current bf, not only does he understand where I'm coming from, he makes an effort to interact with my family and prove that to date me is to also be good with my loved ones. Because of him, I feel like I have the best of both worlds and that I can be who I am without feeling pressure from either side. It's amazing, and I totally see what my bestie meant when she said I would relate to this movie. Side note: this same friend also said Turning Red was my life story, so yeah, she gets me 🤣

Lost World Jurassic Park! Amen to that! I loved this movie as a kid, and its not just nostalgia goggles, despite the weird script and cliches and sometimes dumb moments, this movie is still an action-adventure spectacle, its exciting, it has great production quality akin to the first one. It feels like an old-fashioned expeditionary adventure movie, just with dinosaurs. The action is great, some iconic moments, especially the high-grass raptors, the truck being flipped, the game trail of dinosaurs being captured by InGen, and San Diego ofc. This movie got SO much shit simply because it was coming after one of the all-time classics, and i cant blame ppl, Jurassic Park 1 is an act thats impossible to follow, becuz its more than just adventure-excitement it has pretty much everything, a smart popcorn blockbuster. Still Lost World is very different but still great.
I'd go with Ms. Marvel (Disney+ Series)

Some of the criticism ive seen about elemental is how it doesnt focus on the story about immigration, and instead focuses on a cliche seen before love story. However, those people are also probably not a part of those families. I am a korean person whos parents came to Kenya of all places to work. Because of this, the messaging of "I sacrificed so much for you" in the movie hit me like a truck. This is not a story about immigration itself, nor is it a story about love. They are parts of a larger story about the children that come from those families, and how sometimes life for them is just a little different than others. I friggin love this movie, even if i wasnt able to express it well.

This is the first movie in a long time where I actually felt like their love grew naturally over the course of the film. Most of the time it feels like the hand of the author is playing with barbie dolls and mashing the characters faces together, but this love story actually felt believable. I don't remember the last time I saw that in a film.
My second favourite movie of 2023. Ember is a wonderful character, and I seriously don't blame Wade for completely falling for her. 13:09 This is based on real science. It's called the 'Leidenfrost effect' (thanks Mythbusters). When cool water hits an extremely hot surface, a layer of water vapor (a poor conductor of heat) provides a thin protective barrier, preventing the water from evaporating. It's also why when you add water to a frying pan to check if it's hot enough, it slides around without evaporating.
In the official novel of Elemental, it goes into more depth of Wade relationship with his dad. Wade and his father had a similar relationship as Ember to hers - Wade's father wanted him to choose one career path and focus on it for his life, and would even make sacrifices just to get Wade into sports teams as he himself was a sportsman. But Wade didn't like that because he wanted to explore many fields of interests instead of sticking to one, and this disagreement caused them to fight a lot. Wade's father died before Wade could ever make up to him, and since then, Wade was filled with regret. He became aimless in life and hopped from job to job, struggling to keep each of them. When he meets Ember, he sees himself in her, and knows that although he can't bring his father back to life and reconcile with him, he can help convince Ember to communicate with her dad. Really sweet and it also shows a lot more untapped depth in Wade's character. In the movie, we only see Wade's impact on Ember, but I think Ember's impact on Wade is that he can finally reconcile with himself and come to terms with what he's lost.
I know you’re a busy guy so you might not read this but I just wanted to let you know how your videos have changed my life. I used to be really pessimistic and it made it hard for me to enjoy life, to see the small beauties that life gave me and focus on the good rather then the bad. I clung to the negativity because it was all I knew how to do. But after finding your channel, and watching it, it’s helped me find joy and appreciation in not only movies but in the world. That even though there are things that are bad, or messy that I have a choice to focus on the things that bring me happiness. So I just wanted to say thank you for everything you do! Elemental was a very interesting take on the reasons why fire and water are complete opposites and why they shouldn't mix! I mean din't get me wrong when I say that Wade and Ember are perfect together I just meant that Elemental has somewhat of a Romeo and Juliet spin on in with how different fire and water are.
I know it's likely not referencing it in any way but I kept misreading the sign in the credits that says "Fiery Grill" as if it was Guy Fieri's name and now I can't help but imagine him as a little fire person in Element City with a show and restaurant and now I would very much like to see a short about that!
I’m so glad this movie is getting love after the godawful marketing it went through. Wade’s look on anger really made me look at my own anger and how that has manifested lately. The world building is phenomenal, usually in RomComs I like one party more than the other but I love these two equally so much. I cannot stop obsessing over this movie. As much as I love Disney’s more self-oriented movies with love as a side effect or after thought, sometimes a love story is still a great story to tell and one universally understood. I just- I love this movie so much. It’s so good.

Holy shit someone mentioned 17776. Easily one of my favorite bits of sci-fi out there that hardly anyone knows about or would be turned off from based on it initially appearing to be some random sports article about football. It's an absolutely masterfully and uniquely told story, and I think everyone should read it at some point.

Something I really like is that when you see Ember being honest with herself, as in she's not trying to cover up something with anger, or duty she lets out the special light that Wade mentions she also does it when she's happy or doing something enjoyable. You first see it when she breaks down in front of the city center, you also see it when she finally lets out how she's feeling with Wade, when she is melting the sand to fix the door she's happy doing so, and you also see it when she remakes the jug. It's such a subtle but beautiful detail showing how when you are being honest and happy with yourself you will shine with such brightness.
This movie was the most EMOTIONAL movie that Pixar has ever made!!! I loved the whole thing!!!

This movie so deserves positivity. I saw it in theaters and have been trying for MONTHS to tell people that it is extremely heartfelt and worth seeing. Something made with so MUCH love needs to be celebrated.
I love this movie and so does my almost-three year old granddaughter. When she wants to watch it, she says: "Can we watch Fire and Water?" and the part that makes her laugh the most is when he eats the first hot food and he stifles his burp-scream. Of all the things she makes me watch over and over when I babysit, this one is my favorite.

I'll be forever annoyed this movie didn't do well in theatres. People compare this to Inside Out and Zootopia, but this movie is a thousand times better than those combined! The worldbuilding, the beautiful love story told, the animation! People say Disney is going downhill, but they willfully ignore movies like this that proves it's far from the case!

Honestly Disney IS going downhill BECAUSE this movie is the first amazing movie they've had in years. And technically this was Pixar's doing. Original Disney has 100% lost their touch but I don't think Pixar ever will. Pixar has always been known for making emotional, deep movies that really speak to people and touch their hearts. They've had a few flops in the past few years but they've still continued to put out bangers. When I was watching this I felt like I was watching Monster's Inc, Toy Story, Finding Nemo and all the other classic Pixar movies again. This was a fresh modern concept but still with that Pixar heart.
7:29 I love love love that Wade is the physical barrier between Ember and the others. He’s keeping them save from her burning their leaves off, implicitly communicating that she doesn’t have to be a danger.
I love how, in this movie, even the subtlest details can add so much more meaning to the scene. Take the reopening party for example. Ember doesn't speak the entire scene until Wade shows up and hesitates when accepting the lantern Bernie offers her. She is trying to subdue her desire of not wanting to run the shop. When Wade mentions the moment they touched, she slowly begins to smile and almost speaks her feelings, but is cut off by Bernie. When she shouts at Wade to leave, you can hear the shakieness in her voice. When Ember rejects him, Wade returns the glass vivisteria she gave him, symbolizing that he is going to let her go. Ember immediately after regrets her decision, the camera holding on her face, seeing the shifts in her eyes as she realizes what she did. Later, she tries to throw the vivisteria into the ocean but doesn't, showing that she doesn't yet want to let Wade and her dream go. Such small facial movements and actions give rise to so many emotions, and it's amazing how well it was pulled off. More win points!

My husband and I went to see this movie, before we got married. At the end of it, I was crying and he was balling. I teased him that Ember and Wade were just like us, and he said he'd been thinking that all movie. Steal the Show is in our wedding playlist(for when we have a real ceremony, we went courthouse for the marriage). This movie holds such a special place in my heart because it is so much like my relationship with my husband.

When I first saw the teaser trailer the 2 things that stood out to me was obviously the world building and weirdly Ember’s jacket with how absolutely beautiful it was. I knew I was going to watch this movie eventually because I’ve watched every single Pixar movie and I don’t plan on stopping now but when I saw the official trailer I thought this was just going to be a generic love story that Disney has done time and time again so I didn’t want to go out of my way to watch it. But I was so wrong. I finally watched it when it came out on Disney+ and the underlying immigration story was so different mixed in with Ember and Wade’s love story was so amazing and beautiful. I cried at the end when Ember gave that respect to her father on the dock. This is such a great movie and I wish more people would watch it instead of just thinking that new Disney/Pixar is automatically bad.
It's so strange to me. I started watching this channel in high school and now I am a parent myself. I have always understood your comments about parenting but now I connect with it. I really do enjoy these consistent classic youtube channels that did not "adapt" with the times and become something different.

I love this movie for how many risks it takes. I now know why people hate this film. They don’t understand this was made, or the message it was sending to the audience. This movie shows love, pain, and details perfectly. This is what Pixar is. Giving us a message we understand, to cry and to hold the ones we love close as we remember the times we have with each other
The racism thing was so over the top. "You speak so clearly" sort of makes sense in comparison to many other characters. The whole message is just non stop. But then they give us many reasons to think that these "racist" things are right. Like the names literally being impossible to pronounce or write. Or the "no fire" sign when we already saw she has burnt plants by accident.
just wanted to say, this channel always helps me keep my mind open to movies and just most topics in general. really wasnt thinking about watching this movie, but having that feeling of wanting to do what makes me happy while not letting down my parents is honestly the biggest reason why of starting my new career of choice. thank you C.W. for always keeping me open to things and giving us wonderful observations and movies to look out for !
Another small little detail that I absolutely adore is the fact that the clothes of each character take into effect what their element is like the fire people wear clothing made out of metallic mesh, whereas the water people have waterproof clothing

I watched this movie some time ago, and I was a bit confused. There wasnt as much.. hype behind this one as other pixar/disney movies. In fact, i've even seen posts about how this movie was dissapointing, which really confused me. Maybe it stems from the fact its not a record-breaking/setting movie, or that the story itself feels a bit more adult than other animated movies from those two companies. I personally liked it, its a good feel-good movie that is quite frankly beautiful. If i had more time, I'd love to do an cross-analysis of this movie vs Zootopia, where the setting is kind of similiar, but also different, the idea of co-existing of different types is fun to examine in terms of storytelling.
the vivisteria moment shows again that only with water AND fire/light, do the flowers bloom they were perfectly fine with just water, and i'd imagine they were also perfectly fine with soil/air but it is the brightness of the flame in their "good enough" habitat that makes them open up. same with the matchmaking scene - amber can perfectly shine and burn on her own but wade concentrates her light, he doesnt "water her down" - he makes her shine brighter it's far more difficult to find equal thing for the other kinds of people... every tree likes wind blowing through its crown but a storm can rip it from the roots? fire gets brighter with a gust of air but can also be blown out? water is nurishing to trees but can also suffocate them if they get watered too much? fire can burn leaves but also gives them healing in a cleansing way? rain is nice in some occasions soooooo... go cloud + water people!(?) those truly have me stumped tbh
I really like the mixture between obvious and not as obvious elemental names, like ember is very clearly a reference to fire embers, while Wade may sound like just a pun related to wading in water or wave, but it’s actually is a name that means Ford/name of a sea giant from Germanic mythology (though I’m not sure why the Earth elemental kid is named Claude since I’m pretty sure that means strong-willed)
Loving the theme of overcoming generational trauma in recent Disney movies. I suspect the writers have stuff to work through and it’s working.
I fully expected Ember to blame her dad after Wade's sacrifice, but they found a way to make the scene work without that cliche. Also I cannot watch this movie without crying 😂

It was interesting watching this movie because in a lot of ways i relate to both the main characters. Like Wade i tend to be empathetic and caring towards my friends and family. Im a easy going”go with the flow” type of guy and my wife is the high strung, fiery type. In that way this movie reminded us a lot about our relationship and how it wasn’t easy but we fought for it and have built it into something beautiful. Then theres Ember, Wanting to make her father proud but ultimately wanting something different from what she thought her father wanted. Me and my dad were much the same way. My dad told me for years that I would make a great engineer and always pushed me to pursue that career. However I always loved cars, specifically race cars, and working on them. I dropped out of college to pursue my dream and at first that made my dad upset. but when he saw how happy and talented i was building my own race car and working at a go kart track, we both realized that the happiness and joy you get from your career is more important. Overall this movie is great. I know not everyone enjoyed or related to it but I did and I think its definitely one of the better films from pixar, especially in recent years.

I went to the cinema not expecting much from this movie, only to be amazed about how creative and dynamic, and at the same time toughful and charming it was, truly a grwat movie experience
To me, Elemental is an homage to Lady and the Tramp. The movie where dogs eat spaghetti has always been my favorite movie, ever since I was a baby. So to see it recreated with all the heart and passion possible is a gift beyond my wildest dreams.

I maintain that Firetown should sue the city for the dam burst. This was the city's responsibility to fix and their approval of Wade and Ember's fix absolves the two of responsibility. Especially bc this was an existing problem resulting from depreciating infrastructure affecting a marginalized community that the city should have addressed earlier
Missed win in the conclusion: Bernie's shop WAS the reason that Ember got to experience her dreams. Setting it up brought them to Element City, and saving it was got her and Wade working together.
