The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Sofie Hernandez-Simeonidis | December 7, 2021
Stepping into a DMV when you're about to take your first driver's test, while nerve wracking, is something of a milestone. And Olivia Rodrigo has been hitting milestones with frequency this year: her first album SOUR debuted at the top of the charts in May after the success of three previously released singles, most notably the viral "drivers license" (hence the DMV locale and its "interesting vibes.") Her pop stardom may seem sudden, but Rodrigo has been entranced by music and songwriting for the majority of her 18 years, as if she's been observing the right moves from the backseat of the car until it was time for her to get behind the wheel.
Rodrigo and her band take on the Tiny Desk mentality as they experiment with arrangements throughout this performance, embracing new sounds for her songs. The set begins with an acoustic version of the pop-punk-ish single "good 4 u," and a similar setup continues with the addition of an echoey, electric guitar in "traitor." "drivers license" features only Rodrigo and her keyboard, a shift from the recorded version well-known for Dan Nigro's production and the ever-present beeping of a car door sensor. "deja vu" starts softly with just an acoustic guitar until the chorus ramps up to a full band after she exclaims, "Do you get deja vu, huh?"
SOUR tells the story of a first heartbreak, one that inspires an intense anguish most accessible when you're a teenager. That open wound, empty-chest feeling of a breakup, especially when you're as young as Rodrigo, is difficult to shake. The album allowed listeners to bask in Rodrigo's heartache as if it were their own, but as she dances around an empty DMV and laughs along to a song about betrayal, she proves that time heals all wounds.

    • @@phenominiallmusic I find it funny how its seemingly always the people who have little to no knowledge of singing and technique... Coming from a knowlegeable and trained singer, she really DOES have lots of control and mastery over her voice for someone so young. Her voice might not be as showy as someone like Adele or Ariana (shes not a mezzo/soprano for a start), but she has many technical tools at her disposal thanks to her theatre backgroud. She knows how to belt pretty healthily; has a gorgeous head voice and falsetto and can transition between registers with ease, good vibrato, uses intentional break well in order to deliver both stylistically and emotively. True she does share similarities to other "sad girl indie pop singers", but she already is way ahead of many other young mainstream singers in terms of knowing how to use her instrument - and still has many years to develop it. Regardless...haters will still scream "she cant sing". I understand how easy it is to be jealous of a young girls talent and success. You may not think shes an "amazing" singer or think her voice is anything special, but objectively she is very good at singing and her chesty tone stands out.

    • @@phenominiallmusic Proves once again that to be successful you need to be a songwriter. You can have a voice that's an 8 or 9 (with millions of 10s out there wishing they had a career) if you have decent control, and songs you wrote for your own style and voice that are good songs. Adele, Lewis Capaldi, and many others are perfect examples of this.

  • What I love about this performance is how tight the band is, and how clear the mix is. Every instrument fits within its own sonic sphere and contributes to the sound, rather than being compressed and smashed to mush. Each instrument is performing its own contributions and it gives so much space to the sound that when they converge and play in a similar sonic space it lifts those moments to the stratosphere. This is most evident in this arrangement of "Deja Vu." Killer band, killer songs, killer performer.

Called another girl in his life his ‘second girlfriend’ one time and rubbed me the wrong way. Broke up with me at 6am before a nursing shift at the hospital I had just started working at (third shift). Broke me in to a million pieces. Nearly two years later and I don’t feel worth. • I understimated her a lot. To me, this NPR session is the most savage way this girl could find to prove us wrong! Raw talent. Vocals seem easy for her to handle, guitar, piano and I read she writes her own stuff. Ive been listening this songs nonstop on the radio one after another and I didnt know they were from the same artist. So amazing. Now I want a Chloe x Halle x Olivia collab!

  • I feel deja vu is one of the underrated tracks on the album. Yes, it was a single, but of the singles she's released, it is the least talked about. I hope this performance has more people talking about it. Acoustic Olivia performances are the best

  • Wow I never listen to Olivia Rodrigo because I'm not super into modern pop with a lot of editing/tuning, but I'm SO impressed by her vocals and how good these songs sound acoustic. This is fantastic- thank you to these wonderful musicians and to NPR!!
