Three Combastion Zone Stove // Installation + Testing

Finally I installed my king size wood stove in place and I totally happy with result. The only thing I made wrong is too small air pipes in the first combastion zone. If you will ever build such a stove so install twice bigger pipes so you could give more air on the start of burning. Go to first test 08:16 if you don't want to watch the installation process.

  • Have to say fantastic stove turned out, the only thing I'd change is install bigger pipes in the first combustion zone to be able to give more air on the start of burning. So I will modify my 3D model and upload free plans soon. Hope you like this project as I do 👍 Go to 08:16 if you don't want to watch the installation process Thanks for watching!

    • I do the same, except right before I open the door I open the flute. this creates a vacuum that sucks the fumes out. I'm not sure if that trick will work with this, but I noticed there's no flute on the stove pipe... probably doesn't really need it tho, but it would save wood since it would keep some of the exhaust in the stove to overburn and it would make it about 25% more efficient.

The way those U-channels weld up to form giant cooling fins is a great. Their are a number of ideas I'm totally going to steal for my build.

  • To stop making the smoke go out the door, try making the door smaller? Can you add a "flap" on top that hangs down in the door opening, maybe on hinges, so it's not too much in the way when loading in wood, but still narrows the air-flow inwards? Maybe have some "catchment thingy" so the flap can be captured in an upper position (for loading) and then can be released (maybe from the outside?) when needed.

  • Thanks for sharing May I make some suggestions plastic buckets and ash dont mix ever, the base of the brick chimney requires a clean out door, replace the lovely spinning chimney shroud with an H pot the work you did at the top has restricted fume flow/chimney pull a very common mistake. To extract more heat might I suggest you move the stove two meters to the left join the stove outlet to the chimney inlet with a two meter oblong box the front panel of which should be removable or the top panel [for clean out purposes] a series of correctly size and placed baffles will allow the steel to absorb the heat and radiate to the workshop, this will also reduce creosote build up in the chimney which of course should not be a problem once you have the secondary air situation sorted but will still be of use to collect fine fly ash. you may find some form of air control in the door beneficial visa vie clean burn and smoke reversal. but as suggested by a previous comment cracking the door then slowly opening helps greatly.

  • Hi, great work you've done there. The problem you have is material related as flue goes where the heat is higher and iron will always be heater than bricks. Adding an elbow and 1m of pipe upwards the chimney should do. Another solution is to insulate the combustion chamber. That'll improve draft and efficiency while making it last less as metal will eventually start to flake. But is a good feeling IMO. Hope it helps! (Tried rocket stoves, gas tanks conversions and batchrockets before.)

    @mmctuner@mmctuner3 ай бұрын
  • Great work, well done. You're not getting a good draft when you first light the fire because drafting won't occur until there is enough heat in the chimney, this is the same for factory-made wood heaters. You have a *lot* of thermal mass in the heater and chimney so to avoid smoke when you light the fire, start with a small and hot fire with dry hardwood kindling. This will heat the system quickly and get the draft started at which point you can pile in additional wood. Also, the smoke that comes into the room once the fire has been burning for a while is probably coming from the creosote on the inside of the door and there's nothing much you can do about it other than opening the door slowly so the smoke gets caught in the draft and goes up the chimney rather than into the room. You could also open the vents for a few minutes before opening the door so the extra combustion burns the creosote off the inside of the door and door frame.

  • Two thoughts: have you considered adding a damper, air intake on the door to allow additional combustion air into the firebox? I have seen several YT videos where glass pot lids are adapted as firebox windows. Perhaps adding one in lieu of the two upper holes will allow a better view of the combustion chamber. Wishing you and your family a blessed week. Peace brother

    @loft306@loft3062 ай бұрын
  • On the first wood stove I built I ended up putting an air inlet in the door to help with lighting the fire. Next, the baffle needs to have a downward facing lip, say 25 mm deep, to cause turbulence on the edge and mix the smoke better for secondary combustion. There's a lot too it but if you like I can share a copy of the Building Wood stoves book, originally published by the Lauristan Hall Community (a collective based in Scotland), which has loads of really useful information based on their experience of building wood stoves over many years.

  • if you move the stove a meter to the left and install a damper in the flue pipe the stove will go from negative pressure to positive pressure in the firebox. This will make a noticeable difference in the heat output. Just remember to open the damper and then slowly open the door pausing with it cracked open a little for draft take out the smoke.

  • The diameter of the exhaust tube might be a bit too small for the volume of the burning chamber. that could be the reason you still get smoke from the door when opening it. You could also make the door opening a bit smaller by adding a (removable or variable) strip in the top portion of the door opening. Nice job !

    @frankh5142@frankh51423 ай бұрын
    • The chimney is plenty tall and should draft extremely well. Maybe the top tube is too small as you say. There could be offsets, ledges, loose bricks, bird's nests, etc restricting the chimney. When the chimney warms up, it will draw a lot better, so maybe the initial poor drafting will get better as it heats up.

  • Could the original chimney be clogged up with soot, bird's and wasp's nests, etc? If enlarging the holes in the afterburner compartment helped, maybe drill them larger. Try removing the small diameter pipe at the very top to see if the draft is better. I'm sure you have already thought about all those things, the stove is really a great design.

  • Your answer to smoke in the room when you open the door seems simple You have a brick chimney up to the top, I suspect no steel liner. This air flue drags air and slows down the gasses exhausting, Meaning the size of the flue is slightly smaller than needed, and especially will remain colder near the top, acting like a auto shut off, Meaning the stove you installed requires a wider chimney flue. Also having a 90 turn more than once in the flue, also slows down the flow of gasses escaping, You will also have to clean the chimney more often, especially when you will notice a little more smoke entering the room, If you probably had a metal chimney all the way up You may not encounter as much smoke, depending on the size of pipe, and any creosote build up will also slow down the exhausting gasses, Going straight up from the stove usually solves a lot of smoking, Did you know smoking is bad for your health !
