This is the life of the last Kyrgyz nomads of the Afghan Pamir, a people imprisoned between three borders. They have experienced famine, exile, war and persecution. The only place where they have found security and peace is the hidden depths of Central Asia.
Despite the hardships and extremely inhospitable terrain, these people have managed to survive and maintain their traditional way of life against all odds.

  • I was in the Pamir (USSR/Tadzhikistan) in 1989. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever traveled. I loved seeing the results of so many human migrations through the land - Persians, Mongols, Greeks, Scythians... and basically anyone who fought with or against Alexander the Great. Amazing to see olive-skinned kids with jet black hair and blue eyes! Wonderful people, beautiful land.

Governments do very little for these people whom they have little control over. In centuries gone by, no borders existed for them, and they thrived.
