Thanks for watching this forge build! Check out our available products on www.ThatWorks.Shop . Also comment below what builds you want to see us make next!
Bell Cranels dagger from Danmachi. also stay safe boys.
Roronoa zoro's three katana from one piece would be great
tbh, id like to see a traditional finnish lapland knife called leuku made...
I agree with the other folks suggesting that the Japanese forge needs to be christened with a Japanese blade. Doesn't need to be big, even a little tanto would be fine. But obviously bigger would be better.
Could you guys make a fencing sword or whatever it's called from the 1700-1800s, for more technical dueling? I'm not sure if I'm describing it correctly, but I have the kind of dueling from the mask of zoro movies in mind, a thin fencing sword. Would love to see one made.
Isn't it fantastic that the less OSHA approved a blacksmith shop gets, the more productive and well equipped it is.
This video is good, but the bloopers are the best..
Y’all seem to be having too much fun
In today's episode we see the rare "Mud Dauber" Ilya preparing its nest.
Really liked it ^^ hm, maybe a video about a blacksmith shop layout; historically & how your experience influence the layout you have right now?
I really liked the part where the cold steel rod was forged to glow red, really cool!
it would be nice to see how the bellow is made.
kzhead.info/sun/bKiCpMqyZGiEoI0/bejne.html, this guy is such a beast in woodworking as those guys are in metalwork
agreed
A japanese style forge deserves to be used first in making a tanto blade, from start to finish, with the straw and rice paper, and clay and the folding technique, that would be awesome to watch.
Check out man at arms hattori hanźo build.
@@simongallant5174 I've already seen it, but Matt editing on ilias work would be awesome.
This video is more "watch us build a Japanese Forge" than it is a "How to make".
Watch us build has a lot of how to.
Lets get a more in depth look at the bellows's construction. Looks efficient.
Please keep doing bloopers that’s awesome. I’d love to see you make your own bloom steel and forge a katana or wakizashi from it. Especially if Ilya goes to town on the engravings
I just got a stabalized burl from you guys and man oh man it's perfectly stabalized. Absolutely perfect! Thank you
I finally found the chanell where Matt and Ilya are doing new stuff. Damn it's been a while...
Bloopers is the BEST
The simplicity and effectivity of the japanese bellows really got me convinced - I'm going to build one for my forge as well!
You seem like a massive tool, but you know how to handle your tools. Respect the craftsmanship. Big up
Cool stuff as always,! I will love another vlog about history around blacksmithing and forged artifacts . Have fun with your new forge guys ^^
I would love to se you guys do a Ringwraith's sword from Lord of the Rings. You've inspired me to get back to work on my Japanese-esk forge.
Cannot wait to see what you make with the new forge!
i am so exited to watch you guys get to do this your way.
I didn't know about that way of lighting a new forge - very cool! Thanks!
Can't wait to see what you create with that new forge.
You guys look like you're having fun. That's awesome, keep it up! Thanks guys.
Loved the forge lighting. 🙂 🖤 🔥
Thank you, enjoyed the creation video. Had not seen a forge like this built from scratch. Be safe guys.
this video has really given me more hope to picking up blacksmithing sooner, one thing i worried alot about was a forge and i thought this build would be so complicated but.....its relatively easy. and i really like the bellows!
Thanks for your time and craft shared much respect for your expertise.
First projects, a set of custom forge tending tools. Awesome video guys great to see how it’s been done for centuries!
if i had more room id build one , this design is great i like the way you hung the hood with the leaves, nice touch. and the way you made the tuyere. i just started making my first sword never had the patience till now.
this video is so cool and very helpful too!
Wow you guys are amazing. I'm not much into posting, but I've been watching men at arms and now this and I wish I had the space to have my own little shop
I learned a lot about building a charcoal forge being that I would like to build one myself I still maybe a long ways off on doing it but it was nice to see roughly the best way of doing so from a great group of blacksmiths. Stay safe guy's!
Looks nice, with clay shrinking 20-30% when fired I don't see it holding the fire bricks afterwards. Would you guys please show your forge after a few good heats?
Awesome work and congrats guys!! My buddy and I really liked the War Hammer build, maybe you guys can do a Bardiche, Billhook, or a Halberd
The music made it looked like I'm watching another essential craftsman video, nice touch.
Great video!!!
Congratulations on the forge. Here's to many a forgiving in it.
This is a great video! Cinematography is well done and I’m very interested in the forge construction of the side draft style forge.
What kind of blocks did you use? You should make an anchor.
That was a fine looking mighty axe, Ilya.
Gracias!
Great!
I need to know more about the materials used to make the actual forge walls themselves, such as the tube going from the bellows to the forge and the material that particular brick was cast with.
A dream for a blacksmith like me, a real japanese coal forge 😊 in the futur i make it too 🔥
Just in time for blacksmith spring fashion collection
Cool video ;) Can you make more details of the air box ? I love this natural artefact....
It really is great to see you having fun and playing together! But that Chris fella ... I'm not so sure about him, you sure he got all of his bolts, as it where?
That's cool. Any chance of doing a a vid on the actual box bellows, dimensions and construction !?!
Excited to see what this brings! Keep up the good content!
We need more of Matt and Ilya southern accent in narrations.
I hate coming across as a besserwisser here, but surely you meant that this mighty fine forge you built here is a side blast forge, and not a side draft forge? As for what have seen, the draft refers to the suction caused by the chimney and hood, which helps suck the smoke out, and the blast refers to the blast of air coming from the tuyere, fueling the hearth. Just wanting to make sure the terminology stays true here, I enjoyed the video!
Jerry Karlsson yes he mispoke thank you besserwisser 👍🏼
Hey, my forge hood is built and suspended the exact same way!
Are the valves of the Japanese bellows built with leather sealings or just wood on wood?
Does a charcoal forge allow for good temperature control? It seems like with experience the bellows might allow decent control.
I must say, I really like Ilya's hammer.. it's a tool, obviously, but so pretty
Ilya we wish, we could watch you make a Katana on this channel
you should make a big nice custom handle for the blower
I like to see you guys make one of the swords from the game Destiny 2 there are different looking ones now but I'll let you guys pick any ^^
Am I missing something? Where is the built of the box bellows as you write in the description? This is imho the most interesting detail.
Dope
I am in need of some road rage tools!
16:37 what the hell kind of accent is Iliya trying to do?! Lol, it sounds like a mix of some Scandinavian accent mixed with something from around the Boston area mixed with something from Alabama... with hints of British flair.
What kind of brick did you use? It looks similar to ceramic kiln bricka.
Really great setup, the traditional ways aren’t traditional just for nostalgia, they work
st georges sword from kingdom come deliverance(kinda historical, overall gorgeous)
curious how the bellows connects to the tue...brick...thing you made. I've only ever seen side blast forges with water tanks and such.
If you look closely in the clip where Ilya is preparing the forge walls (the bricks), there's a tuyere (in the form of a tube) built into one of the bricks, leading from the forge to the bellows itself. Not sure how the double action part of it works, unfortunately, but you can see that it definitely works
Always measure from the center.
Sure glad Illya's a blacksmith and not a mason 😜
Shadiversity sent me, I didn't realize you lost your channel....that sucks. I know that's super late news, but I'm glad to see your doing mostly aight.
I would love to see yall make some mokume gane, and make a knife out of it.
The new forge is awesome, but Ilya's stache is better.
Where did you get the high temp clay?
Классно! Натурально круто! Много полезного для себя почерпнул, спасибо)
Молодец Илья. Как всегда высший пилотаж.
Can you point me in the direction of where / what high heat pottery clay you used or can use and what bricks you are using? I'm aware that concrete will explode but I'm trying to source some larger fire bricks and clay and can only find "high heat cement" here in the eastern united states. Ps great video, great new coal forge.
How thick are the metal sheets of the exhaust hood? Like 2mm / 0.08"?
Björn 14g
@@ThatWorks Ahh thank you, didn't know that it is a measurement system, thought wtf 14g = 14 grams ?? But it means 14 gauges = 0.064" = 1.628 mm, lol.
Hello, Ilya & Matt, hope you well. Can u make an Epic plough with some dragons ingraved. I am thinking SS316 or Damascus steel or both. Regards from Stefan.
what is the brand of charcoal that you use?
Could you guys make a double bellow or box bellow?
Hope you guys are all staying safe. Take care 🙏🏾
Holy shit just realized Ilya was in Forged in fire
Wow
Hi illia and matt I've watched a few videos on Japanese forges and im wondering why some people put a large amount off crushed charcoal in the bottom of the forge before lightning the forge as far is i can make out there is no refactory added
What type of brick is used for the walls?
Illiya having glasses. Does he protect the lenses from getting melted sparks from grinding? If so can he share?
Probably has some real glass lenses, and you can get glass lenses z87 rated.
So I've been curious of a certain sword for a while now. In the book series the Riyria Revelations, one of the main characters, Hadrian Blackwater, carries a "Knight's Spadone" and I have looked for example pictures of said sword for a while, but no one depicts it like a Spanish spadona and from the description in the books and such, it resembles a large, two handed sword, very well balanced and compares to Aragorn's Anduril... has to carry it across his back its so large. Most pictures though, show its like a bastard sword... which, since Hadrian also carries a Bastard sword... would be a bit redundant. Any chance you guys could create Hadrian's Spadone. would be cool to see it come to life?
I have a question. For the bricks could you use YTong? I ask as it's readily available and is relatively inexpensive compared to fire bricks, which are expensive and not all that readily available where I live.
Sean Gere no. They’ll burst to pieces. Or just crumble to dust.
@@poelmeister I should have clarified a little. Covered in foundry, not alone.
Sean Gere nah mate. Won’t work. If you want to keep it on the cheap, you can make bricks yourself from refractory cement though. And even if you don’t want to buy that, you can make it yourself, which will cost you less than 100 bucks for a sizable amount. There are plenty recipes for it you can find easily on the web.
Now i just need the space for it
Are you guys going to make a traditional katana.... Because damn that would be dope
I've always wondered what happened with the old shop and crew? Anyone know?
More war hammers would be cool
I still want you to make сабля Тамерлана make it your 2nd historic build
What kind of coal do you use and why?
Молодцы парни, удачи.
Did you guys dismantle the old open charcoal forge you guys had?
Next time on "This Old Forge"....
awesome vid guys, one question, when ilya hammerd that piece of metal why did it explode in spsrkd??
Welding heat+water on the anvil It makes a great noise also
Love the videos but please get shrouds on those angle grinders... worst injuries I’ve ever had to perform first aid on were from shattered grinding wheels...
Just trolling with that hot cut hardy in the anvil eh.
I didn’t expect you to not show how to make the bellows, it’s what I was here for. Am sad
