To anyone wondering about the bathroom clip, Daily Dose got it mixed up. The gates are only down like that for 4 minutes in-between class because there was a vandalism problem at that school. Students were allowed to use the bathroom during class. I still don't understand how putting a gate down during passing periods fixes that problem but I was curious and looked into it a bit more and found that out. It's still an insanely stupid idea.

It's just another great way for schools to waste tax payers money. Yet they still claim they need more. I worked as a Clerk in charge of placing orders given to me using tax payers money for the school district in my area. The shit these districts request and approve of are outrageous. It's like they buy things BECAUSE they have a surplus of money, then petition for higher taxing so they get more money to waste.
My school didn't even haf toilett paper.
As a student who never cared until they reached college, I can confidently say that providing freedom to people is what inspires education. When you let people have some freedom and responsibility, they tend to want to keep earning more.
That bathroom door shutter is a great example of treating your children like they aren't human beings. As a teacher I would applaud any student that rebelled.
Jacob Geller has a documentary on this exact scenario (Treating students as inmates), I would have hoped that school systems could behave in a mature fashion, but they squander their budget and enforce arbitrary laws like children. To think I grew up in a system just as that, and have surpassed them developmentally.
It's literally so weird. Like, there are no such restrictions at colleges (as far as I know) and you can leave whenever without even asking, so why the hell would it be required to LOCK bathrooms in a goddamn school? I get they want kids to watch the classes but that's uncalled for

I remember once in high school I asked my teacher if I may go to the bathroom and she said no Then I asked her "what am I supposed to do then? Do it here?" and just got up and went out to the bathroom I will say that she isn't a bad teacher nor a bad person, but sometimes they can be so stubborn and close minded for no reason... Like, I'm a human being and I even asked politely I talked to her about it afterwards and we got it sort out but like, man... those gates are brutal, I would literally piss in those teachers' room or prinicipal's office if I had to, just to get the point clear

I've heard about this happening, and usually there will be some bathrooms that are unlocked. the smaller number of bathrooms are easier to monitor. the point is to reduce the amount space that kids can be in unobserved. it's a clumsy solution to drug and violence problems, since the bathrooms during class periods are disproportionately the place and time that stuff tends to occur.
That bathroom really struck a nerve with me. I remember a kid took a piss in the corner of the classroom cause the very smart teacher wouldn't let them go. Whoever greenlit such a crime against children should be locked up.

The bathroom one: they are not only violating human rights, but they are also violating any disabilities act their country has. There are several medical conditions (Crohn's Disease, pelvic floor disorder, nerve damage) that require ready access to a washroom. This needs to be sent to the news, to the local government, and they need to sue that school. Unacceptable.
Not to mention I guarantee they "close" them after four minutes are up to punish the students, which would be a hilarious violation of fire codes. But this most likely happened in a red state where federal laws are mere guidelines due to lack of judges who will actually prosecute.

Reminds me of the time my grade school back in early 2000s started prohibiting students from going to the bathroom during class.. They did not take into account that there were a couple students suffering from a bladder infection at the time, causing a couple accidents during study time. They rescinded that new "policy" after a month of being threatened by pissed off parents.

Locking bathrooms is a bad idea. I remember one time in first grade my teacher was scary and she banned anyone from going to the restroom during class. One day this one girl who sat near me pissed all over herself at her desk and everyone turned and looked at her horrified, no one was laughing. The teacher started yelling "WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME YOU NEEDED TO GO?!" and that girl started tearing up and said "But you told us we can't go..."

A teacher scolded me for going to the bathroom once. My parents had to talk to the entire administration because I stopped going at school and ended up getting severe constipation which resulted in multiple ER visits. After that, I had a free hall pass to go whenever I needed to. I remember missing an entire musical during a field trip because I was on the toilet in pain. It's not fun on my side. The gates on those doors makes me so sad.
It really sucks that you had to end up in the ER for them to do something about it. Something like that could have caused permanent damage that you'd have to live with for the rest of your life. That can lead to an impacted colon which can be very serious.
That's the first time i see a school with that auto-gates at toilet/WC in our country, they are free to go to toilets, but just for once in every class.. so when for example math class alredy end, n continue with history or other class, you can go toilet again..

Teachers scolding kids for going to the bathroom is such a stupid action. I remember when I was back in 1st grade, I saw teachers scolding kids and not allowing them to go to the bathroom. This made me scared to ask them and ended up accidentally peeing on my chair. And I ended up developing a UTI.
When I was in highschool there was a teacher that tried to not let students use the restroom in their class. Then one day someone said they had to go and was told no so he went ahead and pissed in the trash can in the corner of the room. That teacher got rid of that policy fairly quickly after that

I had a teacher in kindergarten prevent me from going to the bathroom, it was in a French emersion school. Apparently, the teacher wanted me to ask in French, but I had no idea how to as I was still learning. I made a huge puddle on the classroom floor, and she tried to make me mop it up. I refused to the point she called in my mother. Like, idk what she expected? My mother rung her out over that bs. Having locks on bathroom doors is just bonkers to me. I don't understand how people think kids can hold it in, it just isn't good at all!
The younger generation got the short stick. Terrible parents, terrible society, bullying, being exposed to adult things at a young age, TikTok, being raised on the internet, no room for imagination, being treated like inmates in their schools, etc. Even if these poor kids nowadays were allowed to be kids and have their own personalities without someone telling them they can't, they wouldn't know how to at this point.
The rate at which teachers abuse and torture students in ways like this (among other ways) leaves me weary of any person who proudly tells me they're a teacher.

I remember back in New Zealand a pupil wetting herself in class after being refused being able to leave the classroom to go to the toilet. It is a basic human right to have access to a toilet whenever it is needed. Some are on tablets or have a sickness where they cannot wait at all. It is disgusting to have this basic right denied
You don't even need to be sick to get hurt by this. Anyone can get a kidney or urinary tract infection by holding their urine too long, especially problematic for women.

That bathroom thing is so wild, in my school anyone was allowed to go to the bathroom without asking as long as they left quietly and only one person in class used the bathroom at a time. Nobody, not even the most disruptive kids abused the system.
I remember one guy just straight up answered a phone call from his mom in the middle of the class and just walked out 😂 But yeah, we were allowed too of course. But the trachers were not happy, saying thay they would be responsible if we got hurt and that we had time during the break. But they were not allowed to forbid it. Only one teacher allowed to just quetly leave the class

Honestly if the kids do decide to abuse it it's on them. You can't control their actions at all times, especially not without consequences for the good children. All you can do is tell the kids what to do, why they should do it, and punish them when possible to reinforce the point. If they still try to abuse it, well, they'll face the consequences later on. Such is life. Just do your best to get the point across and hope that's enough. No need to be excessive because even if you are they will still find ways to abuse it and it might even make it worse.
I have the same thing. People can get up and leave, and generally speaking one kid is let out at a time. That's sort of an unspoken rule though, and I'm sure if people left while another was in the bathroom, it'd be fine
For my last two years at high school, the restrooms were kept locked at all times, and anyone wanting to use them (or be in the hallway at all during class) had to be escorted by an administrator. Admin never started a reason.

The bathroom locking during class time is really sad and cruel. Between girls who have certain emergency situations and guys like me who eat way too many jalapeños on a daily bases, we wouldn’t stand a chance.
Let's not forget all disabled kids and kids taking medication, which in today's society are growing in numbers. Imagine being disabled, being given meds that make you need to pee, and getting punished for being disabled

As a significantly deaf chap, my friends mouth to me all the time, and it’s hilarious. They know I’m not sensitive about it and my hearing loss is more a source of humour than a burden (thanks to my hearing aids). However, I’m not sure I like the idea of doing it to a senior who is a complete stranger. It seems cruel, especially to someone to whom loss of hearing is an unavoidable reminder of their deteriorating lives.

Agreed. Messing around this way with people you know is one thing. Being elderly, she is likely dealing with hearing loss, which can be an emotional journey for a lot of people, especially if they haven't yet learned how to make adjustments to accommodate for not relying on hearing as much.

The problem I see with the bathroom lock is bullies will love it. They'll beat someone up or something so they can't move for minutes and either stay in there to harass them further, swirlies come to mind, or just lock 'em in and go to class. Since the door closes, no-one knows what is going on in there.

That bathroom door that seals shut when class is going on is so incredibly anti-human, I can assure you a lot of complains were made by parents alone. Imagine not being able to use the bathroom during that 4-minute period because it was overly crowded and you have to wait another period of time.

I'm so grateful for that my k-8 schooling was in the 90's. I could go to the bathroom freely. Entering the school was so easy and carefree, it didn't operate like a prison. Life was great in the 90's.

I had a principal at my school who ACTUALLY CARED about the INDIVIDUAL students wellbeing. Like this man went out of his way to buy me, a random kid a soccer ball. Sadly he left that school (though from what I've heard he's gotten pretty high up the system in the school board) and we were left with the average principal Who does the bare minimum work.
Yea compared to now hands down 10x better however 20 yr old in the 90's felt the exact same way about the late 70-early 80's.

The gates on the bathroom seem like a similar but in a way opposite problem of when public bathroom stalls don't have doors at all. I remember traveling as a kid and stopping with my parents at a rest area where none of the stalls had doors. My dad then decided to poop in the woods adjacent to the bathroom building instead, which I found extremely embarrassing. As he explained it to me at the time, "If they don't want people to poop in the woods then they should have thought of that before they decided to remove the doors. People obviously still need to poop and it's clearly not an option to poop in a stall without a door!"

That thing with the bathrooms has got to be a crime. There's no way that can be legal. What if someone has a bathroom emergency in the middle of class? Lord knows if I ever had one, but the bathroom was locked up, and I ended up having an accident as a result, you'd be certain I'd have my parents sue the school for emotional distress. Plus the cost of new clothes.

That CO2 clip is exactly why we need reforestation in closer proximity to urban environments. I honestly find the lack of trees in my area over that passed 30 years crazy disturbing. I remember being a kid and having so much shade around...now you're lucky if you have a few per block. The house I grew up in particular had large trees out front and fruit trees in our backyard. When my dad passed and we sold the house. The realtors or sellers came in to remodel and cut every tree down. Ironically it went up in value.

Yikes. My dad was a landscape designer (now arborist), who transformed our twin house with foliage and trees. I call it "The Meadow" and that's his goal. We worked on the house for years and it's beautiful. My mom and dad planned to sell the house awhile ago, but now they're passing it down to me and my older brother. There's no way I'm letting some realtor ruin my dad's hard work.
