  • As a single mom with a one year old, who will also be starting a graduate program in the fall, this show spoke directly to my soul. I live with my cousin and her husband; they just informed me that they will be moving out without me in less than 3 months. I've decided to move into student family housing. I've been on three different forms of government assistance programs thus far (that I've worked really hard to get off of). My parents are just like hers. Father with a new family who helps minimally and bipolar mother who is homeless. My car was nearly totaled a year ago after a hit and run with my newborn in the car. Just the simple hijinks of single motherhood that no one knows about were broadcasted to the general public. For once, I felt completely understood and heard. Thank you to whoever wrote this series. I don't feel so bad about my situation for once.

  • My name is Alex. I was around two when I witnessed my father punch my mom square in the face, dropping her by the front door of our apartment. He told me to come with him. Instead, I gave my mom tissues and shook my head no of course. He left and never came back. My mom raised me by herself for the next 16 years, working as a maid, moving from town to town and struggled to even put spam and rice on the table. But she did it. I was raised with the love of two parents in one person. We just finished watching this show together before she leaves me to go back to her home country for good next month and this felt like a love letter to our lives together before we say goodbye.

    • This is partially based on Stephanie Land's story and her book called Maid. In real life, Land did actually get to University of Montana. She published her book there, and it got a massive critical acclaim and they made a Netflix show out of it that you just watched. Right now, she is married and has 4 children. Although, neither the show or the book are supposed to be inspiring stories of how some bs determination and will or some dumb nonsense that ads love pushing can lift you over poverty. Stephanie was lucky to get out, and she still writes about how horrific poverty is and advocates for change. She was very frustrated by how horrible her experience was and that nobody should go through that.

My daughter even has that same mermaid. I have crawled out of a few emotionally abusive relationships myself. Cried every episode. The metaphor of how hard the climb will be, but how it will all be worth it, because it’s all for her 😭 😭 Never related more to a series.

  • I think this is an excellent series and recommend that everyone watch it. I've heard that people didn't like the many bad decisions that she made. The only thing I have to say to those people are; Who on this planet hasn't done that? I can almost guarantee you that EVERYONE has made stupid mistakes, things we've done that we would rather forget. However, the constant falls she takes and the raw strength she had to continue and move forward in her life is the most realistic thing about this series, and the most beautiful. Nobody is perfect and things could fall apart in a blink of an eye, but if we can just KEEP GOING, we can also find a way out of the dark. Bravo, Netflix. I will be expecting more great things from you.

  • I think this was the best show I’ve possibly ever seen 😭 I lost my mum nearly 6 months ago - and she was my entire world. She was a single parent and whilst she wasn’t a victim of DV, a lot of the struggles and sacrifices Alex made resonates with the sacrifices my mum would always make to ensure me and my brother had the best life. This show perfectly depicts the power and the deep love of motherhood. It was so well done, I truly felt every moment in this series. And that ending oh my goodness. What a JOURNEY she has been on, how well deserved and incredible must it feel to overcome such hurdles in life and be able to get to the top of that mountain

  • This show made me feel like if she could do all that (like I know many real people could) I can do anything. I am a privilege person, had a kind of rough childhood (alcoholic parent and the other parent really codependent to them) but I consider myself extremely blessed and actually feel really supported by my family now, and friends. I know I am privileged (money isn't an issue and I have gotten an immense amount of opportunities) but I can't seem to let myself just be, to follow what I want and just do it. My brain does stupid shit that just sucks the life out of me, extrem self criticism, crippling insecurity of making a mistake, worrying about everything and anything that hasn't even happened, just not enjoying the present as a whole, feeling like everything I do is a failing... But people had it way rougher than you and made it through, people with external circumstances that made it seem impossible. Idk this thoughts seem to lose sense when I think people who had no money, no possibilities, no easy way out were able to find that, a way out. Why could I not find how to get myself out of the way when they moved mountains to get there? What I have to do to get there is way simpler than what they had to do.

  • There is special place for all mothers and then there is one level above where single mother's must be put. It's not easy to raise a child as a single mother or father. Best motivating scene.

  • That's one of the best endings i have seen in any series!! ❤❤👏👏 Literally, i have no complaints for anything! Every plot and subplot was tied together in the end so perfectly! Hell, even Sean got a happy ending! 😂😂👏👏

  • I wish at the end they had hinted something about Danielle’s situation. She was amazing and so supportive towards Alex

  • I watched this with my wife 2 year ago when our own daughter was maddies age. I have never been in poverty, or even close, and I know that people can end up in bad situations because of things beyond their control, but this show really made me appreciate how lucky I have been. The thing that made me want to scream at the TV was the mother (brilliant performance by andie mc dowall), because while I know the boyfriend is an alcoholic and violent and useless, the mom seems to treat it all like a joke, and Alex has to spend so much of her time bailing HER out. One thing I've learned form this show is, one of the biggest obstacles to escaping poveryty isn't just not having a support network, its also being surrounded by destructive dysfunctional people who will, intenitonally or not, pull you down with them.

    • For someone who hasn't experienced it themselves you summed it up pretty well, I grew up in poverty experienced homelessness and some pretty violent and scary situations through my childhood and teens, I am not rich I don't know if I'll ever own my own home and I still live pay check to pay check but everything I do have I've worked really really hard for literally started from the bottom and to some people my life might seem small but my children are safe happy and healthy I'm able to provide everything they need and they will never have to experience the things I did. Getting out of those situations is extremely difficult especially when you are trying to break generational trauma I'm going to keep slugging on and hopefully go back to school when my children are in school ( sort of impossible right now I have triplets and for reasons stated above no support system) I'm doing this for my kids it may sound corny but tv shows like this give me hope that a different life is possible as long as you keep going.
