In 2017, the Rohingya people in Myanmar faced a genocide brought on by Buddhist extremists and the military. But something else was fueling the violence, inciting people, and spreading hatred - Facebook and their algorithm was helping tear the country apart.
Over 700,000 Rohingya people fled violence perpetrated by the military in their home country of Myanmar in 2017, seeking safety in neighboring Bangladesh. The majority of them continue to live, years later, in Kutupalong Refugee Camp. Since the beginning of this crisis, UNICEF has been working with the Bangladesh government and other partners to deliver relief to children and families living in the refugee camps and settlements and in neighboring host communities. Help UNICEF continue to support Rohingya refugee children and families. Your donation can make a difference.

And I've asked the embassy a couple of different times too, because the Chief Consular Officer has changed three or four times in as many years, so each departing chief has learned less and less from their predecessor, and has had less and less of an opportunity to understand everything going on in the country, and therefore been less and less equipped to effectively train their successor. Tiff if normally a position that is held for many years so that they really understand the country and it's laws, procedures, and even language and culture. But I suppose given the circumstances the i position has become a bit of a nightmare to hold that position - it's also responsible for conducting final interviews for Myanmar people seeking visas to the US, which is just about half the country right now.

  • As a Burmese, it's hard to imagine how we lived before 2010s. Politics was always like "big brother is watching". We hardly ever talked about it, and those who did were imprisoned or disappeared. Cell phones were like a vanity for the rich to show off. Internet was unheard of. Then came the democracy (kind of), and every aspect of our lives got better for like 10 years just before the 2021 coup. Now, full-blown civil war is brewing and it feels like our lives are regressing. It sucks to be born in this country.

    • I'm surprised at Johnny's ability to explain Rohingya genocide accurately. For those who wonder, the only reason military did this is it needed support from the people especially from Buddhists because at that time, people started experiencing democracy, using internet and saying how corrupt, greedy and cruel the military junta is. And military achieved its goal, but elected govt closed its eyes to the atrocities because the amount of misinformation and people's hatred to Rohingya was too strong at that time. Junta have erased Rohingya from the list of Myanmar ethnic group since 1980 so almost everyone here hadn't heard of Rohingya until 2017. All we knew at the time is they were a few thousands of Bengali people from Bangladesh who was trying to invade Myanmar. Facebook absented to stop hatred and misinformation, and still fail to perform. May be I am in denial, but I wouldn't entirely lay all the the blame on Facebook. it's the sum of paranoia, lack of ability to find information, poverty and negligence of the people. It's a slap in the face to Myanmar and her people and I am very ashamed of it. Now we are trying to eliminate military and start winning.

Particularly, the Rohingya muslims are not allowed to travel from one state to another. The government completely blocked their future, which is becoming dark day by day for them. While the international organizations have failed to give the rights to them. The saddest part is that most of Buddhist civilian supported government during the genocide upon Rohingya muslims, from which we can learn that many Buddhist of the country are narrow minded and it seems hard to see development of the country. In 2023, not only muslims suffering for survival but also Buddhist civilian, i hope they finally have seen the hidden extremists brutal face of the military junta. Yes, Myanmar military is wrong, but don't try to whitewash and absolve the common muslim population of Rakine as if they were saints. The Muslim population have a problem called Islam, which activily discourage them to assimilate or co-exist with other religious people who are non-Muslim. See the daily issues cropping up in Europe i. e. France, Sweden etc. Where Islamic radicals are committing 'Jihad' on daily basis and so called common Muslims support or sympathise with extremist element in them even if they don't actively parcipate in extremist activity. Why Poland never report Of Islamic extremism attack because they don't take Muslim refugee, Simple. The problem with Liberal mind like ke you is you all take a idealistic position and start preaching. World is not ideal and pragmatic argument should be made, unless you talk about the issues within the Muslim society and Islam in general, you are not addressing the crux of issue. Liberals self-censor themselves thinking that if they talk about issues with Islam or Muslim society then they will be labeled Islamophobe. So much talk about free speech but all you Liberals do is provide sympathies, not the actual solution to the problem.

  • I sincerely appreciate your invaluable contribution of information. Burmanization has left a lasting impact in Myanmar, where a significant portion of the population remains influenced by the military dictatorship, even in the wake of the 2021 military coup. It's encouraging to see that minority communities, such as the Rohingya and ourselves (ethnic minority groups), are standing resilient in our quest to safeguard our identities and resist military oppression. Recognizing the extent to which we've been subjected to decades of military indoctrination, we're taking a strong stance to break free from these chains and strive for a more inclusive and democratic Myanmar. but it's hard to achieve democratic Myanmar unless everyone in Myanmar know the truth.

• @@ErikBerg666 Hmm.. I don't know about the Rakine Muslim or why you stated that, like kind of a sect yeah? But lemme break it down for you about "The Islam phobic" thing is. The problem lies within Islam is pure ignorance. The mentioning of Muslim is also pure ignorance. The mentioning of Jihad is also pure ignorance. The mention of "only" Myanmar military or such is also ignorance. The mentioning of other countries and justified the Islam and Muslim is pure ignorance. You can addressed them as terriost if they're not "within" the terms of Islamic Jihad/the Rule of Jihad. Putting this aside in this case, which I needed to learn more about Rakine Muslim and the mentioning of killing innocent people. I can claim you're pretty ignorance of Islam religion and Muslims people. My breaking down point is simple. You can't justified the terrorist with another terrorism. For example. ISIS etc etc with majority of Islam. Otherwise 969 movement which emerge from the Buddhism can be considered the buddhist religion is terrorist. You can't claim something they're bad when you don't know them. In my Case Islam and Muslim. In your case, Social Media. If you want to compare the terriosm you should know where it all started, which completely going to break down your argument. But terrorism is terrorism. All in all they're bad no matter where it started or how. And I think you're being influenced by the western media/social media. And you think you can talk about how they called you "Islam phobic" if you talk about how Islam is this or that, or free speech is concern, there's no perspective of Muslims free speech otherwise all the western propaganda would be as clear as days. Don't be an ignorance/typical woke person. Don't be an arrogant/hated person. Learn more about Jihad if you want to talk about this particular subject. Your right is my left when we're facing each other Only by coming together the differences, you can see the right from both angle as well as left. Just a little piece of advice.

However, social media filters out content that doesn't align with our preferences, trapping people in information bubbles. Hatred grows between people of different faiths / political beliefs / race. This coupled with the lack of moderation, creates a pattern that repeats over and over in both developed and developing countries. It is certainly one of the main reason for the proliferation of extremism and populism in the 21st century.

In 2014, India elected a far-right anti-Muslim leader called Narendra Modi who had mastered the art of social media. In mid-July 2016, Brexit happened. In Nov 2016, Donald Trump, against all odds, became the US president. It was only because of Covid that Trump lost in 2020. Ironically, it seems like products of democratic, capitalistic societies i.e. Facebook, Twitter et al, will one day bring an end to democracy & capitalism.

The necessity to recognize and denounce extremists within every society and religion cannot be stressed enough. As a Muslim, my focus had primarily been on extremism just by the burmese military. However, today, I've gained awareness about the presence of hate speech, extremism, terrorism, and Islamophobia among Buddhists. It's disheartening to witness government involvement consistently resulting in negative outcomes. Perhaps the most startling revelation was the lack of international coverage or outcry. It highlights the disparity in global attention and protests concerning issues in Southeast Asia, particularly those affecting Muslims.

It has a lot of the same jargon (karma, dharma, reincarnation, etc) but a different spin on things, similar to how we in the west tend to categorize Buddhism And Hinduism together but as distinct concepts that are related. Many Hindus see the Buddha as a reincarnation of some god or another….and Jains are notable for how their monks wear face masks and carry brooms to sweep the ground in front of them to prevent themselves from harming even the smallest insect.
