Around every corner, it feels like people are trying to scam you out of your money. But no one tries harder than audio companies. No I'm not talking about, Apple, Sony, Sennheiser or Samsung. I'm not even talking about hi-fi audio companies like Marantz, Bang and Olafson or Adam Audio. I'm talking about the shady companies that exist in the world of audiophile tweaks. The companies that use science-y sounding words to rip you off. So we got our audio aficionado friend Dankpods to come over and join us while we take a look at some of the craziest BS we've ever seen on this channel.

  • Be aware that some of the "quantum" stickers have thorium dioxide in the adhesive, so they may be mildly radioactive. As a precaution, wash your hands after handling them as ingesting alpha emitter material is not a good health thing. The ones I checked out that are sold to protect special people from their phone's 5G death beams were radioactive. That phat resistor in the power conditioner thing is a resistive dropper. So the case should get reassuringly warm in use. (It's the cheapest way to run the LED flasher from the mains.)

Good thing he set a limit! - Wade’s “kid in a sweet shop” joy for each new piece of utter crap, knowing that it is going to wind up Dan and Linus… - Adam’s sarcastic sale’s pitch for each product, and his glee when revealing the price. - Everyone’s willingness to call out this audiophile rubbish, and joy when taking it apart to prove that it does NOTHING!!!! Great episode, please can we have more of these collaborations 👏👏👏

    • Burn-in isn't absolutely hogwash. I make electronic test equipment for measuring photodiodes and they have to be burned in due to the extreme sensitivity of the measurements. I'm using a Keithley 237 Source-Measure Unit and applying a few hundred volts and watching the current. It'll drop from ~1's of µAs to sub nAs. No one has been able to explain exactly whats going on, but the supposition is that contaminants are getting migrated or its something to do with surface charge. It definitely helps to heat it up in an oven while you're doing it. I dont think any of this would ever be noticeable in audio equipment, but there is evidence of burn-in being real. I spent a lot of money on my headphones and when I first got them I was ready to send them back immediately, but I played metal at 150% comfortable listening levels for like 24 hours and it made an absolute difference. I figure its probably from the foam fatiguing to be a little more compliant or maybe even some "deburring" if you will, and I'm sure you wont.

Some of the best R 'mainframe twisted SCSI cables' & gray/red combo 'lamp wire' (whatever that stuff is where 1 lead is gray & the other copper = 'evens things out' = sounds BS until U hear it). Another is the best 'coax' is the thin flimsy 'trash' stuff = more 'transparent'. Less capacitance or something? iDunno = not an engineer, but lot of cables do sound different & more expensive doesn't mean better. Same goes with headphones 4 sure = several years iSpent trying out 'everything' & the best overall (currently) turned out 2 retail around $15 LOL

  • You got the Shrek man himself! Essentially, if your wire is shielded or balanced, you’re not going to have noticeable capacitance or inductance issues. If it’s a singular cable without shielding, it could be effected, which is a pretty cheap problem to fix with ground shielding. Cheap 2 cable stereo wire issues are negligible, because they’re amplified, and we’re not dealing with the gigahertz range of frequencies that love to be absorbed by everything.

  • The IC @12:21 is probably a timer or a counter to make the led blink. The rest is just a half rectifying bridge to power the timer/counter. Being a half bridge rectifier means the IC is only powered half the time and they probably use that as part of the count. It also allows them to save an insurmountable amount of money in two more diodes :|

Burn-in on audio is a myth though, speakers are not motors or batteries and will run pretty much the same whether their new or old or in different environments.

It occurs when an audiophile (hi-fi enthusiast, nothing wrong with that) achieves a level of sound quality that can not be significantly improved, but feels compelled to continue trying to do so at any cost. It's a form of addiction and can cause otherwise intelligent, rational individuals to be taken in by what others clearly see as nonsensical claims related to sham products.
