My old vice isn't work as good as it should be so I decided to make new one.
I took materials from the scrapyard. The jack has capacity about 5 tonnes.
I suppose that it hasn't so much capacity but it should be sufficient for my needs.
The whole vise weighs about 40 kg/90lbs.

  • very well done ! it reminded me how much i miss the old KMarts as i bought a couple f their branded hydraulic jacks over 35 years ago and they still work like new ! plus they came in a cheap blow molded plastic case that keeps the handle with the jack i think i paid like 13 dollars for a 1 ton back then just a simple bottle jack yet it got me out of a few jams over the years pulling a variety of trailers with my truck as the jack was always in the bed of my truck when i travelled

  • Bloody brilliant, I have an old bottle jack I bought 40 years ago when my first car had no jack. I also have a large engineers vice that has been tortured and the screw and knuckle have been damaged beyond repair so some clever engineering and it will be fantastic! Thank you, I would never have thought of this!

  • I LIKE THAT!!! Very KEWL!!! The ONLY thing I can see that you'll probably wish you had done would be to harden the JAW FACES. Get a pretty good pile of WALNUT hulls, and bust them up good. Mix them with DRY PLAY SAND and powdered-up charcoal...all mixed together good. Put the mixture in a metal tray big enough to bury the parts in several inches all around in the mix. Have a heavy wooden paint stirring stick. Open up a hole, in the mix, for each part to harden. Take an oxy/Actlyn torch (or a coal fired forge), and heat the metal part to at least a bright orange and immediately, with tongs, place the part into the hole and imediately put a mound of mix on top of it. The mix MAY start popping, so make SURE to wear your PPE...& don't squeeze the parts hard with your tongs. You'll bend and/or put marks into your metal, at this temperature. Leave the parts alone for 12 hours. This step opens the pores of the metal and injects carbon into the skin of it. You're CASE HARDENING them. Them take the parts out and slowly re-heat them till they just barely get a tinge of red and quit. Put them back in the mix and put a mound over them again. Forget them for another 12 hours. This anneals the steel, so it won't be brittle. This "home version" of "Case Hardening" works quite well. It will run the Rockwell hardness way on up the scale! This is better than the (( easy method of heating the metal and plunging it into a bucket of oil. Then re-heating it a tad to anneal it. )))(y'all take a tip from an old tool & die maker...use Crisco shortening to tap with. Load a pill bottle with a few fingers of Crisco shortening...(like you cook with). Pull the lid off and dip your tap into it and put the lid back on. Now tap your hole. You dont heat up your tap, you dont have Tap-Free dribbling on your shop floor and all the mess that usually happens, when you tap a hole...and you can "power'tap" in a drillpress that way, too. ((For aluminum, use Turpentine for tapping)). Again...I love the concept and a flawless training video! VERRRY NICE work! And thanks again for making the video and posting it!

  • I love it, I'm for sure building one asap, the #1 part of vices,they suck having to turn them forever to accommodate a wide piece, not only does this design eliminate the opening process time it looks like it has some crazy strong grip. Amazing professional looking final product man

  • I think there is probably a way to make the little screw on the bottle jack easier to grab/release, and that vise just might be undeserving of that little bottle. You could put an air jack on it or something that is a little more flashy if you wanted. Overall absolutely AMAZING quality build.

    • There is always something to improve :) The vice is already a year old and I'm happy :) If one day I break down, I will build one again but I will use a hydraulic cylinder with pneumatic drive. Thank you :)

  • Saludos, una pregunta esta prensa hasta cuanto se abre para amordazar algo, excelente tu trabajo de verdad que ingenio yo tenia en mente hacerme una pero solo con varilla roscada mas o menos con una abertura de 25cm. pero esta idea también esta genial me gusto, cuídate bendiciones gracias.

  • Thats one hell of a vise. Now all you need to do is turn it into an air drivin vise. Instead of manually jacking it to close use air to close it.

  • Somebody buy this guy a plasma cutter! Seriously though, great work and a stout build. I personally prefer to minimize the grinder dust in my work space and would have gone more with plasma than cutoff wheel, and I would prefer a design with a fixed rear jaw and the front jaw moving. I realize much more complex design, so maybe impractical. Nice job overall.
