The Palestinian reaction was to use Gaza as a rocket launch platform and as a staging post for a brutal raid against Israeli civilians. So peace had its chance, and the Palestinians failed to seize their chance to have a civilized future. And now the Israelis have realized being civilized, peaceful neighbors is beyond the ability of the Palestinian people.
