  • To become a pilot in Ethiopia you have to be top draw. Its like working for NASA. Your academic and physical is tested to the limit. The training is extensive and only the best make it. Ethiopians are proud of their national flag carrier and the pilots take a huge responsibility, the nations pride in their hand. Ethiopian also trains pilots from all over Africa at their training base as the training facilities don't exist anywhere else in Africa. Female pilots are common but a lot of the mechanics, aviation staff etc are also women. Keep going strong my beloved ETA.

  • Ethiopian Airlines made history in 2015 when it operated the first all-female crewed flight on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The flight, which took off from Addis Ababa and landed in Bangkok, was piloted by Captain Amsale Gualu and First Officer Selam Tesfaye. The cockpit crew was supported by an all-female cabin, technical and ground staff. The flight was part of Ethiopian Airlines' vision to empower women and inspire girls to pursue careers in aviation. don't surprise!

    • I disagree with you @ArithemB ,how can you say if something happen they will need a man critical thinking whereas a woman of 81 years old was able to controll a plane under a stressful condition of her husband strucked by his health condition while controlling the flight and even 30yrs back since controll a flight. This is a show of the brevity of one's heart in taking responsibility of hard brain fulfillment works like this, this are thoroughly trained and they are strong enough to can take their own decisions from how they were training❤❤❤trust them.   • I’m a woman with a deep love of flying and aviation, but ended up with a different career entirely. I am in awe of the skill, training, and teamwork of these women. They stand in the shoulders of the women who broke the ranks by being even more competent than their male peers. I would feel relieved to hear their announcements in the cabin. Brava!

    • Because it's more profitable and flexible to schedule 3 flights a day to a specific medium haul destination with, let's say a 737 than one flight a day with a big jet that hasn't been designed for that, although the 787-800 might be an exception. You need to sell at least over 80% of seat capacity to be profitable on such routes. Plus add competition with other carriers.

    • Ethiopian is really an amazing airline if you think of it... they operate 70 widebodies with more on order.... no airline in Africa comes close and for most European countries thats a big number as well.

  • Looks may be very deceiving, indeed. Inside the fuselage lie some of the most sophisticated electrical, electronics, mechanical, pneumatics, hydraulics, communicational and navigational technological marvels. That is to say, let's not forget the unsung heroes in the hangars and elsewhere, whose hours, days and sometimes weeks and months of hard and sweaty back-breaking work made the big bird airworthy. Nonetheless, am very proud of you ladies! Ethiopian Airlines, I know from firsthand experience, is super picky. In an overly patriarchal and conservative society like that of Ethiopia, that you ladies made it to where you are says a lot about you, and the management at Ethiopian Airlines. God bless Ethiopia and its people!
