The Largest Aircraft in the US Air Force C-5M Super Galaxy in Action

C-5M Super Galaxy military aircraft in action, the largest aircraft in the US Air Force. The Lockheed C-5 Super Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft designed and built by Lockheed, and now maintained and upgraded by its successor, Lockheed Martin. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsized and oversized loads, including all air-certifiable cargo. The C-5 Super Galaxy has many similarities to the smaller Lockheed C-141 Starlifter and the later Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. The C-5 Super Galaxy is among the largest military aircraft in the world.

  • Started out what ended up being a 36 year career working on the C-5. 8 years active duty and another 28 years working civil service as a civilian employee of DOD. Worked as a pneudraulic tech my entire career. Had opportunities to move into other things along the way. But between the enjoyment of troubleshooting problems and the constant travel opportunities I chose to stay in the field. I moved up, but not out of the field. The C-5 is an amazing aircraft. No matter how many times I flew on it or just watched it lift slowly into the air. It never cease to amaze me that something that BIG could even fly!

  • During an exercise in '76 I was part of a team that loaded our Bn equipment for movement to SC we worked around the clock in two shifts. The biggest thrill was loading 6 OTC semi trailers into one of the C-5's. the trailer tops were about 6 inches from the fuselage and about the same between. Overall we did 6 C-5, about 27 C-141 and around 120 C-130's during the 72 hour period out of DMAFB.

Not only do they have the biggest transport plane, they also have the biggest helicopter. Unlike you Americans, the Russians don't brag but keep a low profile. Anyone who brags needs it.

  • I got a tour of one when I was first assigned to work on these (communication/navigation technician) & it blew my mind how big these are. That was 1996 & it still blows my mind. They look slow flying because they so big. Looks like they're going 30 mph but more like 300. I stood up in the engine & had to reach up to touch the top of it. Rear tail is 65 feet up. You climb a ladder inside & open the hatch. Strap onto the ring or you may step on hydraulic fluid & slide off the wing.

It was quite an experience and an honor to do so. Mind you this was pre 9/11, they may not be as willing to do that now, but back then they didn't mind because they had pride in their aircraft, and wanted to show her off. 😁 I have also seen the Antonov An-124, and the An-225 before it was destroyed.

  • Seeing the massive firefighter truck reversing I remember an incident happened while I was working in the Middle East on a oil rig. An American was reversing a big truck and he asked his helper who was an Afgan to give signal. The truck was reversing and the Afgan kept saying Khamba Khamba... The driver internalised it as Come back, Come back and kept reversing. Suddenly there was a banging sound and the truck could not move. Stopping the truck the driver came behind and saw that the truck had hit a pole and had stopped. He shouted at the helper as to why he kept saying Come back when there was this big pole, the Afgan was blinking. Luckily an Indian arriving at scene made it clear to the driver that as per the Afgan he said Khamba, meaning a Pole and not what the American understood as Come back. Can I get a few laughs??? ; -)....

The problem with the older C-5 was its uptime rate was @ 60%. We got stuck a couple of times because of needed repairs. Nice to see the C-5M now.
