A spokesperson for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Israel is "moving ahead" with its planned invasion of Rafah. Rafah is a southern border town in Gaza and is home to around 1.4 million Palestinians, many of whom are refugees. The US and its allies fear that an assault on this town could result in a bloodbath and a possible expulsion of Gazans into Egypt's Sinai peninsula. Egyptian officials have warned Israel against attacking Rafah and even hinted at a possible suspension of the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries. Egypt did not make peace with Israel because they wanted to, they did because they were roundly defeated by Israel and the peace treaty was the only way to get back the land they lost to Israel in war.
