It's a matter of trust i believe, mendy was thinking to challenge the ball and it's risky then he heard silva saying to stay back and he trust him that he can hold the player to give enough time for other defenders and that works.

It was more likely that he was telling him to come, not stay back. Thiago Silva has no speed, he wouldn't have backed himself in a foot race there. Also you can see him wave his arm backwards after the first time he holds his arm out. He also just states at Mendy afterwards

Good first performance, especially from our defensive line - defending against set pieces went really smoothly compared to our history. Also a big fan of Tarkowski, he seems like a really solid addition.

Same old story!!! Harvetz was on the pitch for far too long. Had zero effect on the game + Mount. Chilwell looked rusty, James had off day, Thiago Silva saved us a lot with his timely interceptions. Koulibaly played well and Kante helped us a lot. T T would need to vary his tactics and also make room for creative players such as Hakim Ziyech and Pulisic. We lacked creativity and it's sad seeing creative players being played out of position. We were lucky to have gotten all 3points.
