  • Another bit to notice is the thematic relevance of the final battle. He lost his mother at the winter fair, his only real family. The fight takes place at the EXACT SAME FAIR, where he stands up to evil and accepts his new family

    • Full stop, if you think his mom is his real family you missed the point of the movie. His mother abandoned him, at that point she was no longer his real family. His foster family becomes his real family. Family isn't blood, otherwise spouses wouldn't be considered family.

In any other movie she would have been trapped in some pocket dimension conveniently by the same villain he has to fight, but in this case they submitted to Occam's Razor and made her an imperfect person who made a bad decision and gave significance to the adults' wisdom.

Even when he knows he's going to have to fight Sivana, he sees him not as someone who can't be redeemed, but as another victim of bullying and gaslighting. Even when he has more important things to worry about, he can't help but try to comfort a little girl.

  • For those who don't know who the catterpillar is, here's a quick history. That'a mister mind, the biggest villain in thr entire captain marvel print history. With sivana, it's personal, with black adam it's even, and individual members of the family may have their own archnemesises, but no one comes close to mind's position of archvillain to the entire family. Despite his being.... well, a nearsighted caterpillar from space with a voicebox, he's the only marvel villain they never wrote as comedic. Back in fawcett cpmics he was a sinple alien worm with healingn telepathy, intelligence and the ability to make indestructible cocoons. He was also the mastermind behind world war 2, an alien conqueror who nuked a city mutated billy's father and threatened to destroy the enitre world. He invented the rouges gallery team up. He had an official body coubt of 186,744 people and was sentenced to the electric chair when his lawyer immediately quit after hearing his crimes. And this was BEFORE dc started writing him. After he joined the dc universe, he became smarter, his telepathy grew to one of the strongest in the entire settings and ge just keeps getting worse and worse. He's a major villain to all hero groups, including the leauge, magic societies and the time travelling legends of tomorrow. This is because he's an unparalleled manipulator, magical genius and his species, the venusian worm, is only the larval stage of a creature that eats time and dimensions. Thankfully he's the last one.... but because he killed them all, he got to keep their skills and knowledge. And yet, he's STILL just a goofy looking catterpillar surrounded by monsters. This can go almost literally anywhere. There's no end to the possibilities here, and i can't wait to see where they go with it!

I've worked with/around foster kids for over 20 years, and being a foster child will likely affect them for the rest of their lives. Kids like Billy, bouncing from place to place, have worse outcomes than others. Shazam! was so honest about what it's like for foster kids, and refreshing and hopeful (even when Billy's dreams are seemingly crushed). Hope is the key, and foster families make it possible for kids to bounce back from trauma. Sharing his powers with the other kids was an awesome moment!

    • Its a noble and very difficult job, from what I hear. I have not done it yet as I'm not in a financial position to do it. But I do have some experience with the system. Foster parents have little to no rights and too often the state gives birth parents chances to not be bad parents. So not only do you have to deal with the state and possibly the birth parents and the chance the kid just gets taken away and given back to the birth parents, but then you also have to deal with the likely odds the child has major mental heath issues. More people need to be foster parents and adopt, but just know its not a job everyone is upto, and there is no shame in admitting that it's not something you can handle. I have full intentions to do it some day, but right now it just isn't something I could handle.

I watch the cheesy TV show, and loved it for what it was. I was super excited about this movie, I loved it in the theaters twice, I bought the Blu-ray pre-order, and I've watched it multiple times with my family and we all love it. But somehow, you made me love it more. How did you do that? Your combination of honesty and optimism is infectious. I'm so happy I discovered your channel this weekend. • 0:21 Actually, in the current DC continuity, the "!" is part of the acronym, as the first... character, in the name of a seventh divine patron. 5:42 Heck, according to the religious texts, even Solomon ignored his own wisdom at times. 14:44 deserves a win for Mary's strategy: either she hits his eye and (hopefully) destroys his power source, or she distracts him with having to dodge/catch the bullet so that he isn't focused on drowning Billy. 14:54 No Beautiful Beard Win for DJ Cotrona? 15:10 Shazam!Freddy's dark-haired pompadour is probably a shout-out to Elvis, whose favorite super-hero (and wardrobe inspiration in the later years of his career) was Captain Marvel Jr. (aka what Freddy's super-hero form used to be called). 16:48 I think his line between pulling out the eye and his temptation fake-out, "What good is power if you've got nobody to share it with?" deserved a win for summing up Billy's character arc even moreso than his earlier "If a hero can't save his family" line (which also deserved the win that it got). 17:15 Even though it's not an original look (it was visually inspired by his depiction the the post-Crisis "The Power of Shazam!" series), but kudos to them for taking a silly-looking character who wouldn't have worked in a modern reasonably-realistic super-hero movie and making him look genuinely creepy. And as for the Award... I know that adding amusingly fitting audio clips from other sources is more Jeremy's thing, but you forgot a few names: Slab Bulkhead, Fridge Largemeat, Bolt van der Huge, Big McLargeHuge, Blast Hardcheese, Smoke Manmuscle, Punch Rockgroin, Roll Fizzlebeef... In how they both give you a bit of a glimpse of what that world is for the people on the ground. The real people. Also the kid who you as a kid reading a comic book can relate to and potentially... aspire to become? I'm not sure if that last part works but I put it in.

    • yah One of the reasons Spider man was one of marvels most popular comics is because he was a nerdy teen who lived a normal life. Minus the super power thing. But kids could relate to the nerd being bullied by the jocks or trying to get the girl you like but being an awkward mess so he became really popular. Kids read and watch these things because it's what we want in life. So making the normal everyday kids have super powers really makes a difference

But leave the team movies to Marvel. And that's not a bad thing. Fans just treat it as such, but... When you look at how Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and, yes, SHAZAM! have hit the ball out of the relative ballpark for DC, but then look at the two films starring MULTIPLE superheroes in the main roles (BvS and Justice League), the lesson is pretty much there on a flashing neon sign: KEEP MULTIPLE STARRING HEROES OFF THE SAME SCREEN!! All the characters (minus the bad guys of course) were really likable, and all the actors did a great job playing them. Asher Angel and Zachary Levi were so good. I wasn't familiar with either of them before this movie, but they both did a really good job. And Jack Dylan Grazer is seriously talented in everything I've seen him in. My dad never remembers who he is, but every time he's in something, he keeps saying stuff like "That kid's great" or "That kid's really funny" and "That kid has a future, he's going places" like, at least 10 times throughout the movie.

  • Let's also not forget that Sivana's Magic 8 Ball is really fitting as his item as there are the 7 Deadly Sins plus him. On top of that, the Magic 8 Ball's die is the same blue as the magic eye from the sins. They're always lying to him, in essence, just like a Magic 8 Ball doesn't actually tell you the future. And on top of THAT, the 8 Ball is game over in pool, so its got inherently bad implications on its own. Its one of my favorite things about this movie.

    • Evan Honestly, the only ones who aren't from the Greek Pantheon are Solomon (Judeochristian mythology), and Mercury (Roman mythology). Although since they spelled Hercules like that you could add Hercules in as well since that's how Romans called him, not the Greeks (the Greeks called him Heracles). Achilles IS part of the Greek myth. But, just as you said, not a god or anything. Just a demigod.

  • Regardless of how well they are received, DCEU's greatest works thus far have been their singular-starring superhero films. Batman vs Superman might go down as one of the most hated films of all time. And Justice League was a disaster of hilarious proportion. Don't even get me started on Suicide Squad... But any films they've made in the last five years starring heroes in their singular greatness have been AMAZING! Even while not being award winning examples of how to hold an audience (Aquaman in particular), they have all NAILED the fundamental foundation of each superhero depicted on-screen. Man of Steel, for all of its criticism, actually nails the origin of Superman, and even builds up General Zod (an already well-liked villain) to be an even more amazing villain (before... you know... snapping his neck). Wonder Woman gets criticized unfairly. It's not an astoundingly amazing film (neither is about 80% of what Marvel does), but it DOES nail the essence of WHO Wonder Woman is. In the beginning, she's just a superpowered, adult-shaped child-figure, raised on literal mythology in the form of children's stories, who sets out on a mission to save humanity (who she has been bred to believe are merely good-hearted victims of the gods, without exception). Her movie is literally all about those illusions getting shattered, but even when she throws up her hands and says: "You know what? I quit." She still fights Aries when he appears before her as the main villain. And then, she's taught a valuable lesson about what humans are truly capable of by... A human sacrificing himself to save thousands of lives. There is honestly no more perfect way to tell Wonder Woman's origin story. WW learns, and teaches US, that being a superhero is about more than just your superpowers. Aquaman was not amazing. But I tell you what, Jason Momoa single-handedly SAVES AQUAMAN FROM BEING A BORING BACKGROUND CHARACTER like he is in the DC Comics. Visually, the movie probably throws too much at the viewer. And the action scenes are just barely on the good side of boring. But Aquaman's STORY is perfectly captured, once again, by the DC screen writers. He's literally an abandoned child, brought up in foreign territory (the land, as opposed to the sea), who learns that his mother is dead (even though she promised she would come back for him). So many of his early illusions must have been shattered that he starts out as a super... DOUCHEBAG; before Mera shows up and helps him learn to be a super HERO. It's a great transformation story for the main character. But also teaches us a valuable lesson about what we "land-lubbers" are slowly doing to the ocean around us, without mercilessly dunking our heads in the implied environmental morality. And finally, Shazam!... Everything great about this movie has been said in the video above. But again, the message is fundamentally faithful to DC Comics' rendition of him. He's a child in a grown man's body, with insane levels of super powers (seriously, only Superman is more powerful, and only by a TAD). So the version of innocence, heartbreak, disappointment, and finally BELIEF, are captured perfectly in this film. There is really no way Shazam COULD HAVE been made better. At least not without completely shattering the link between the comics and the movies, and thus ruining the character himself. I honest-to-God can't WAIT for the film version of Black Adam! Like, holy shit, will that be a good movie, or will that be a good fucking movie???

    • shindari I agree man. Aside from Man of Steel, I’d consider all of them good movies. Man of Steel was meh, but I agree with your points. Also the music was fantastic and the shot design was solid (albeit ruined by terrible color correction). 5/10 I wholeheartedly agree with you on Wonder Woman. It’s a pretty great movie, but it’s flawed; specifically horrible CGI, bland shot design, some corny dialogue, and mediocre villains. But it’s really well done, as you stated. 8/10 Aquaman was decent at best (had some really bad dialogue, choppy editing, and Amber Heard was awful as Mera), but again I agree with your points. Also the villain is fantastic. 6/10 I completely agree with you on Shazam too. Only major problem I have is that it has a really forgettable score. The cinematography was passable and the story was only decent, but everything else was fantastic. 7/10 I also agree that the rest suck, but i actually personally think Justice League is worse than Suicide Squad. They are both awful, but Suicide Squad at least has great (actually, Oscar winning) makeup and costume design, two good characters (Deadshot and Harley), and two that were okay (Diablo and Flag). Justice League has absolutely nothing going for it. Nothing. I’d give JL a 1/10, Suicide Squad is a 2/10, and BvS is a 3/10.

    • shindari you make a lot of good points here. I disagree with a few though: Justice league isn’t really that bad. I’d say it’s just okay. BvS is gaining a lot more fans and praise as time goes on, so I think it’ll go down as more of a divisive movie. Aquaman is a really good and fun movie, and I don’t think you could have possibly found a more perfect casting in Jason Momoa but I don’t agree with how you described the action as “just on the good side of boring” the action is always exciting and incredibly well shot. Just my two cents though, your opinion is still valid.

  • I actually love the tribute to fawcett comics and their treatment of them, even to this day. They were the original rival company and we're the reason superman became as powerful as he did, as well as the existence of supergirl (inspired by Mary marvel). And yet, when they won and bought out fawcett, they never treated captain marvel the original with anything less than respect. Not only is he Superman's equal and even sometimes better, he's (pre new 52) the purest soul in all of the DC universe. His continued respectfully treatment is just great in my opinion. So the fawcett nod was perfectly placed to me, and completey nessecary in a way I didn't even realise before
