The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Sofie Hernandez-Simeonidis | December 7, 2021
Stepping into a DMV when you're about to take your first driver's test, while nerve wracking, is something of a milestone. And Olivia Rodrigo has been hitting milestones with frequency this year: her first album SOUR debuted at the top of the charts in May after the success of three previously released singles, most notably the viral "drivers license" (hence the DMV locale and its "interesting vibes.") Her pop stardom may seem sudden, but Rodrigo has been entranced by music and songwriting for the majority of her 18 years, as if she's been observing the right moves from the backseat of the car until it was time for her to get behind the wheel.
Rodrigo and her band take on the Tiny Desk mentality as they experiment with arrangements throughout this performance, embracing new sounds for her songs. The set begins with an acoustic version of the pop-punk-ish single "good 4 u," and a similar setup continues with the addition of an echoey, electric guitar in "traitor." "drivers license" features only Rodrigo and her keyboard, a shift from the recorded version well-known for Dan Nigro's production and the ever-present beeping of a car door sensor. "deja vu" starts softly with just an acoustic guitar until the chorus ramps up to a full band after she exclaims, "Do you get deja vu, huh?"
SOUR tells the story of a first heartbreak, one that inspires an intense anguish most accessible when you're a teenager. That open wound, empty-chest feeling of a breakup, especially when you're as young as Rodrigo, is difficult to shake. The album allowed listeners to bask in Rodrigo's heartache as if it were their own, but as she dances around an empty DMV and laughs along to a song about betrayal, she proves that time heals all wounds.

There are plenty of young female artists way way more talented than Olivia Rodrigo.
I am not Olivia Rodrigo's target demographic but TALENT is talent, and this young lady is as talented as they come. I hope she has a long and prolific career!
Same. Not the usual stuff I listen to, but this was a great set. Talented performer.
hey, anyone that likes her music is her demographic!!
Pure talent crosses boundaries. It's not my kind of music either but her voice is pure and free of modern artifice.

Nice try

I have so much respect for the sound engineers of Tiny Desk! It’s an incredible job they do there.

This isn’t a dig, but there are a few overdubs. Totally fine. It DOES sound great.
Someone know what microphone she is using?

She is just unbelievably talented. The control she has of her voice is incredible.
Yep. Impressive. Future. I hope.
Girl why u lying she got an okay voice
@@phenominiallmusic I find it funny how its seemingly always the people who have little to no knowledge of singing and technique... Coming from a knowlegeable and trained singer, she really DOES have lots of control and mastery over her voice for someone so young. Her voice might not be as showy as someone like Adele or Ariana (shes not a mezzo/soprano for a start), but she has many technical tools at her disposal thanks to her theatre backgroud. She knows how to belt pretty healthily; has a gorgeous head voice and falsetto and can transition between registers with ease, good vibrato, uses intentional break well in order to deliver both stylistically and emotively. True she does share similarities to other "sad girl indie pop singers", but she already is way ahead of many other young mainstream singers in terms of knowing how to use her instrument - and still has many years to develop it. Regardless...haters will still scream "she cant sing". I understand how easy it is to be jealous of a young girls talent and success. You may not think shes an "amazing" singer or think her voice is anything special, but objectively she is very good at singing and her chesty tone stands out.
@@twilightflux995 Honestly she’s Ok. I guess it’s because she sounds like everyone else. Yes she talented and I love her song writing but maybe try and sound unique. It’s not hate it’s an honest observation.
@@phenominiallmusic Proves once again that to be successful you need to be a songwriter. You can have a voice that's an 8 or 9 (with millions of 10s out there wishing they had a career) if you have decent control, and songs you wrote for your own style and voice that are good songs. Adele, Lewis Capaldi, and many others are perfect examples of this.

@@timeless_heritage I sure can be
What I love about this performance is how tight the band is, and how clear the mix is. Every instrument fits within its own sonic sphere and contributes to the sound, rather than being compressed and smashed to mush. Each instrument is performing its own contributions and it gives so much space to the sound that when they converge and play in a similar sonic space it lifts those moments to the stratosphere. This is most evident in this arrangement of "Deja Vu." Killer band, killer songs, killer performer.

I'm 22. These songs perfectly describe what I went through after a very painful breakup. I don't feel alone with my emotions, and thats very powerfull. Thank you Olivia.
A fellow 22 year old, I went through a break up from a relationship that came to be after they helped me when I was discharged from the hospital. Called another girl in his life his ‘second girlfriend’ one time and rubbed me the wrong way. Broke up with me at 6am before a nursing shift at the hospital I had just started working at (third shift). Broke me in to a million pieces. Nearly two years later and I don’t feel worth. Traitor is my song for that part of my life. Long story short, all relatable songs. Sorry for the ramble. Haha.
I love how she let's the music and her voice speak. No flashy clothes, hair up, basic looking. Because it's not just about her, its about her soul, her writing and music❤️❤️
I think her outfit and hair fits the perfect vibe for this concert, it’s amazing
Deja Vu just hits different. So gorgeous live!
Her best song up to now!!!
It’s impressive to her artistry how much emotion she can still put into performing Driver’s License even though it’s a mega hit now and she’s performed it so many times in a short period.
Same!
I'm a 39 year old mom , and olivia's music and videoclips hit me with so much nostalgia for the life i lived in my teens and 20s, as well as all my unlived lives that i'll never get to live, and all the 90s chick flicks that influenced me growing up, and the courtney love concerts of my youth... This young woman has brought so much new meaning to my life with her music, I've never connected with a young artist the way I've connected with her art. ❤
You can feel her pain as she sang "Traitor". Then boom it was gone and to the next heartfelt song..
Her vocal maturity and lyric intelligence at her age is just dumbfounding - and she’s so calm and cool about it. Like, sing a mega hit, shrug, say cool, walk to the keyboard, sing a colossal hit, walk quietly back to the guitar like it’s nbd and like she’s just with her friends in the living room. This new generation of SUPERSONGSTRESSES (Rodrigo and Eilish namely) is so exciting! I can’t wait to hear what she does next! Oh yeah, and if breaking up with her isn’t the biggest regret of that boy’s life already, it will be. Taylor paved the way for these girls and I am ready for this!

Vocals seem easy for her to handle, guitar, piano and I read she writes her own stuff. Ive been listening this songs nonstop on the radio one after another and I didnt know they were from the same artist. So amazing. Now I want a Chloe x Halle x Olivia collab!
Prove who wrong? The entire industry have been in awe of her phenomenal talent since she's been signed...
@@jas_bataille there's literally been so much hate for her live performances for no reason so yea she's definitely proving haters wrong
totally agree!
@@o.o9709 haters are probably immature angsty teen guys or jealous girls who envy her beauty and talent 😂
The little concerts are the absolute best...can't wait to see her in the Live Lounge❤️
Olivia singing Driver's License in the middle of a DMV is so perfect. And the band! 5 stars!
This is just ICONIC as the queen rodrigo is. She deserve the world and I bet she gonna get it.
Her voice is incredible. Loving these tiny desk concerts so much.
I feel deja vu is one of the underrated tracks on the album. Yes, it was a single, but of the singles she's released, it is the least talked about. I hope this performance has more people talking about it. Acoustic Olivia performances are the best
i totally agree
The amount of CONTROL in deja vu... she never fails to impress me.
Wow I never listen to Olivia Rodrigo because I'm not super into modern pop with a lot of editing/tuning, but I'm SO impressed by her vocals and how good these songs sound acoustic. This is fantastic- thank you to these wonderful musicians and to NPR!!
