The INSANE story of Reddit - the history of how Reddit started, how Reddit became popular and such a successful business, and how the Reddit founders built a billion dollar company from nothing. This is in some ways a rags to riches business story, going from broke college students to extremely rich. But we'll also explore the Reddit API controversy and several other reddit scandals and issues - along with incredible Reddit-inspired events like the Wallstreetbets gamestop stock saga. With Reddit's own IPO on the horizon, let's look at where Reddit is now at.
Alexis Ohanian needed a plan, and he needed it fast. His senior year of college was approaching and he had no clue what he wanted to do with his life. Luckily his best friend, Steve Huffman, came to him with what sounded like a million dollar business idea. And then that business totally crashed and burned. So, how did two broke college kids with a failed business end up creating one of the most popular websites ever? And what really happened to Reddit’s forgotten founder who nobody talks about? Reddit’s history is filled with scandals, lies, money, and death. As Reddit has been involved in countless controversies - including its own users turning against the site. But it’s time for the truth. Welcome to the insane story of Reddit by MagnatesMedia - home of business documentaries, business mini movies and stories about big companies & entrepreneurs.

Hearing that the first ever subreddit made was the NSFW sub is the most Reddit thing I’ve ever heard.
it truly was a reddit moment
Makes all sense in the world.
Aaron Swartz was a remarkable individual who profoundly impacted the world in a relatively brief period, largely unnoticed by the general public. His contributions, though often unrecognized, have left a lasting legacy in the digital realm
More people need to hear his story

Pretty sad when people type out words in full, do a complete sentence that's well structured is looked at as not being from a person. Some people are still intelligent folks

My huge respect to Aaron Schwartz. So truly sad death. The guy was a huge deal to fight for internet freedom. Hope one day his visions will come true.
You should watch The Internets own Boy. You can find it here.
People give him too much credit for reddit. He was literally not involved in reddit, he created no code for reddit, nor did he do any marketing or otherwise for reddit. He was part of a project that was merged into another project, then left shortly after. How do I know this? I was there at the very beginning of reddit, a fan of ycombinator.

Wow, this video on Reddit's history really opened my eyes to how intricate and eventful its journey has been. It's particularly poignant when you mentioned Aaron Swartz, whose contributions and tragic story are such a significant part of internet history. His legacy in shaping the early internet and advocating for open access to information is both inspiring and heartrending. Videos like yours are essential in reminding us of the human stories behind these massive tech platforms. Thanks for sharing this well-researched piece and for honoring figures like Swartz who have left an indelible mark. Looking forward to more content like this!

The huge influx of users to Reddit happened after Digg changed the design of their site which was largely thought of as impossible to navigate.
To be able to put the time and effort you and your team put into these videos is amazing. The stuff you make is better than what you’d find on Netflix. Amazing work!
90% of stuff on KZhead is better than what you find on Netflix, dude.
@@Admiral_Bongotrue, still a compliment tho
Been subscribed for quite sometime now, can definitely say your content quality is improving significantly with every video. Keep up the good work!
I love how there's so much support in the Reddit communities. I had to hang some sun sails in a large equestrian area because the area is used for "equestrian therapy" for a teen rehabilitation program. I was able to find a sub-Reddit community that helped give me some great ideas. And being able to interact with fellow geeks about the MCU, NFL, soccer, etc is awesome.
Ahh, you mean r/equestriansunsailhangers
I can confirm from my experience. The r/foreskin_restoration sub has been amazingly supportive and helpful for new members. I also appreciate the fact that Reddit allows users to cite evidence, unlike KZhead which is so choked by algorithms for the comment section that I have pretty much decided to stop wasting my time here and focus exclusively on contributing to Reddit. Without being able to easily cite evidence, discussions and debates here seem almost completely limited to giving opinions. My only complaint with Reddit is that some subs are run by arbitrary mods who want to stop contributions from those who disagree with them by permanently banning them.
I tried Reddit on 3 occasions and was met with nothing but toxic elitist assholes who clearly spend their entire lives on that website and desperately want to gate keep their nasty little community, whilst also complaining that their "community" is dying. Just as an anecdote I went on r/Magic and watched a few magic tricks. The first one I commented something along the lines of "Hey, that was good, but your sleight of hand needs some work as it's really clear when you're palming the card" the admin banned me immediately and sent me a message calling me a malignant narcissist 😂
@@harrydavey9884there are definitely people like that, but from my experience there’s more good than bad. You just gotta learn how to navigate around it.
bro who is your editor? do you do all of it yourself? every time I watch one of your vids im blown away by how much work is put into the visuals
Someone edit it for him
@@Robin-ps9wqthen you asked if he did all of it himself 😐 he answered your question
Most KZheadrs pay a video editor who creates these videos and visuals. Also they pay someone to record on cameras when they make live videos
You have to oat someone to do it. So much content
Bro the Consistency with these very high effort required videos is really commendable!!
Definitely my favorite business investigative journalism KZheadr
You make such amazing videos, about interesting topics, with HIGH quality productions! Love your videos
Absolutely love the production quality!! You put the utmost level of effort into each and every one of your videos and its clear too see!! Easily my favorite channel on yt rn!! Keep it up
" lively conversations and debates" is possibly the single kindest way I've ever heard anyone describe the comment section of ANYTHING, let alone reddit.
Can we just stop and also say thank you to John. For these amazing, interesting and high-quality videos.

@@jamdungvybz i know. you knew what i was talking about though. ;) (inserts eddie murphy thinking meme again)
Same with Barnaby Jack, one of the most brilliant hackers of his era. Dude could "jackpot" ATMs and take all the cash, and figured out how to remotely hack certain models of pacemaker and insulin pump to cause them to malfunction and potentially *kill* the user. He never used this knowledge for evil though, and instead was a computer security expert. He was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in 2013.
watching this I'm amazed that it used to be a platform to speak freely on. Whenever I go on reddit it seems like every sub has rules upon rules and you have to be careful not to post something you're not allowed to post (i.e. if someone has posted it before, even ten years ago, don't you dare ask again). Which made me never want to join reddit as an active user. I go there if I have nowhere else to go to get answers but I usually won't get my answer there either lol
I joined reddit in its haydays.. early 2010s.. It used to be a place where actual information was available. It still does.. Albeit the meme, and political stuff has slowly overpowered the value aspect of it. Now you gotta really search deep to find a sub thats truly useful. I can imagine it to be pretty overwhelming for new users now.
Reddit is just like any other forum on the Internet, even more so when it comes to its mods and dwellers of any given sub. If you are in need of answers or information, don't post a question. Post a statement with a wrong/made-up answer and watch the nerds fall over themselves, racing to correct you, spilling out all the information you'll ever need in the process. They're all bickering smart-asses who love to talk down to others as the only thing they have ever achieved in their sorry lives. Use that to your advantage. But remember, with great power comes great responsibility.
when magnet media uploads a video i dont even care what the video is about, i can just watch it for the editing like the amount of effort they put to make these type of quality videos is just really great and i think even netflix should learn from this guy on how to make good documentaries

yesss! thank you. been waiting for this
Very glad that Aaron swatz got the recognition that he needs with your 1.24m subscribers!
recognition for what though? If anyone actually does real research, they will see Aaron wasn't part of reddit. He was working on his own thing and his project was merged into another. He had no interest in that other project (reddit) and quit shortly after. People are treating him like some martyr when he didn't just have nothing to do with reddit, he hated reddit because it meant the end of his own project.

In all fairness, Aaron is hardly forgotten as one of Reddit's founders. He is often left out of Reddit covers so I am really happy that you included him. What a remarkable human being. Thank you for a very good and interesting cover.
Great video! Pretty entertaining
It was a douche move of them to removing any mention of Aaron being a co-founder. He played just as much of a role in making Reddit a known platform.
Really good video! Thanks for making a wonderful documentary!
I really love your videos bud❤❤❤❤🎉
I love magnates my go to...everytime I want to give up on business
It's interesting to hear about Reddit's history With the API changes I stopped using reddit as much, the mobile app is so terrible that I'd rather use my mobile browser to browse reddit, and even that's a little annoying I get why they did it, but both sides handled things poorly
Reddit is slowly dying.
Not for those of us who miss IRL
