    • Thanks for your common sense. If they didn’t sign Cousins, people would have been ecstatic about this pick. But you could have finally grabbed a much needed edge rusher, and you make a luxury pick instead. What a terrible front office

    • People should be mad at the pick. Penix was exposed numerous times in his own conference. He wasn't good enough to win at Indiana; Washington just happened to have a more talented team than the rest of its conference. When Penix had to play an NFL caliber defense in the national championship game, he proved that he couldn't do it.

  • It's not a mistake it just doesn't make sense. Why pay Cousins and enter "win now" mode, to use a top 10 pick on a player you don't intend to play. It might turn out great as a long term move, but it doesn't help you in the short term.

      @peterkaufman5624@peterkaufman562413 күн бұрын
    • @blacklac100 the problem is that they aren't good enough to be on the 2 timelines plan. They're barely good enough to be on one timeline. You don't get Cousins unless you want to win now which is fine, but then they hindered their ability to do that by not improving the team right now. It's mixed messaging if nothing else

The biggest thing about this idiocy is that if they are truly are in "win now" mode, then they would've gone and got pieces for spots they need more. Picking Penix shows that they're not and that they wasted $180 million on someone they didn't need. They could've gotten another veteran QB for much less.

He isn't a raw QB, he played in a pro style offence and he's without a doubt the best pocket passer in this draft. He's not gonna go through crazy development by sitting behind a QB (he ain't Jordan Love, Patrick Mahomes, Trey Lance etc..) he's already pretty refined and he'll get better by playing games.

If Cousins returns to previous form, the Falcons won’t have to rush Penix’s development. On the other hand, if Cousins fails to recover as planned, the Falcons suddenly have an insurance policy. Moreover, the way these deals are now, with the constant increase of the salary cap, the guaranteed money is going to get higher. That is what matters on the deal, not the years.

So now all their focus can be on upgrading defense & resigning offensive talent. 2. Look at QBs for other NFC South teams, Bryce for Panthers? Baker for Bucs? Carr for Saints? 3. Falcons offense is gonna be top 10 with Kirk then Penix, so if Morris can get the D to be top 15, they will win 10+ games every year. 4. With Penix possibly starting after 3 seasons, he won't demand max contract $$$. He will probably get $45 mil/ season contract after rookie deal rather than $60 mil. Might go with a Cousins type contract, 4 yr/ $180 mil/ fully guaranteed.

    • @@jesusm2159 false the Falcons have a weaker division and out JJ. Better skill players. Your defense is better as well. Plus the market for Penix is better suited for Atlanta than Minnesota let's be real.

    • @jesusm2159 How? JJ has to start immediately in a division with a Super Bowl contender, a Super Bowl dark horse, and a playoff team. The Vikings are the worst team in the NFC North right now whereas the Falcons are the best in the NFC South. Plus, I would argue any situation where a rookie gets to sit behind a very good veteran is better than one where they have to start immediately.

  • Bad decision on Atlanta. You grab a player who may not see the field until Cousins contract runs out. You pay Cousins over 100 mill, and you had a chance to get Dallas Turner . Instead, it was an early second round pick in Pennix . Wow!!! Incredible!!!

  • Paying the top free agent QB a long massive contract AND then drafting a QB at #8 basically defeats the purpose/benefits of BOTH MOVES!!!! The GM should be fired even before the 2nd day of the draft starts.

    @chazzhammer425@chazzhammer42513 күн бұрын
  • As a Falcons fan, Mr. Smith, allow me to explain it to you. 1) If Kirk Cousins is worth the guaranteed contract, if Cousins' medicals were clear, then drafting Penix Jr. is wasting a pick. 2) If you are concerned with Cousins' injury or post-season production to the point you need to draft Penix Jr., then signing Cousins was a waste of $100 million dollars. I'm with you on not caring if he was consulted. I don't give a wet moose-fart about Kirk Cousins' feelings. He's an employee. An employee who is over-compensated for his services.

  • Stephen A must be drunk & dumb! The point is that spending $180 million dollars on a QB and then spending the 8th pick on another one is either a waste of money or a waste of a draft pick.

  • I’m not saying that Kirk is a long term thing. I’m not saying that Penix is a bad QB. The fans are saying why pay a “bridge” type QB $100+ million contract when you knew you wanted Penix or a QB for the future. We could’ve allocated the money we gave Kirk to other areas on the team.

    • And i really do hate the Mahomes/Alex Smith comparison when Alex Smith was paid half the amount Cousins got and Mahomes was 2 years younger than Penix and was truly meant to sit a year.

      @ninja0329@ninja032913 күн бұрын
  • Stephen doesn’t understand the dynamics. They paid a fortune to bring in cousins so they can start winning games now. Then they didn’t do anything to make their team better for the first round. They could’ve got a starter who helps them win. why bother bringing in cousins if this is what you’re going to do afterwards? It makes zero sense, not surprising from the Cleveland Browns of the south.

  • Guaranteed a guy $100M this off-season & then use a top 10 pick on the same position. Let him sit 4 years & learn? Now you'll have a 28 year-old who is at the end of his rookie deal. This move has nothing to do feeling sorry for Cousins, all about a completely ignorant move.

  • This is one of the rare times where I agree with Stephen A 100% about my guy Penix. Penix is going to prove his value in due time. The man is a winner. It's that simple. He will win a lot of games for Atlanta when he gets his shot and a lot of Atlanta fans who are booing now will be thankful then.

    • @johnwaldo6758 he has the intangibles and he has the work ethic. He's a perfectionist and he's plain and simple just a winner. A lot of people will disagree with this next statement, but I don't care. Michael Penix was the best QB in this class and he will prove that when his number gets called. You guys got a future HoFer. Take care of my guy. We'll miss him in Washington. But he went to a team that will give him an opportunity to shine sooner than later. I don't see Cousins lasting 2 full years. I think he'll get injured unfortunately for him. But it won't be unfortunate for Atlanta because Penix will work every day and he'll be prepared to drop dimes to Pitts and that receiving core and when that happens then the best version of Bijon will come out. You guys are set for the next dozen years at least. Watching Penix for the last 2 years was absolutely amazing. The young man is built to succeed, and he doesn't know anything about failure. That's a foreign word to him. He's a winner and IMO he is the true steal of the draft.
