  • ‘Why should I return to fight?’ Ukrainian men living abroad say. “People won’t return. The longer the war goes on, the more laws like this are passed, the more people hate Ukraine and the government. Why should I return to fight? For what? Why didn’t the government care about labour migrants like me before the war?” “Every day we have less and less territory and fewer and fewer people. Some have been killed, others swam the Tisza River just to escape.” The Tisza, a tributary of the Danube, marks a 10-mile stretch of Ukraine’s border with Hungary. Sgt Ruzhenko, who lost an eye in the first year of the war but like many wounded is still deemed fit for service and cannot demobilise, admits current recruitment is dire. While his ideal soldier would be 27- to 30-years-old, the average candidate is around 45 or 50, from the social and economic margins of society, and often in poor health. “Lots of people want to serve, they just don’t want to be assigned to a ‘meat brigade’,” he said, using soldier’s slang for units where “low level commanders and high-level commanders don’t give a f*** about their people.”

  • Here is an example of kinship that America use to have with its greatest ally back in the day. I think you will enjoy this quote from the Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Gorchakov writing to Lincoln in the Autumn of 1862 a year and a half into the war- "You know that the government of United States has few friends among the Powers. England rejoices over what is happening to you; she longs and prays for your overthrow. France is less actively hostile; her interests would be less affected by the result; but she is not unwilling to see it. She is not your friend. Your situation is getting worse and worse. The chances of preserving the Union are growing more desperate. Can nothing be done to stop this dreadful war? The hope of reunion is growing less and less, and I wish to impress upon your government that the separation, which I fear must come, will be considered by Russia as one of the greatest misfortunes. Russia alone, has stood by you from the first, and will continue to stand by you. We are very, very anxious that some means should be adopted-that any course should be pursued-which will prevent the division which now seems inevitable. One separation will be followed by another; you will break into fragments."

    @JPJ432@JPJ43215 күн бұрын
    • Here is another quote I think you will like but from Tsar Alexander II in an Interview after the war: "In the Autumn of 1862, the governments of France and Great Britain proposed to Russia, in a formal but not in an official way, the joint recognition by European powers of the independence of the Confederate States of America. My immediate answer was: "I will not cooperate in such action; and I will not acquiesce. On the contrary, I shall accept the recognition of the independence of the Confederate States by France and Great Britain as a casus belli for Russia. And in order that the governments of France and Great Britain may understand that this is no idle threat; I will send a Pacific fleet to San Francisco and an Atlantic fleet to New York."

There is also fun Newspaper clippings to look up online of San Francisco throwing a huge parade for the arrival of the Russians to show their thanks as they arrived at a pivotal time in the war in 1863 when the Union was at its weakest point and when the British and French where about to join the fray as France was already in multiple cities just south of the Southern Border and the British were constantly shipping in more troops and assembling their Armada in their Northern Confederacy ready to divert Union troops away from their Southern Confederacy. In the newspaper clippings you can see the relief on the locals faces knowing that they were not in this fight alone.

    • Much of the land in Ukraine has been brought by groups that “fund” those world leaders and they have plans for significant profit as the new owners of that land. Also, there is control over significant farmland (Ukraine has a lot of farmland that trades with a lot of the EU, and given that countries in the EU have been booting traditional farmland owners they desperately want control over those crops) and resources such as oil that they want in their hands. Then ofc there is the industrial military complex that makes staggering profits from war. Greedy eyes on Ukraine. They don’t really give a hoot if it’s depopulated, just as long as it stays under their control.

  • Something i find quite striking is the lack of first strike attempts on the borders where those military equipment passes into ukrainien territory. it should be a pretty high value target to hit a train moving APCs, MBTs or Artiklery Munitions from Poland to Ukraine - i just wonder whats causing russia to not attempt to strike those?

    @justacomment1657@justacomment165715 күн бұрын
    • I think the difficulty lies more the reconnasance aspect of it. The US is not gonna move all of its equipment on a single massive train on one track into Ukraine. It's gonna disperse them at different locations at different times, most likely at night. And then to lots of bases throughout the country. I don't think Russia has the means to massivley strike these rearmaments, unless they k ow the location of their depots.

  • Sometimes I wonder, although russian military has learned much since 2022, why they are not really using the strategy of "Schwerpunkte" with concentrated forces from many attacking directions to break through faster and encircle enemy forces. In the weekly report about this war it was for example said that Ukraine military lost some 8K soldiers in one week but only 10 to 20 prisoners have been listed. Why are russian forces using this "step by step" attritional strategy? It is attrition for their troops, too. What is the plan behind this? I can understand that ukrainian military with all the western equipment is no joke but it is often said that russian military would have created reserves in the 10k's. And after a big victory like in Avdiijka or in front of Tschassiv Yar they seem to not push on with full power with the aim to use the situations and make a swift move and encircle enemy troops. Have there been any closed cauldrons in this war? I couln't remeber any big one at least. Is it because ukrainian and russian people are brothers and Russia want to give them an opportunity to ask themselves if they fight for the right "side"? Could be, couldn't it? Or is it because russian military hasn't got the power yet to accomplish such larrger scale manoeuvers? This is an interesting question to me. I mean Putin clearly said that Russia's aims are to secure areas like the Donbass and the russian people there and to get rid of "fascists". So what is your opinion? Putin I think is a very intelligent and forward looking man. Perhaps he wants to be sure to hit the ones he wants to hit but not all ukrainian soldiers who maybe often had no choice. Perhaps he wants to leave the door open for negotiations and maybe even to get ukrainian people on the russian side mentally and don't act for example like "the West" did and does in the middle east. So that he wouldn't create people who are hostile against Russia for the next generations...

    @DerDude1977@DerDude197715 күн бұрын
    • I think it has more to do with a lack of strategy. I could be totally wrong, but it seems that russian forces are trying to push along the whole front in order to find a weak spot in the ukrainian defensiv line. Kinda like how water flows along the path of least tesistance. When there's a threat of encirclement, you can bet that Ukrainian is doing everything to teinforce the flanks to the point where it's easier (tactically and logistically) to just attack head on. But I agree that it would serve the russian troops well, if they started to form more coldrins. It would either force the Ukrainians into a retreat (so gain of land without minimal losses), or prevent them from regrouping behind another defensive line, essentially reducing their numbers without having to fight them head on. Russia seems to make good progress in small urban warfare. If they can advance via the towns and villages, preferably those with railway stations, while securing the roads along the way, then perhaps this gives them greater opportunites for advances.

    • You should read 'on war' as the mentality of the RF forces seems to be quite similar. The purpose of russian military is not to take land, that's a symptom. The way you win the war is by degrading your enemies ability to continue to resist ie by destroying their army. This is why they are not doing any rapid advances, and why they keep creating situations like bakamut where ukrane can be tricked into wasting huge masses of forces in a fight the russians have a tactical advantage in.
