Is this the end of large-scale support for the war in Ukraine? | The Bottom Line

2024 ж. 21 Мам.
392 319 Рет қаралды

Was it an historic blunder for Western leaders to keep expanding NATO eastward, even though they knew it would provoke a war with Russia eventually?
Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs argues that the United States provoked the tragedy in Ukraine, and that the Biden administration should be working to resolve it, even if that means painful compromises - such as redrawing the map of Ukraine.
Sachs tells host Steve Clemons that the war is becoming less and less popular throughout Europe and the US, which means that large-scale funding may soon dry up.

The current genocide against the people of Gaza was inevitable given Israels psychopathic leadership and support given from UK America etc The treatment of the Palestine people is criminal.

  • Very interesting interview with Prof. Sachs on the Ukraine conlict. His analysis on the history of the conlict is accurate and reflects the opinion of many American intellectuals. He shows how America is critical towards the drive to arm Ukraine without a clear goal, or a goal that is impossible to reach. He points at the solution through a “negotiated peace”. If the shoe was on the other foot, we all know what the response would be, I mean we literally threatened to Nuke the USSR over missles in Cuba and according to RFK Jr. there were some hawkish generals trying to convince his uncle JFK to nuke the Soviets because their losses would be greater than ours. The Eastern Europeans are ultimately responsible for engineering the geopolitical situation in Europe. That said, the Russians have demonstrated in this war by the troop withdrawals from NATO borders and their refusal to accept a treaty that would prevent Ukraine from joining NATO if Russia promised not to invade, which are all indications that the Russians don't really think that NATO was ever going to invade Russia, instead it was going to check their expansion opportunities. Regardless of the West's flaws, the Russians are the guiltiest party here. When it comes to politics on this grand a scale, there are no good guys in foreign politics just worse bad guys.

    • Correct, NATO has no interest whatsoever in attacking Russia, would never invade Russia and even now, after 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine still won't invade (unless Russia invades NATO territory first). Moreover, none of NATO's Eastern European member states have any territorial claims against Russia. Russia on the other hand, regularly makes territorial claims against Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, the Baltic states or even Poland (just yesterday newly appointed by Putin governor of occupied Zaporizhya Oblast said in an interview, that Warsaw and Helsinki belong to Russian Empire and should be "liberated" using military force). As for Poland and other Eastern European nations being the main actors pushing for NATO eastwards expansion, that is also correct, but you can hardly blame them for doing so. If Russian Empire and later USSR didn't constantly invade, brutalize and occupy/subjegate all of Eastern Europe for the past 300 years, those nation wouldn't seek protection from NATO and joining the western block on the first possible oportunity. That is also entirely on Russia.

If that was the case the US led west would have talked about this loudly non-stop to justify its involvement but they haven't.

    • I haven't listened to this because very often foreign experts have no clue. In my opinion, the main intention of russia is not to fight NATO in the first place, but the idea of restoring a great russian empire/USSR, so they expand by killing other nationalities. If you know the history of Ukraine and russia, you would understand the latter deliberately tried to erase ukrainians identity for centuries through persecution, killings and artificial famine, and now the "madman" can not sleep at night by knowing Ukraine is an independent state that wants to make own decisions regardless of Moscow's will. Of course, the majority of russians are crazy and they believe that russia protects russian-speaking people (by destroying their cities and lives) and of course fights against evil NATO, and if they conquer other former ussr republics one may become the force that opposes NATO, but this will never happen! And important remark: not NATO expand to the east, but countries joined the alliance in response to an aggressive policy of russia toward its neighbors. As proof, Sweden and Finland never planned to join NATO before the war started in 2022, and no one even talked about taking Ukraine before 2014, not even one planned to join, nor did have the support of the population.

  • It would be good if some expert like Jeffrey Sachs would explain why the west, and in particular, the European Union view Russia as a threat after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. What has Russia done in the past to justify this fear? Since World War II, they have dissolved the Warsaw Pact, they have tolerated the expansion of NATO, they have traded with Europe, provided Europe with food, resources, and cheap energy. Surely, Russia must have done something that threaten the west and Europe existentially.

Imagine America building nuclear warhead and being the only country to use nuclear weapon but trying to stop other countries from developing nuclear weapons so that can able to continue bullying and stealing from smaller countries.
