The daughter of a 73-year-old woman with dementia who was shoved to the ground and handcuffed by police last year said in an emotional interview that her mom, Karen Garner, was “confused and scared” by what happened. Bodycam footage shows police approaching Garner alongside the road as she carried flowers. She was accused of trying to shoplift $14 of items from a Walmart in Colorado. Store security says once they confronted her, she returned the items. But police seemed determined to arrest her. #InsideEdition

When she said “I’m going home” that’s what really got me. My grandmother has pretty bad Alzheimer’s and all she says is “I wanna go home” even when she is home. And I can’t imagine something like this happening to her. that police officer has serious issues. I feel like he was putting all of his anger out on that poor elderly woman who was just confused and scared and wanted to go home. Truly sad 😢

This is just downright sickening. My mom had dementia and two officers brought her home. They were kind considerate, and we still think them to this day for bringing her home even though she passed away back in 2014 I’ll never forget that

I looked up this case and it’s this is one of the things the news story said Last year, Garner’s family told CPR News that the day of her violent arrest has changed her completely. “She doesn't smile, since then, she just is so overwhelmed,” said Shannon Steward, Garner’s daughter-in-law. “We've talked to her caretakers about PTSD from all of this, and it has truly changed the progression of how her dementia was going.”
I was stopped by an officer in a car that blocked traffic. Wanted to know what I was doing (taking pictures - should have been obvious), where I was going, where I lived, etc. I was on the side of the road. He was blocking traffic. None of what he asked was any of his business. I'm in my 70s. Seems like all they want to do is harass us these days.

As the granddaughter of an 82 year old woman with dementia I can tell you how much pain this woman must have been through. It wasn’t her fault that she stole, people with dementia don’t realise what they’re doing. She probably thought she payed for it thats why she left the shop.

This hits home for me because my grandmother had dementia before she died and she acted exactly like this. She was so frail and fell and broke her hip. This woman could have died due to the rough treatment.

She got $3,000,000 and the arresting officer got 5 years in prison. The second officer on the scene was jailed for 45 days. The other two officers involved resigned.

My 83 year old grandpa with Alzheimer's wandered into someone's house in the middle of the night. They called the cops, gave him tea and a blanket, and the cops found his home at 1 in the morning. I'd be livid if he was treated this way.

my grandma whose 79 has dementia since the past 3 years and its been just the last 6 months that i have been living with her…i was so shocked to see her mental ability deteriorate so much every week….we need to be more compassionate…im still learning new things everyday…people with dementia always feel lost inside..they always feel the need to go somewhere..to be somewhere..they dont feel settled…so many times my grandma picks up flowers on the road feeling lost…she would wear my specs and say its hers and then i have to remind her they’re mine not hers…you need a LOT of patience…a hell lot to not lose your mind and voice….i graduated high school last year and living with her has made me realise dementia is not easy to deal with..its like youre trapped inside your own body and your mind doesnt listen to you

Just a update: The family sued and was awarded 3 million. Both officers were fired. The male cop got 6 years prison and the female only got a year gor ratting on her partner. Happy ending.😂

The fact that you went out your day to defend a cop who enjoys his job way more after he does things like this, by the weight she was 80 pounds you would definitely be able to notice how tossing her around is way easier than the people he has handled before, abusing power in this form is definitely not acceptable, he or she wasn't talking about all men or all women but specifically him.
I hope the daughter wins that lawsuit against the police. Truly sickening poor elder lady.

U.s. police cover up their buddy's crimes. No bad report because they resign. Teachers. Same. They molest kids and they teach in another state, doctors and nurses kill people. Insurance pays out. Move on with another job. Nothing will change unless they lose their jobs permanently. Sad
What worries me more is how many people the cops arrested and mocked when it turns out the people they arrested were innocent.

Even if she DID shoplift, breaking a 73 year old's arm that has dementia is still not ok. The officer literally laughed about the sound that her arm made when he broke it! One of the officers at the police station literally said that they loved the sound of the pop. These people should be in jail behind bars for years, maybe a lifetime! Respect your elders.

How terrible. Such a beautiful and innocent woman that could be compared to a clueless child being treated like that, it’s heartbreaking. She even gave the items she stolen back she was in no way needed to be treated like that.

Dementia is horrible and sometimes you can't tell on the outside- Hearing the way she was talking and how fragile she was makes my heart break.

As a person who has worked at a dementia care home. This is disgusting how can a police officer just shove a woman on the ground that’s just assault at this point he should be arrested that’s just messed up man I dunno how people have the audacity to do this 😕
i remember finding this video in my OIS CIR searched back in the day, very happy this got noticed. yall really should name the location and the PD more in the video as well as encourage cities to get their local PD to have a transparent and open youtube page with their body cams.
