In todays video we are picking up my newest BMW project build! I scored a smoking deal on a 1984 BMW 318i E30! Were dragging it home, throwing in a fresh battery, cleaning it up and checking it over. Cant wait to make some content for you guys, especially on a classic and iconic BMW. Id like to hear your feedback on which direction we should take this build. I hope you all enjoy!

  • Oh my gosh. My beautiful car. So very glad that we connected and you have this beauty Alec. I can't wait to see the progress. Truly was "Kismet" that we got together. Now I have "sellers remorse", haha. Keep going dude. Love the video. Fun to see bits of our property on screen also. Love to you from the seller of the pretty car.

  • An important tip for you; the sunroof will never seal. It's not supposed to. What it does have are drains, and you're getting water because the drains are clogged. What will happen is that the water will stay in there and condense and cause rust on the inside of the roof. It's a pretty easy fix, but make sure you clear out those drains or you will have roof rust, the kind that makes you remove the headliner, and with an interior that nice you do not want to mess with the headliner. They are expensive and a pain to mess with. Otherwise, that's a really nice car. I have a few of those and they're super fun and really easy to work on. Nice score.

    • ill be sure to take a peak at the drains, ive cleaned em before on newer models but havent checked the E30 yet, good idea!

      @DayOffDIY@DayOffDIY9 ай бұрын
    • On a 25 year old wagon the sunroof was wonderful. I cleaned the drains. But a leak persisted. Really a mystery to many people that assessed the Mystery Leak Source. I sadly closed the sunroof and used home repair caulk and pressed the bead of it into the seam between roof and the rubber seal along the sunroof panel. Later, it was noticed that on this car and older cars, windows are caulked heavily into place and a metal trim is placed around the glass but the trim leaves a gap, perhaps for expansion and contraction, but the sliding metal cover was not closed completely, it just covered the gap. This allowed water from the top central point of the front window to reach and wet the instrument cluster wiring behind the dash. The electrical problems caused electrical havoc. We thought the window was leaking. The rainy season mysteriously disabled the car. Probably a car machine was caused the metal trim cover piece to shift noticeably and it exposed the gap between the trim ends. The electrical problems vanished. Imma gonna also post this reply as a general comment.

  • Excited for the E30 series. I think you’re on the right track with an oem+ type build. There are tons of E30s that have been modified, hacked up, etc. nice clean original examples are getting harder to find. Shame about the rust. Interesting that the underside is so clean despite the body rust. Wonder if it had some prior body work that just wasn’t done 100% and is showing age. I think you did great for $2500 especially with the clean interior.

  • Very nice E30...Being from the UK, I would be so tempted to do only one modification.... To fit the European front & rear 'bumpers' which would transform the look into what BMW originally designed. I would also get all the rust issues sorted...but that is just my opinion ! My late Uncle owned a very nice e30 325i convertible in silver, automatic as well. This was followed by an E36 328i convertible, that I actually bought and drove to Switzerland. That was followed by an E36 318iS coupe, in which I did several track days , and also drove to Monaco for the F1 Historic Grand Prix. I now have a mint E46 318iSE that is my only car. Keep up the good work: really like your videos, and your dog is a star !! Cheers Paul 🙂

My opinion is a car with that low mileage, condition, paper work etc... someone who had 1 in college or high school around 1984 would pay a premium to replace a car like that. • Older bmw can/have a front window with a metal trim around the window. Perhaps for contraction and expansion, there is a gap between the ends of this trim. This opening is covered with a "sliding cover" over the gap in the metal trim. Minor, but if the sliding metal cover is not closed completely, rain water maybe forced into the opening by wind pressure while driving in the rain. This water can in the worst case get channeled along the window and inside the "A" pillar and into the area behind the dash, then onto wires and then into the electronic instrument cluster. The rain water causes unseen electrical problems caused electronics havoc. The rainy season mysteriously disabled the car. Later, probably a car machine wash roller caused the metal trim cover piece to shift noticeably and it exposed the gap between the trim ends. Pushed it into place and all of the electrical problems vanished.

People have widened those bottle cap wheels by converting them to 3 piece and they look great. Pazi88 KZhead channel has them. IACV valve probably needs a clean out too and yeah, there’s bound to be perished hoses.

  • I can answet you on anything about E30's man 👌🏻 Fan shroud missing, fuel filter needs change, spark plugs, intake air filter and there's definitely some vacuum leaks... Don't tune with the air flowmeter you can just clean your throttle body and it's all good. The sunroof seal likes to dry out over the years so it needs to be changed. And the interior is perfect, can't comment on that. Check the joint between gearbox and the driveshaft, they like to go bad. And it's your turn now man, I am very excited as you are 😁❤🤝🏻

  • Check differential overall condition and mounts, the seals on the axels tend to go bad and leak. I guess if you own E46 you will be just fine, most of the issues are shared, like fragile cooling for instance. Perhaps it would be a good idea to strip down the floor inside and backseats as well as mats in the trunk to check how rusty it really is. I was up for a bad surprise on mine.

My E46 came with after market wheels that I swapped out for original ones. • Congratulations. Fellow M10 owner: M10 E30: only 84,85 model. Slow but lightest E30 came to US (2380 lbs) Front disc, rear drum. Use only NON-synthetic 15w40 (don't use 30 weight). Adjust valves slightly tighter. Had two fuel pumps. Internal and external. Internal pump/sender unit set up NLA (or very expensive) use 74 chevy vega pump and (bit of work) retro fit it to existing pump cage. If you want to manuel swap the car, transmission must come from a M10 car. no other transmission fits (Not even M42, Getrag 240). If you put a 4.10 diff from another e30 you have bit of torque off the line (feels faster-feels is the key word) M10 cars and M42(91 318i/is) cars have small case diff. Medium case would be a better (stronger) . Most e30 parts are like LEGO. interchangeable. change brake fluid, rev the hell out of it. M10 is screamer and dead reliable. Unfortunately not much support to get lot of HP out this engine. check E21 and 2002 forums for info on this engine. use Realoem.com to use the last 7 digits of the VIN of car to find the part numbers and FCP euro is a great place to buy parts. surprisingly small parts (still available) , are not that expensive at the dealer. E36 or E46 steering rack swap is great upgrade (faster ratio) relatively easy. Your front Crank seat and rear main seals probably leaking now if not replaced. M10 will run fine with a leaky engine unlike M20's. Buy/download (free in forums) a E30 Bentley manuel

  • I had exactly the same modell: 318iA 1984. Very fun car to drive. But! As you see the suspension is very high. This made the car very dangerous. You need to lower the car by 40mm. Get some Sachs sport-dampers. It will completely transfer the car to a sportscar. The engine and the three-speed auto is bulletprof. Just replace oil and filter and all "rubber" in the engine-compartment, and it will run forever. M10 is the most reliable engine BMW ever made. The engine run best over 4k rpm and up to 6500rpm. There may be a rpm-limiter that will short ignition to ground and that can make a bang in the exhaust. You should remove this. Everything in suspension must be replaced. The biggest problem is rust. Sun-roof is the cause for theese cars to be scrapped. Lets hope there is not to much rust around the sun-roof. And if you find the electrical engine and wires/button, do replace the manual handel. I think it is plug-and-play. The connctor is under the back-seat. I think. Good luck with saving this classic car 🙂👍 PS! Chassi-parts are mostly not produced anymore. You need to search on scrap-yards.
